  • I got a handful of requests to check out Babymetal, a band I've long been familiar with. Thankfully in this situation I haven't heard their latest album so I figured I'd pull a song from there. I'm blown away with Divine Attack and it's right up there with Megitsune as one of my all time favorite songs by Babymetal.
Thanks for getting In The Pit! Have a song you think I would like? Leave a comment below and if I haven't heard it, I'll put it on the list.

Good "first" reaction and welcome to the BABYMETAL Foxhole.🦊Good choice of song and performance too - 'Divine Attack' was the first single released in advance of 'The Other One' album. It is also the first song where Su-metal has an official writing credit for the lyrics.
The BABYMETAL Begins, Black Night and Clear Night concerts where the BluRay was filmed were on 1st and 2nd April 2023 and that was where they played all 10 songs from the album, debuting the ones they hadn't already played in their BABYMETAL Returns concerts in January.
They toured right across the US last year co-headlining with Dethklok in 29 concerts, so they may well have been somewhere near you. They actually played nearly 100 concerts in 25 countries last year - their longest and hardest tour to date.
Su-metal is easily my own favourite vocalist and its not even close - there is a quality in her voice that makes me feel whatever emotion she is expressing despite my understanding no Japanese. The whole concept for BABYMETAL was formed and developed around her vocal talents and stage presence.
I don't think she is entirely unrecognised, but may be overlooked by those who are not so familiar with BABYMETAL. She did win at the Loudwire 6th Annual Music Awards - Rock Goddess of the Year 2016 (just one of the roughly 25 awards they have won).
Their stages in their Japanese arena concerts are always spectacular, but they don't tour with them. They have a completely different stage design for each different venue, so this particular stage was only used for these two shows at the PIA Arena in Yokohama. The concerts they had played at the Makuhari Messe in January had a completely different, but no less amazing, stage.
BABYMETAL is the girls, so for the BluRays the focus will nearly always be on them. With the stage designs the Kami Band, who support them in all their live shows, do tend to be apart from them. For example the girls will be on a moving platform heading out into the middle of the arena while the Kami Band remain on the main stage.
In the more modest venues and at the festivals they play as they tour the world you will see the Kami Band right up there behind the girls.
In this video you saw and heard the Kami Band of the West - American musicians Chris Kelly and CJ Masciantonio on guitars, Clint Tustin on bass and Anthony Barone on drums.
They first appeared in 2019 to support BABYMETAL on their lengthier foreign tours and have been the full time support for the whole of last year and this since these April concerts.
The Kami Band of the East (the best Japanese session musicians to be found) last played at the January 2023 concerts, but they had been supporting BABYMETAL in all live shows since March 2014 and before then they had played at festivals and the encores in some shows since October 2012.
I think BABYMETAL were mistaken in the west (especially in the US) as being a gimmick early on ... they were never that. They are just different and unique, something new that didn't fit the imaginary boxes and pigeonholes people seem to need to make sense of everything, doing things their own way, not following the same old format most other bands have followed for the last 50-60 years.
You could do reactions to all the songs from the album in order of the track listing (they work together really well despite the differences in the songs) or just pick each song at random ... I think at least a couple of the songs will surprise you either way.
Ideally, whatever order you choose, find the live performances (For The Fox God has them all I think and has added English subtitles if you need them).

    I think you'll like 'Momochrome'.
There's a great video from that same venue, PIA Arena.
As well as a piano adaptation on the THE FIRST TAKE UA-cam Channel.
I prefer the concert version, but Su and Moa's pure vocals really shine in the stripped down version.
Not sure what part of the USA you're from, but BABYMETAL did perform at 29 shows here last year.
They did a big co-headlining tour with Dethklok.

I just looked at the dates for their tour last year and the closest show they played was Toronto which with traffic plus any border delays is a 4-5 hour drive. I'm sure I'll catch them at some point though!

BabyMetal has a gimmick, not, are a gimmick ! Lot of difference. The problem was no one told the girls that 😁, and they performed their hearts out
and worked hard on the project over the years .
Also, the manager, a lifelong Metalhead, was serious as well . He knew he had exceptional talent with the 3 girls, especially Su .even at a young age was an excellent vocalist and performer .
You're right about Su she does not get respect from mainstream music or media that she deserves . Although she is in the lead as best female metal vocalist of 2024, at the moment, i do not know if the vote has finished yet but had nearly half the votes cast .
So hopefully, she gets reconition she deserves 😁

Great reaction, thanks and welcome (back) to BABYMETAL. I see you already know them pretty well.
You are right, and not only for this song but the whole album, The Other ONE, is their most mature work till date.
They don't tend to "re-use" their big shows stages. Maybe some platform here and there. This one, from BABYMETAL Begins, was used only in two shows at PIA Arena MM: Black and Clear Night (April 1st and 2nd 2023).
About the "visibility" of the band, it's a recurring topic and we have discussed it many times. In my opinion, it's conditioned by the stage itself. The previous concerts at Makuhari (BABYMETAL Returns) are even worse on that aspect due to the type of stage: linear in the middle of the venue with the band placed in one end. On the other hand, their most recent arena-sized shows (Legend-MM), are way better. But yes, in the end of the day, Koba (their producer) or whoever mixes the final cut of the pro-shots is who decides to show the band more or not. The "issue" disappears when they are on tour and perform in smaller venues with standard stages, so the band is right there.
About "Divine Attack", I don't know if this is their "best" song (I guess that term is a quite subjective) but I like it, a lot. It's well structured, elegant, with a smooth drive, cool drum & bass parts, nice orchestral touch, some heavy riffing and, of course Su-metal's amazing vocals. Not to mention that she is credited for the lyrics on this one for the first time. That's a really big achievement for her and (in her own words) a "dream" and "a final goal in life".

Awesome man, great reaction! You are absolutely right, this song did get stuck in my head and I keep listening to it on repeat haha. Also, this song was Su-metal's first as a credited lyricist. To touch on a few points you made:
*A more mature sound:* Yes, Babymetal's 4th album definitely carries a more serious and mature sound with almost no "kawaii/cuteness" to it. With that said, post-4th album, they are re-introducing some of the "cuteness" they had before, but, in a tasteful and grown up fashion.
*Band presence:* I was definitely not too happy with ~2019 - 2023 period where the Kami Band is showcased less and less. However, in hindsight much of it made sense. They lost a guitarist (RIP Mikio), original band wasn't able to tour as often due to commitments as Babymetal increased intensity, addition of Kami Band West, Covid, then Babymetal hiatus, etc. etc. In addition, this show (Apr 2023) was the 2nd concert held after Babymetal's return from hiatus, and the start of Kami Band West being sole backing band. Fast foreward, after 1 year of touring, we see the Kami Band west being showcased almost as much as in older Babymetal videos (return of multiple intro/solos, and much more screen time), especially with the recent Legend MM shows in Mar 2024. Thus, things are looking great on this front!
Suggestion: Check out "Momobanger", new 3rd member Momoko's 21st birthday special of Headbanger done on her last night as a 20-year old. Best version of the song "Headbanger"!

The bestcsong? Not really. What really made this song unusual Was that Su wrote the Lyrics for this song. Her first Mark in this aspect. Yes Su doesn't really have to fear any Band. And I get the feeling that even Moa and Momo could compete in this area. They have quite a range. Not only F. Heros Collab with Bodyslam and Babymetal "Leave it all behind proved this.

We can't talk about this song without mentioning that Su helped write the lyrics for this song. The Other One album is by far their most mature sound. Also, Su has been in the top 5 female vocal artist for just about 7 years now. Since you haven't kept up with them. In short Yui left officially in 2018. Su and Moa went on as a duo for two albums. During this time, they use back up dancers in Yui's spot. They didn't sing and are not on the albums. Until March 2023 when Momoko one of those backup dancers became the new official member. Since then, they released two songs with AKA Momometal on them. Metal! and a F.Hero collaboration with the band Bodyslam called Leave it All Behind. As you know Babymetal is on tour now in the US. I highly suggest finding a way to go see Babymetal live. As for what song to react to by them next. Do yourself the favor and do the whole last album and those two songs they released after that. The foxhole is deep and full of surprises.

I'd like to suggest you check out "Road of Resistance, Live in Japan (Official)", it is from 2015 when they were in what some considered to be a "fad" period; it is one of the best single metal song/performances I have ever seen. At about the 3/4 point in the song Su-Metal yells "Bring Them On" in Japanese, almost certainly a response to negative press saying similar about them ten years ago. They've won 30ish industry awards for things like best band, best lead singer, best japanese band, best international band, best live band, etc - they are just phenominal and have been for over a decade.
There is so much to find with them, and it is all excellent. Hope to see more!

Welcome back to the Foxhole and BabyMetal's metalverse 🦊🤘🌐
I don't remember following your BM journey but I'm always glad to see more reactors and old BM fans coming back to hear more of this amazing group.
This was the 1st single out of five released in October 2022, part of the new album "The Other One" released later in March 2023 and is totally a banger. SuMetal got the lyrics credits on this and all of us are proud and happy she reached one of her dreams. She totally rocks!❤️
    Here's some official info:
    Divine Attack - Shingeki (CAVALRY)
    _The time has come._
_Trascending many barriers and creating many legends, where will BABYMETAL head next? The power and dynamism of the song depicts a cavalry preparing for their future battle._
"Divine Attack - Shingeki" got some drum&bass combined with the heavy riffs of metal sound.
They're giving us a new lore and a metalverse with 10 different worlds and songs that are connected in this concept album.
We can say that this song carry the spirit and message of songs like Road Of Resistance but this is more like a call to arms and fight for your future.
This footage was taken from BabyMetal Begins - The Other One Clear Night, PIA Arena MM, Yokohama in April 2nd, the Black Night took place in April 1st and you can see that clip in MAYA official live MV. This was the first night with MomoMetal as the new official member, the night prior to this they're wearing the old battle dress from Metal Galaxy era while in this you can see them with the new iridiscent costume. MomoMetal (Momoko Okazaki) was one of the three avengers (or backup dancers part of the lore) since 2019. We all proud of MomoMetal being finally part of this group.
The backing band you saw are called the Kami Band, they were send by the Fox God to help the girls with the metal sound, they only play live and aren't official members, during early era they used to have a Japanese set of musicians but prior to this when they started to perform live they got a fake band called "baby-bones" (you'll see them in the Gimme Chocolate MV and many more live performance before 2013 mainly), later in 2019 they incorporate a new set of western musicians when doing live tour and they were part of this concert and clip you just saw as well the whole World Tour 2023, we called them Western Kami Band.
There is an official visualizer with the album studio sound released the same day in October and you can see only the two of them back then, these new shows on DVD/BD they're promoting are part of this historical event when MomoMetal was crowned as the third official member.
    Next suggestion:
    - MAYA live at PIA Arena MM 2023 official MV.
If you want more clips safe to react and with proshot quality go into "For The Fox God" and "The Foxhole" channel. I'm gonna leave in my next comment where to get more clips safe to react if YT allows me to do it.

I just had a coversation with someone whether Babymetal really were a gimmick at all, even in the early days.
It boiled down to whether they were supposed to be a gimmick or they were just so radicaly different that they appeared to be a gimmick.
I argued that adding something that isn't related to music to get attention like face paint, masks, mascots etc is a gimmick. But is being young, pioneering a new sub-gernre of music and adding choreography (intrinsically related to music) really a gimmick or is it just being unique, different and in retrospect radical and non-conformist?
The lore is gimmicky to the point of self satire, but that is not what people refer to when they are talking about them being a gimmick (or ex-gimmick)
Wasn't it more fate due to hard work, talent and determination that is resopnisble for their breakthrough success, rather than a gimmick that caught on or got lucky.
I might be wrong about this, but i'm starting to challenge the idea that the were ever really a gimmick in the first place.
    Good reaction BTW.

@@Grington300 Absolutely, these girls practically devoted their lives to metal, it was never a game of cosplaying turned proffesional. It was destiny. Su was declared Queen of metal way earlier than normal just to save time from having to do it later.😄
They had a stark choice at an early age, become Jpop stars with a guaranteed high rate of success, or become metal stars with a one in a hundred chance of success. They chose metal. To me that will always be one of the most metal AF decisions ever made. Daring to add cuteness and dancing to metal as if they didn't know or care it was going to piss elitists off is also a metal AF attitude in hindsight.
Whilst it's true they could have fallen back on Jpop if what they did failed badly, and that door was open, they could have done that at anytime anyway, but they never have done, even when offered. They are staying metal.
There is way more money and fame in pop music than metal in Japan. What they did seems bizzarely counter-intuitive career wise for girls who thought they were destined to be pop stars.
Everything about this band is bizzarely paradoxical and mysterious, as well as endlessly entertaining.
