She's great! I was a teenager when the 90s arrived. When I first heard and saw Garbage on MTV it was mindblowing. I did not know then women existed that are so confident, articulate, strong - and sexy in a very different way that I know women (Yeah, but what do you know about women as a teenager?).
She's one of my female icons in music, together with women such as Dolores O'Riordan, Kim Gordon, Björk and ... harrumph ... Susanna Hoffs.
If Girls need a role model Shirley is a good one.

Same year for me, except I was 5 and was watching them on MTV, couldn't buy my own albums at that point.
Every time I see an interview with her, I'm impressed all over again at what a great lady she is. The ultimate Rock chick in my opinion. Oh and she has a great analogue sound system in that room, especially the valve amp and speakers...I'm a bit of HiFi geek.

One of the best interviews I've ever seen
Like many, I fancied the shit out of Shirley Manson. To use modern parlance, I would've hit it raw and never pulled out.
Look up more interviews with her, she's really profound and a badass, especially as time goes on.
try watching/listening to Howard Stern.. he's the best in my opinion. not sure who you're into but just listened to a Sandra Bernhard interview (she's been on many times), she's amazing, of course a ton or musicians, comics, actors, etc. Gwen, Courtney and Madonna (Gwen and Madonna have been in the more recent years) the interviews are like 2 hour-long, in depth and personal... he's gained the respect he did not always have as has shifted his focus on these interviews. it's a rarity to have people of this caliber open up about almost everything. As a fan of his in general I notice this evolution... definitely recommend!

I still to date listen to Garbage on a weekly basis. Love every album. They've stuck to their sound perfectly. Always had hoped for at least one single between Gwen and Shirley.

What started from curiosity of her outspokenness, honesty, and fearlessness became amazement of it all. It's awesome to see her pressing on through the hate and negativity, and still do what she loves.

If I cycle in the rain (being in the Netherlands, that is about to happen, a little less now due to covid), I always have "I'm only happy when it rains" in my head and frequently sing that aloud when cycling. It's been in my head among other great Garbage songs ever since witnessing Garbage Live on Pinkpop and Werchter festivals. One of my 90's? big influences

my moms Scottish, don't need a crash course... there are tanning beds, sun, unhealthy foods, drugs, etc. pretty much everywhere. she obviously takes good care of herself and has the money to do so. the American aesthetic is totally different than European lifestyle, my moms got red-hair looks quite a bit younger. I was a massive fan of Garbage at 10-11, one of the first shows I saw, so it's a big jarring that almost 20 years has flashed by so quickly.
She obviously does take care of herself and even more, she hasn't buckled down to getting plastic surgeries on her face which probably helped as well.
Plus the fact, she still dresses the way she wants to, pink hair and all. I feel like that can help retain a youthful fire as well.

Courtney's life's a mess and she carries on, I admire her.
Shirley is my idol in way that.. I mean, look at she in 50, she paints her hair in bright colors and wears cool clothes at concerts, she has a cool figure and she still make music and give a show.
She is an example of the fact that a man can be a bright person and live a bright life even in 50 years. In my country(Russia) I can't even imagine seeing a man at least 30 years old with pink hair on the street.....Our mentality does not understand the external expression of the inner world, and it's very sad sometimes. .. Anyway, Shirley shows that you always can be yourself. She still has her inimitable style, her mind and her charm and I love it all in her.
She's been a role model and an idol of mine since the beginning of her career. What a fantastic interview.

awesome... I love her. one of my first albums 12 years old saw them in concert. Shirley is so enthralling and badass. My moms Scottish which was another connection for me. Great to hear her now greater to have got to experienced them as a young girl.

To ( the three of) us down here she's 'Big Shirley', we love her, her music, and that she also speaks out is of unseen value for every human who does not have a platform. We were to criticise or at least slightly distance ourselves on her 7 seconds about Courtney Love, at times we think it's almost like putting a good word out for a corrupt politician, but we walked away from thinking anything, and we guess Shirley Manson might be kind of aware anyway. Shirley has her reasons to put a better word out for C. Love. We respect her - Shirley Manson as someone of who we think has real reasons - which she has thought over before she speaks them out. The whole entire rest of this interview is (to us)one of the few of artist interviews worth listening to more than once.

She should have continued with her early lyrics talent - but instead became corrupt on all levels to get into fam light. // I understand if you'd want some links - i only just read your comment comming back from work - 3 min time for net and emails. But Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth for example wrote down what others only remember in their heads, try Kim Gordon's 'Girl In A Band', chapter ..(? 32) .. on Courtney Love. Fame doesn't justify to get justified on anything. Money doesn't either.

I feel like we get so used to seeing artists who enter into "Interview Mode", where they kind of just repeat the same couple of catchphrases and never really reveal.anything, then when you finally see someone like Shirley, who almost can't help but be themselves, be honest, genuine and actually SAY something for once...it really bursts out, it's so fucking refreshing

Great interview! One of the women I loved as a teen- I love her still. I may not be a fan of 'third wave' brand of feminism, though nothing in the interview really bothered me. She's got a great sense of humor, she doesn't have the more millennial penchant for holding back & censoring herself lest she 'offend' someone, & relating her personal experiences struggling with body image & overcoming her demons was helpful to me, a lot of women can relate. Men also have insecurities, so I don't see it as a 'feminist' issue, it's a human issue.
I'm going to see Garbage tonight in Santa Monica, but first I must dye my hair powder pink!!

I know In the US there was a blacklist of music that radio stations refused to play because it was deemed provocative or had "provocative titles" e.g burning down the house by the talking heads
