Tactics Ogre, both the original and Let Us Cling Together. Plus, Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis.
Great video ! I loved Wasteland 3 and happy that it was so high on your list.
Same here!
I'll look into some of them :) I appreciate having a large enough list to go into a lot of breadth
I have played half of this list and I must say divinity 2 is by far the superior, so I think it deserves number 1 spot. Its not only one of the best tactical rpg ever, its also one of the best games of all time. Classic in every aspect.
true true
lol
True
True! Unfortunately I haven’t found a game on par with divinity 2. I’m hunkering for something of that same level. Too bad I don’t have the option to play the new baldurs gate beta
@@7leggedspider9 That will be Baldur's Gate 3 I think.
Great video! You opened my eyes to some really cool games that I never even heard of. I already played or heard of most of the games on this list, but I never even heard of King Arthur: A Knights Tale, along with some other cool games. Thanks a bunch!
Glad you enjoyed!
Amazing Video!! I put'em all in my Steam's wishlist. Thank you!!!!
Hope you enjoy it!
Actually I love your list and would agree with most of it. Thank you for taking the time to make it! One game I would like to see make the list though that I am not sure if you played is Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark.
Great list ! Recently fallen in love with Troubleshooters, amazing game with amazing devs, cheap for hundreds of hours of content. Glad it's getting some recognition.
Glad you enjoy it!
I love that troubleshooter is getting love, its a great great game
the fact you have Battle Brothers on the list, i sat through the whole video, fantastic list !
I was expecting Troubleshooters and was not disappointed! I really like the game, it has so many mechanics and a really enthusiastic dev team.
Best Tactical/Strategy RPG games but no Gloomhaven is criminal!
I hope this genre never dies. I'd argue that TRPGs alone possess the most replayability out of all single-player genres, including standard RPGs.
What do you mean by standard rpgs?
trpgs are what got me into "regular" rpgs, namely Shining Force. I will always have love for this genre.
@@squidwardtentacles2736 So what is trpg?
@@danieladamczyk4024 tactical rpg. some use srpg for strategy rpg but they're similar.
@@squidwardtentacles2736 How you tell them apart?
Great to see Heroes of Might and Magic make your list :) ....for me HOMM 3 was the introduction to turn based tactical gameplay, and I still consider it the best from the series
HOMM3 > ALL tactical rpg strategies, not only HOMM V.
@@alexandrupatru2892 true
Warhammer 40k: Mechanicus and Othercide are underrated. Mechanicus for being a great 40k game with nothing to do with Space Marines/Chaos, and Othercide for one of the coolest art styles I've seen in a long time. Daemonhunters being on this list fills me with joy.
Great video. Like others, I've played enough of these to get an idea of how awesome the ones I haven't played will be
Glad you like them!
One of my favorite games growing up was Ogre Battle 64, so i might try Symphony of War. Ty for that list :)
Fell Seal: Mark of the Arbiter is a pretty great FFT successor and got its full release not that long ago. Shadowrun Dragonfall and Hong Kong both would be honorable mentions imo.
Fell Seal is really fun!
Will vouch for this game, lots of builds and hardly any pigeonholed abilities.
This is cool, thanks for doing this. Agree with others that FFT was too low -- that soundtrack my GOD and there still really aren't many (any?) other games like it which were able to mix customizability and difficulty so well. Also would include one of the Baldur's Gates, not really strategy RPGs in my opinion but then neither is the Divinity Series, if you include one you have to include the other. Lastly, good to see Banner Saga in here, really enjoyed that series a lot. Thanks for putting this together, keep up the good work!
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
dos2 is def number 1 for me too, everything about it is just so good, only wish your char had more voice lines esp if you choose a special char instead of making a custom one
I never really enjoy the gameplay & pace of "tactical RPG", until i played divinity original sin 2 (that's the first "divinity" series i've ever played) and im instantly fall in love with it.
it became my top 3 rpg games of all time.
There was another NIS RPG that had the Ogre Battle/Symphony of war mechanic of building a squad of units. It was Soul Nomad and the world Eaters, originally on PS2 and recently released on modern consoles. Good times. And if you manage to unlock the second story path, everyone is crazy.
New to CPRGs and the like so this video is great. New subscriber thanks
Welcome aboard!
@@JoelRPG ty 😊
Very surprised not to see any Tactics Ogre there! And yes Tactics Ogre Reborn (updated version of the psp version) is coming on Nov 11 this year. As others mentioned, Mario Rabbids is also a great new entry in the genre.
Yep.. amazing game.
I am not sure who started to call the games in this list TRPG or SRPG, but they are not. They are CRPG. Games like fire emblem, tactics ogre etc are t/srpg. They are quite a lot different type of game than these.
Cool video here. It was pretty cool to see all these tactical/strategy RPG games but, for me, it was missing one very important game - *_'FRONT MISSION 3'._* You included _'Final Fantasy Tactics: WOTL'_ as an exception but, I would have included _'FM3'_ as well. It is a game that was also made by Squaresoft, during their height of popularity as the video game RPG "king of the hill".
_'FRONT MISSION 3'_ is quite possibly my favorite of all the tactical/srpg games. I love it all - the characters, the storyline, the gameplay, the graphics, the music - *_EVERYTHING._* If anybody out there likes _'Final Fantasy Tactics'_ but, also likes mechs, then the _'FRONT MISSION'_ saga is worth checking out. Especially now that new remakes of _'FRONT MISSON 1st', 'FRONT MISSION 2' & 'FRONT MISSION 3'_ have just been announced for the Nintendo Switch. _'FRONT MISSION 1st'_ is scheduled to come out in November 2022...
Nice list. I would have loved to see Gears Tactics mentionned, but overall it's good list.
great work
Thanks!
The only bad thing about Divinity Original Sin 2 is that it's such a wonderful game that nobody talks about the first Divinity Original Sin that it's amazing as well even if it's not as perfect as the second one.
not really, its easy to build a imbalance character in DOS1 with percentage based block and status resist. But crafting system in DOS 1 is better. I remember i used a crafted bow to the end of the game
I had to stop playing the first game after a few hours and absolutely hated the scaling loot system in DoE II. Find an amazing item after beating ah ard boss? Tough luck, in an hour you'll find something on a random enemy that makes it obsolete. I hope they fix this in Baldurs gate 3 :)
I've completed #16. Symphony of War: The Nephilim Saga (PC, Switch)!
Good list! Happy to see some of my favorite series on the list, although I'd make the argument that Tactics Ogre: LUCT and Fire Emblem: Awakening deserved a spot too.
Good call!
Don’t know if these were considered for the list, but here is some of my favorites that I didn’t see.
Master of Magic (getting a remake this year December)
Age of Wonders
Shining Force 1 & 2
Dynasty Tactics 1 & 2
Pathfinder Kingmaker
One that I think will be great (Lost Eidolons out today)
Troubleshooters is such an undervalued masterpiece. Its need more attention. I agree with the top 3.
Tactics Ogre Reborn just came out recently. Very high quality game where almost everything affects the storyline.
I would've loved to see dark deity on the list, mostly because it's reminding me of my love for the genre as I'm playing through right now. I just love the old school fire emblem aesthetic but much more forgiving
Tyranny by Obsidian Entertainment. Underrated game.
Tyranny has horrible combat and its not tactical at all.
system batle is shit
Las year I played Wasteland 3 and made me love the genre!
Good list I would add slay the spire and kings bounty armored princess.
when it comes to the HOMM games, for me, nothing beats Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Complete, it has everything any RPG fan could want from a heroes game. I thought number 4 went a bit too far being able to send units out on their own without a hero to lead them.
I do agree with your number 1 game though, that game is so good and messing around with different builds is so much fun. Baldurs gate 3 is a game I'm looking forward to.
Don't even bother, this is a recency bias list.
Isnt the Tactics Ogre re-remaster still coming out this year?
Another game worth mentioning is Tyranny. Their inventive magic system gives it a unique twist and I believe it is underrated.
unparalleled world building too
Saddens me that front mission 3 for the ps1 isn't here, hands down my favourite strategy jrpg
I hope you play Shining Force III, Scenarios 1-3 someday. The entirety of the game runs across 3 distinct adventures, over 90 battles, and a story of epic proportions. Truly one of the greatest Strategy RPGs of all-time that so few people ever played.
100% agree! my brother and I discovered sf1 and 2 on genesis/mega drive and didn't know about sf3 until years later and Saturns were hard to come by but I bought one just to try the 1st scenario and fell in love with it. ended up selling the Saturn and then found out years later that 2nd and 3rd scenario were translated and I played through emulation and it was like living a dream to finish the story....so epic and memorable. they need to re-release it for current gen consoles /pc I think alot of fans would be happy plus pull in new fans. I was so excited when they announced shining Force mobile remake because it looked gorgeous....crushed when they canceled it.
@@squidwardtentacles2736 right??!?! I actually imported Scenario 2 and 3 back when they launched and printed out a whole translated script to play them, like 300 pages 😭😭😭
I now emulate as well and play the three scenarios every year. Just so good.
@@graciaman that's dedication, man kudos to you! I wish the love that goes into Shining Force games went into more srpgs, it feels like a dying breed on consoles.
Is it actually badass and not some weeabo Garbo like modern Fire Emblem?
I like the grittier Fire Emblem Path of Radiance type of style
@@squidwardtentacles2736 Might I ask how you got/which emulator you used to get SFII to work? I've been trying to play it for months, and have heard so much great stuff about it. I've just re-played SF I & II and SF CD and would LOVE to play SF III but I simply can't get it to run on anything I try!
Absolute Tactics: Daughters of Mercy,
God Wars: Definitive Edition and Brigantine: Legend of Runersia are three cracking Switch SRPGs I can’t recommend enough and no one talks about Tactics V on Switch which is an amazing low-poly, 16bit hybrid look to it and plays beautifully on the OLED.
It doesn't actually suck to have to play as a specific character - as long as that character and the story are very well-written, I actually even prefer it that way.
Love Fire emblem, played the saga since Game cube, Divinity 2 is the one that I am playing now , trying to understand the commands and tactics :)
Phantom Doctrine - 1981 spy cell simulator, with Xcom-like combat, base management and worldmap campaign. Some randomization for replayability.
Interesting list. I would personally place Xcom 2 as nr. 1.
Been on a battle brother binge
great list. I would add tower of time
Good choice!
The very first UFO: Enemy Unknown places high for me.
I love Lost Eidolons. You gotta put it on the list
You should have a look at the dungeon of Naheulbeuk. It has fun fights
In the Xcom 2 segment he states that it's no Final Fantasy Tactics, that Xcom it is way more difficult. But maybe we didn't play the same games. FFT has the most insane difficulty spikes I've ever seen. Even at the start. Bosses can only be beaten in very specific ways, and there are levels where you can loose in turn 1 without even being able to play. On the other hand, I remember going through Xcom 2 pretty smoothly, in normal difficulty, only finding somewhat bigger challenge in the expansion bosses. Great list though
Mi favorito es Divinity Original Sin 2 y Wasteland 2 😊
Wish I could try three houses, here's hoping it gets a PC port sometime. I probably wouldn't have included the CRPGs, though the ones included here do indeed have decent tactical combat. I might have included an Age of Wonders game over a Heroes of Might and Magic game, because they have better tactical combat; maybe age of wonders 3 or planetfall.
Everything else I could think of was included. I might give Fell Seal: Arbiter's mark an honorable mention though, it's quite reminiscent of FFT, though it's writing probably isn't as good as FFT.
Doubtful, Nintendo never ports first party games to PC.
u can try playing three houses using yuzu
I'm surprised Tactics Ogre Reborn isn't on this list.
The absence of Jagged Alliance 2 compromises the integrity of this list.
Missing one: Tactics Ogre Let us Cling Together. That game is better than Final Fantasy Tactics, but it is overlooked as always :(
I'm glad to see Disgaea 5 and Valkyria Chronicles 4, but Disgaea 4 and Valkyria Chronicles 1 deserve to be remembered as well.
I know how hard it is to make a list, so well done ^^
Don’t sleep on Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope, and the Tactics Ogre Remake coming out later this year! Both of those are no doubt going to be heavy hitters for the genre.
Literally tactics ogre is the only game I’m waiting on
Very NIce!
Can't argue with the top 6.
Dungeons of Dreadmore is a crazy tatical RPG that is pretty unknown.
You can add the new released game Miasma chronicles to the list too
When baldurs gate3 releases it's def gonna be one of the best
Im sad you did not include Pathfinder Kingmaker...until I saw you also didnt include the prequels for the others. Fair game. xD
i put the sequel tho :D
If choosing between them I know a lot of people prefer WoTR, me included.
you should play UnderRail, it's great!
Good list but If is a list of "All Time" you should include more older games. Also Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivors Overclocked is definetely up there. But I get it, is a DS/3DS game.
it's time to reassess Resonance of fate and Jagged Alliance 2 and maybe
Desperados III where Shogun tactics also Wartales !
Heroes 5 instead of 3? This is serious heresy my friend.
i like 5 better because the graphics are more enjoyable :)
@@JoelRPG Me too 👍😌
As someone who only plays single player, I tend to go back to 5 more often than 3.
@@JoelRPG that's a poor argument. 3 is superior in almost every aspect.
three starts out good but became bloated towards the end. 5 has a more cohesive narrative from start to finish.
Wasteland 3, Gears Tactics, Divinity: orginal sin 2 and Miasma Chronicles.
Love your list, but gotta say my favourite ever is Shining force III for saturn
Fair enough!
How can you get all the teammates to join? in Dinivity D:
Damn no Baldur’s Gate 3? It’s still not fully released but the early access is really good.
I really like the combat system and tactics in DOS2, can't deny it. However besides the combat, I think POE2 Deadfire is a much better game overall.
All of those look interesting and I agree about the games I have also played. Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Triangle Strategy are among the best games I've played in recent years. Most of the strategy RPGs I have played are retro games and I look forward to playing some of these more recent games. Along with the two games I had previously mentioned, some of my favorites are Dark Wizard, the early Shining Force games, the Langrisser series, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, and Fire Emblem: Awakening. I look forward to further exploring the genre and your list here will be very helpful to me. Thank you for making it.
Did they ever fix wasteland 3’s constant crashes on Xbox?
symphony of war is really good. played for 10 h straight
Three Houses gets better after first playthrough and with DLCs.
It is worth it.
Golden Sun, honorary mention
Underrail, Atom RPG + Trudograd.
wartales are pretty impresive too
Aww, no Arbiter? Also, you do know that Tactics Ogre is getting a PC remaster on the 11th of November, right?
Forget to mention Phantom Doctrine, a Cold War spionage turn based RPG
thanks god someone create symphony of war which is similar like ogre battle
Dos2 is magnificence personified
"Top 25 Best Tactical/Strategy Games with RPG elements from the last 5 years + a few classics"
Already have 95% jf this list but thanks for video anyway. :)
Great 👍
I feel bad that I've probably played 90% this list guess have to do the other 10% now
Yikes at the hard R during the phoenix point section.
Пехота атакует... конницу)😂😂
For Mobile there are alot of Tactical RPG. I guess developing Turn Based RPG is less time taking compare to other RPG sub-genre
there is alos Gear tactics ( gears of war) its prettyyyy good !!!
Weird not to see either of the Baldur's Gate games here, seeing as they influenced most of the games on this list, which wouldn't exist without those games. Also Tyranny deserves a shout!
tyranny is not as good as you expect from a game with such an interesting and unique storyline. locations are empty as heck, music is like where, fights are pretty boring. I think it can be perceived as a good text-center rpg but nothing more
@@user-se1bp8ej7g The story aspect is definitely the best part of the game, I agree.
We need a new ogre battle and operation darkness!!
put the date of release of each game please
I don't agree with your list, but that is ok because at the end of the day we all have our own opinion. Still good picks, mine would just be completely different if 'of all time'
is concerned. Those lists should just be '25 GREAT games', then you can avoid any issues.
Yeah...I can't accept a list with FF Tactics not in top 3 lol
I have sunk 1,175 hours into Battle Brothers. That is all.
I hope there will be more games that are not turn based snorefests
