- Pokemon Competitive Singles has seen a big shakeup with the release of Gen 9's new DLC. Although Garganacl fell down to UU after the first Post-DLC Tier shift, it appears to be rising back up and achieving great results at the high ladder.
Garganacl's Curse + Earthquake set and Iron Defense + Body Press set are effective win conditions. And with less Covert Cloak usage at the moment, Salt Cure is a very effective progress making tool once again.

From Pikachu and Charizard, to Palafin and Roaring Moon, The new Pokemon games, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, have introduced a lot of new faces. Can I succeed in one of the best android games of all time? If so, I'm gonna get myself a Walmart bakery Pokemon cake to celebrate.
Gholdengo is a Pokemon made of pure gold. He must have done some online business management courses to accumulate all that wealth. Or perhaps he might want to learn how to make money playing video games on UA-cam. In any case, he's a powerful metagame force, with absolutely no interest in online game development schools.

I liked using it to counter gliscor salt cure first turn while it used protect so it didn't Tera then avalanche next turn
I like how thematically cohesive this pokemon is. Ghost resistance has a lot of cultural significance with how salt was thought to drive out spirits. Salt Cure is such an interesting move, and the fact that it happens to punish two of the best defensive types just aligns so well with how salt affects steel and water. If only they didn't simply stick arms and legs on a salt crystal I could appreciate this thing a lot more.

The only ways I can think of to punish Salt Cure are Clefable, Covert Cloak, or Substitute. It's one of the most spammable moves Game Freak has ever created.
The ability shield dust WOULD be another good one,but the only mons to get it are weak bugs so it doesnt really matter
@@RafaelVitor-fh3ey Ribombee is a super powerful shield dust user, albeit youll rarely see the match up bc the bee is usually a suicide lead
News are coming out that Flinchinator is going to turn Garganacl into a salt lick for Wyrdeer in order to combat its overbearing presence in OU. This is insane.

I heard that Garganacl is creating a side hustle called Salt’n’Shake with fellow UUBLers Kommo-o and Garchomp (Head of Deliveries and Customer Relations).
Let’s hope this startup allows Garg to make enough to retire from his pyramid scheming.

@@misters6749 Mark to Market, or M2M, is where an asset or liability which can fluctuate in value (think a car, boat, or plot of land) is valued based on what it could be sold for at that time, rather than at a historic cost which is depreciated. It's VERY infamous for being a contributor to Enron's collapse as it can be used to fudge the numbers on estimated value of contracts and deals and make them seem more impressive.
Basically, Garg could be lying about the profitability of Salt 'n Shake to throw suspicion off of a new, hidden pyramid scheme he's cooking up.
@@Jfrost9101 but whom would be in charge of running such a scheme for Garg? Perhaps the Illusory Zoroark with its ability to take on the guise of different people it could be taking out loans in other peoples names and making payments to the new pyramid scheme?
Perhaps he would have enlisted Rotom as a spy to pose as household appliances and then possess smartphones to take pics of bank statements and relay them to Garg to be used in dastardly deads?

Another thing that makes salt cure good is that its not a status effect. So you can burn or toxic a mon and then also salt cure them on top of that.
Garganacl isn't salty about this turn of events.
I have a Garganacl that uses the same move set as the one at 7:31, but with terra fighting and a grassy seed.
I had it on a team with tyranitar and arboliva, and the amount of forfeits you get when your sand boosted, grassy seed/ iron defense boosted rock wall turns into a body press sweeper is hysterical.
Literally my fav gen 9 Pokémon from the moment I saw it. When it dropped to UU I was genuinely in shock

A couple weeks after SV came out my friends and I had a friendly little 1v1 6's tournament, I went like 9-0 with Garganacle using Iron Defense, Salt Cure, Recover, and Stealth Rock. Even my friends' Meowscarada couldn't kill the bugger. Tera Ghost with Purifying Salt holding Amulet, no stat drops, no status, and only one weakness made it crazy stronk.

Since before Gen 8, I've been saying that Rock should resist Ghost. Tombstones in ancient times we're meant to prevent the dead from rising, and many gems are said to ward off spirits.
When I found out Purifying Salt existed, I popped off so hard.
Now we just need Rock to Resist Bug and Ice and it'll finally be a viable defensive type rivaling Steel.

I just love its design and shiny and its probably one of my favourite new pokemon added in gen 9 I believe it might be able to make its way up to OU even if it doesn't by usage it will have a good place in it

I think Gliscor was the biggest reason for the Garg falling. It provided a lot of the same utility as a defensive backbone, with only one glaring weakness to ice, spike immunity, and knock off, as well as not being afraid of the latter.
Garg's biggest issue is it gets deleted by the splashable Make It Rain or the great coverage move Grass Knot. VoltTurn also limits the chip from Salt Cure

The nightmares are back
A fun thing you can do with Garganacl is run Curse with Tera Ghost and Block to prevent switching. This is obviously a gimmick set but if you love residual damage, this might be the gimmick for you.
That's evil.
The ghost resistance makes thematic sense however I think it should also have reduce steel and water type attacks.

I too was always confident that Garg would return to OU eventually, it dropping in the first place was actually a surprise to me.

I think with the new DLC people thought, "forget Gargancl I'm gonna use Iron Boulder!" and everyone went HO to build teams out of the new threats... the Garg was sitting there with the sponge bob caveman face like "huh where'd everybody go!" They tried to leave him behind but he Garged UU too hard and got kicked out... Then OU players began to experiment again and realized "hey, no one is using protection from the Garg anymore" and suddenly he was Garging people all over the top of the tier once again.
It will be interesting to see if the meta can handle adding in all of the safeguards against getting Garged on or if that will prove exploitable in the new meta. Will be interesting to see how players take advantage of this.

Neither of these pokemon are stall. They generate offensive momentum, especially gliscor with all his hazard stacking.
Stall just seems to mean "it doesn't die in one hit and I don't like it" to smogon players.

People really remembered how good this guy is huh. I was one of the few that kept using him a lot. Salt Cure is just too good to ignore.
I do think part of Garganacl's fall (and subsequent rise) has to do with the role Tera had on teams during that period, as since Teal Mask's launch, it's been infinitely better to utilize Tera on a boost sweeper, effectively using Tera as an on-demand Gen V Gem-boost/Tera Blast Coverage to break past your most problematic matchup. Basically, Tera has been far more impactful when you can just use it to outright win the game instead of using it on Garg for less impact. Of course, those Pokemon were problems and got removed from the meta (and honestly were probably problems even without Tera, Tera was just an extra tool they could use to overpower their checks).
With mons like Roaring Moon and Sneasler now gone, it really seems like Garg has one of the highest impact Teras among available Pokemon and benefits greatly from being on teams where there isn't a dedicated Tera user or it is the dedicated Tera user, because it almost needs that flexibility in a metagame with all these powerful Water, Fighting, and Ground types running around.
Put another way, I think Garganacl's recent rise is actually a good sign that the metagame is finally starting to heal, something I at least, was worried wouldn't happen in time before the next DLC. Unfortunately, the next DLC does happen to be right around the corner, so there's a solid chance Garg goes back to square 1 here and has to wait for the metagame to settle in again.
first time seeing this monster, I thought someone had dropped some Minecraft mobs in to my Pokemon game, then i had seen it ability.. and thought someone hacked this monster in to this game, its just so good, and what kills me is Game freak could do the same thing for Avalugg. What I would do is give Avalugg a ability, that makes it take no dmg from fire moves, and when its on the field all ice moves get a x1 dmg buff.
Garg was never bad. Just run body press curse recover salt cure with tera ghost. Curse ignores pesky substitutes

gholdengo isn't immune to status, gholdengo is immune to status moves. it can still be paralyzed by nuzzle, burnt by flamethrower, etc

Sometimes it hurts knowing that Garganacl is proof that the devs do know exactly what's wrong with Rock types and how they can be improved... but Aggron is sitting and rotting with no Mega, no recovery move, not even having the Rock Head + Head Smash combo to his name is enough to save my man.
The fall of Garganacl began after the dlc bringin in new/returning pokemons. But that doesn't mean it got powercrept.

Certified Garganacl moment
In a tier where Heatran and Iron Hands exists, Garganacl was the only mon that was unanimously voted to ban of the three when the new tier shift came out which is wild because it only generally has like 3 movements it can run and one viable EV spread with minor tweaks.
With max HP and 20-28evs in Defense, GGNacl easily hit 404/300/300 depending on the nature which shits on basically every physical attacker in the tier plus the aforementioned Salt Cure.
Signature move for now….
