  • For many, the idea of being a video game tester is a dream job. But what actually goes into becoming a games tester and what skills (beyond your keyboard and joypad skills) must you demonstrate in order to succeed in the industry. I was lucky to talk to Cosmin Burescu, who is one of the many testers working at Ubisoft, about getting into the industry and how to rise through the game testing ranks in this dream job.
If you want to reach out to Cosmin directly, his LinkedIn profile is below:
    / cosmin-burescu
    Questions included:
    - What brought you to where you are now?
    - What tools do game testers use?
    - What is the most fun aspect of your job?
    - What is the worst aspect of your job?
    - What is the strangest or most amusing bug you ever discovered?
    - How many games have you tested and which were the most difficult?
    - How would someone get a job as a video games tester, and what other skills can you bring to the table?
    - What are the most important personal qualities of a good game tester?
    - Where can a career in game testing lead?
    - What does the future hold for Cosmin Burescu?

As someone who has worked as QA tester at AAA studio, I can say a lot has changed in QA from when this video was filmed and uploaded to now.
Game testing was about "Breaking the game" and Now it is as similar to "Game as a software" testing with different testing techniques/principles. Whatever he has mentioned in this video is just referring to "Play Testing" which happens ones Unit & Integration testing is done. But yes a good video for someone who wants to enter the industry, would love to see an updated or a 2022 view point on this.

Yes, sometimes some people don't see a pretty important issue, because they are used to do that mission/area, that is why teams usually change their testing area so a fresh eye can have a look at it from time to time.

      Hey,
I think there might be some freelancing jobs in game testing, that you might be able to do from home, but you will have to search online for it.
If you have any degree and knowledge in programming, you might be able to do that in gaming, so try to find a job in that area, also freelancing in game programming might be available.

I would recommend to see where is the closest gaming studio of any company, and try wither to commute there or to move as close as possible to that studio.

At the beginning, no, but there is a lot of work further one, not just playing and finding bugs.
Documents, statistics, design, plans... and it gets even more and more while you progress in seniority.
It's basically like any development job/field, you start doing the easy part and learning constantly, till you start coming up with your own ideas to implement in your work, train new people, management, and so on..

You already have done the first step, to want to work in this field :)
Next, create your CV, English, with picture and contact methods.
For different companies, just look around on job recruitment websites.

Wish he had started earlier than 21. Well I guess that makes me ancient cause I'm starting in my 30s. Granted I do have two bachelors in four subjects. Front End, Back End, System Admin and IT. Basically I'm a Full Stack Developer monster. Which they are putting me in as Test Associate at minimum wage and no guarantee for growth. Yep fun times.
