Yes, Emperor's Soul. I used that to introduce a friend to Sanderson. I'm not sure he'll ever read the longer tomes, but at least he got to experience part of the Cosmere.
What an amazing job you have done in putting this video together !! 🤗 I'm discovering a lot of potential new favourites in this video, thank you so much ! 🤭
Wow... this video resonated with me a lot. I didn't realize I was in a slump until recently... but it's been almost a 10 year slump, with only Sword of Kaigen and Wise Man's Fear to break it up.
Man, Sword of Kaigen is amazing - so happy you read it! Aaah! Yay for this video working for you! Hopefully it will give you great recommendations to get out of a slump!
The Emperor's Soul is a most excellent choice. The whole concept of being able to craft and shape a soul is something that I had never seen anywhere else. We also learn that objects have souls as well.
Agreeee!!! Don’t you think that the way in which Shai displays her magic can very much be a precursor for Shallan’s? Beyond that, if you haven’t already, please pick up Foundryside! Not the same magic, but it felt similar!
Great video! What a range of genres, I'm definitely bookmarking this for later. Also, let me add another vote for Discworld, it's really great for slumps! Frostheart sounds absolutely amazing, reminds me of How To Train Your Dragon!
Yay! So so happy you enjoyed it!! I also feel I will come back to these recommendations over time! (Although right now all I want to do is read these)! I will start with The Last Cuentista and Frostheart will go next! Care for a buddy read? 🫶
@Fun Fantasy Books I'd love to buddy read Frostheart with you ❣️ Running to buy a physical copy just for the illustrations 🏃♀️ Though if it's fine by you I'd prefer to wait until the second half of the month since I'm in the middle of dense hisfic right now
Some great recommendations. I will add some of them to my TBR for sure. Also will need to check out more booktubers. I was in a really bad reading slump a few years ago and what worked for me: graphic novels. The visual aspect helped me keep my attention on the book, and I could get through them in no time. In my case, it was The Sandman by Neil Gaiman. But other graphic novels would work too. Many popular novels have also been turned into graphic novels, which might be a good way to revisit an old favorite.
Yay! So happy you enjoyed them! I hope this video helps you to avoid any new reading slump! I’ve actually not read many graphic novels! But I’ve heard wonders!
Yes, right there with ya, Mike. When I'm in a slump Dresden is a very reliable remedy. If we're talking single books here, I'd pick The Hobbit - fun, fast-paced, and easy to read.
A couple of books that pulled me out of a reading slump are Margaret Rogerson's An Enchantment of Ravens and Sorcery of Thorns. Both great standalones romance fantasy, first more mystical, cozy autumn fairy vibes and second magical librarian demon hunters. The Enchantment, author's debut, haunts me (in the best way) with its mix of engaging main characters and a world that at some points gave me strong Tainted Grail Avalon/Annihilation vibes 💯
Uuuuhh yeah I can 100% agree that Margaret Rogerson’s standalones are great for reading slumps! Specially Sorcery of Thorns for me (the relationship between Silas & Nathaniel is too precious and funny)! Thank you for sharing your recommendations!! Hopefully it will help other people out!
Personally I recommend The Keepers of the Lost Cities. I was in a reading slump for a LONG long time then I saw this book and gave it try and damn when I say that revived my interest in reading... I was actually happy when I saw that there are 9 total book and heard the author is working on the 10th and final one. Again highly recommend it
Ahh thank you so much for the recommendation! You just discovered a new series for me! Hopefully it also helps other people if they check the comments!
Great video. Weirdly I never got on with the Discworld books. Not sure why. However when I just need to get back in the swing of reading, any of the Red Dwarf books do it for me.
Same!! For some mystical magical reason I’ve never read Discworld before! I am now reading Mort after the recommendations and man I am enjoying it! Thank you for sharing your recommendation! I hope it keeps helping people!!
I agree with your recommendation~ I've reread Emperor's Soul 3 times. I mean after that I go into reading all of the cosmere and others of Sanderson hahahaha
My very first thought was it's gotta be Brandon Sanderson. Great recs otherwise but I'm glad you agree! One recommendation I'd give is to switch up the format and listen to an audiobook! I've been blowing through books again, even sneaking a few non-fiction books in between my normal diet of fantasy/sci-fi books. At first I resisted doing this, but sometimes the reader(s) really add something unique and special to a story, e.g. in The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie, the reader's voice for Inquisitor Glokta is phenomenal. I've also listened to a dramatic recording of Neil Gaiman's The Sandman, which was a really cool way to experience the story.
Ahh what an amazing recommendation! I agree 100% that audiobooks are a great way to get out of a slump! I really enjoyed Glokta! Also the narration of Project Hail Mary I thought it was phenomenal! P.S: I got a bit late to this comment! I am on holidays 🫶!!
I have been on reading slumps multiple times. The current one was when my dad dies in 2021. I lost my appetite in reading and the one book that got me out of the slump was The Home of Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. It is a YA Fantasy book, not too thick and not too thin, and it has an easy-to-understand stupendous writing style both for young and adult bookworms. This is my go-to book, I have re-read it twice and have a plan to re-read it again.
Hiya Dean! Thank you so much for adding your recommendation, I am sure it will help others to get out of their reading slumps (if they decide to navigate the comments!). So sorry about your dad, I can’t imagine the pain- I wish you to find books that bring you joy and happiness 🫶
@@FunFantasyBooks most of the time to get out of a slump I reread something I know I like - rereading The Pearl by John Steinbeck recently was an absolute joy. (Video essay on my channel about it). Have a great day!
In my opinion I feel it depends on the genre someone likes and what elements they want and need in a story. But I like that these amazing booktubers gave recommendations for getting out of a slump. For me I am addicted to being on social media (Just Facebook) and being online in general. Also watching movies and tv shows.

As soon as the video started, I thought about it, and my first thought was what I do when in a reading slump: change genres, as that always works for me. But then I figured you wanted concrete fantasy choices, so I thought of The Emperor's Soul! So great minds think alike! 😎
Thank you for watching! Glad that you enjoyed it! Who’s the author for Snowcrash? Will for sure help others is we can know why you think it could help beat a reading slump!
Haha a very accurate statement! Although there are other recs that are also amazing! (At least I can say this for the ones I’ve read which are Ocean, Black Sun, Legends and Lattes and Acotar)
Ahhh hopefully you keep your good luck with books! Thanks for letting people know that you support Discworld & Dresden Files! I have no excuse now but to read them!
@@FunFantasyBooks I think I have to start with a YA fantasy to get a grip of magical storytelling again with something a bit easier. I'll return to this after i shake off the decades of rust.
@@samkozz hahah I love YA fantasy, so if you let me know what kind of stories you think you’ll like, I can try and help! (Maybe referencing TV series if no other book or tropes comes to mind?)
listening to the audiobook of old favorites always works for me. Hitchhikers Guide read by Douglas Adams himself, or Lotr read by Rob Inglis are my two go-to's
I would assume so! Hopefully the video gave you reading material to get out of a slump! and mayyybe even help you discover other great booktubers? Let me know!
ACOTAR really took me out of a reading slump. Before it, i hadn’t read in like 4 years because nothing felt right. After acotar last year, i ended the year with 32 books read. Some were definitely low quality, but acotar really took me out of the reading slump
I am so very happy to read it! I also started reading again a few years back because of a Sarah J Maas book (in this case Throne of Glass!)! And I definitely agree that ACOTAR is a great book to do that job! Thank you for sharing!
I mostly read series. I do a lot of re-reads in between new series, to kind of help my mind settle before moving on to the next new series. One of my favorite re-reads is - the Raine Benares series, by Lisa Shearin. The writing just flows across the page and takes me along for the ride. Just an all around enjoyable read for me. An Elf girl tries to help a friend, accidentally gets bonded to a cursed rock, and everything goes to hell. Jennifer Estep has several series I really enjoy. The fact they're in the same universe just adds to it, I think. Bigtime, Elemental Assassin, Black Blade. I really like her writing style, and the characters are fun and interesting. Ghost Girl / The Crane Diaries, by Apryl Baker. Foster kid sees ghosts. When she sees her foster sister's ghost, she finally stops ignoring her gift, and uncovers a serial killer. Later discovers she was kidnapped from one of the Main Magical Families, The Cranes, is reunited with her father, and her adventures continue. I've only read through these twice now, but I get sucked in every time. (This author also has other series set in the same universe, and some of those characters make an appearance.) Pretty much anything by Ilona Andrew or C.J. Archer are also fun re-reads that help me get past that slump. The Beginner's Guide to Necromancy, or Black Dog (and spin offs), by Hailey Edwards. October Daye by Seanan McGuire
Wow. Thank you so much for adding different recommendations!! I’m sure other people will find it useful as well! Personally, I am fascinated by the premise of Ghost Girl! Definitely added it to my TBR! Thank you!!
@@FunFantasyBooks Sorry, it's The Ghost Files, rather than Ghost Girl. And I'm not saying it's the best series ever. There are some flaws. The Crane Diaries are much better written, but are a continuation of the first series. The main point, for me, is that it is an interesting story, and one you don't have to think about too deeply - because I tend to get burn out after I've read a book or series that is all engrossing or intense, so can't settle into something else quite yet. Raine Benares, on the other hand, is well written and engrossing. It's the writing that makes it easy to read and fall into. Just a well balanced and enjoyable read. At least in my opinion. Can't recommend Jennifer Estep, or Ilona Andrews enough. Again, these are easier reads - For those times your brain doesn't want to cope with something a lot more in depth or intense, but still want a good story.
Elliot. What are the series of books in your bookshelves 3rd (across), 2nd (down) that form a pattern similar to a globe when put together? Love that design.
A book that got me out of a reading slump is the way underrated The Book of Koli It's amazing sci-fi fantasy about a post apocalyptic world where the protagonist needs to save the last few remnants of humanity by uniting them again to diversify our gene pool - hence making it possible for humanity to survive. It's written in a future grammar English! It takes time to get used to it but it's fun, it has a very captivating storyline and the ending is fully satisfying!
Ahh thank you for the recommendation Phoebe! It sounds really great! Hopefully it helps other people searching for books to get them out of a reading slump!
Nicholas Eames kings of the Wylde broke my slump. Funny fast paced easy to read. Great lore great characters easy writing style and brilliant action. Broke my slump in a matter of days
This video and the whole comments section have so much community spirit, it makes me so happy to see 🤍 Everyone's talking about fantasy and then there's me currently, I've been kind of feeling a reading slump for the past few days (and still am) and my brain could only accept either non-fiction or Pride and Prejudice, no in-between 🤣I'm still not sure if P&P was the cause or remedy of it, but I finished it now and I regret nothing hahah xD
Hahaha Pride and Prejudice is no doubt an amazing read! Ahhh yes! I am so filled with happiness right now! - these amazing booktubers made the effort to film a clip to get us out of any reading slump and I am now obsessed with all of these recs!! (And so honored!)
More realistically I think a book to break you out of your slump just needs to be easy to read. The pacing, flow, etc. is what matters more. It could be a simple book with no real depth or insight at all. Could be pure action with no large overall plot. It doesn't really matter what the book is, just has to be something you'll keep reading while in the slump. Some of these choices just don't seem like slump breakers. If I was in a slump and read some of these descriptions I'd just add the book to a list and forget about it. Some of these are great though. Like they said though, everyone's slump breakers will be different. For instance with the Dresden files it wouldn't matter much if you read the books out of order. Some parts would be confusing and you'd lack background information on certain characters... but each story has a beginning and end. The main focus is still the main character though there's a ton of side characters. There's a lot of books in the series but it's not intimidating like The Wheel of Time. The books aren't that long and each one is a full story.
Absolutely! Each of us might need something different to get out of a slump! Personally for me I need to care about the characters and if there’s some humor and great magic all the better, but also needs to be pretty light! Thank you for supporting the Dresden Files (Mike’s pick!) hopefully this will help others to pick Dresden up!
I read a lot of books (physical) before. Due to my sight i stopped. Now some 20 y later ì decided to start reading again. Bought a e -reaðer but can't reålly find a book to start wiith. I'm not afraid of the classics.
Brilliant video, lots of my favourites! My recommendations would also include Red Dwarf Omnibus by Grant/Naylor. Funny, absurd, easy to read but with thought behind, like Discworld. Legends edited by Robert Silverberg. A bunch of really good fantasy short stories set in the fantasyworld each author have created. A great way to find a author one might have missed. Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. Underground London, filled with absurd and funny characters. 😊
I have just recently started my Discworld journey. Guards! Guards! Was my second book in the series and absolutely this can be your first Pratchett book. I absolutely loved it and as soon as I put it down I ordered the second of the "City Watch" Discworld books.

Yay Hannah!! I am so happy you joined! Thank you so much! I will pick up your rec later this month I believe!!
Amazing collab! Thanks for the recommendation.
PS: I love the drammatic spining from Daniel Greene in 0:17 lol
Hahaha it’s fantastic I laugh out loud the first time that I saw it lol
Great video! What a range of genres, I'm definitely bookmarking this for later. Also, let me add another vote for Discworld, it's really great for slumps!
Frostheart sounds absolutely amazing, reminds me of How To Train Your Dragon!
Yay! So so happy you enjoyed it!! I also feel I will come back to these recommendations over time! (Although right now all I want to do is read these)! I will start with The Last Cuentista and Frostheart will go next! Care for a buddy read? 🫶
@Fun Fantasy Books I'd love to buddy read Frostheart with you ❣️ Running to buy a physical copy just for the illustrations 🏃♀️ Though if it's fine by you I'd prefer to wait until the second half of the month since I'm in the middle of dense hisfic right now
@@laku_u it is totally fine! ❣️- I can wait!! Haha yeah, the book is so gorgeous 🥹
The Sandman is so good.
Yes, right there with ya, Mike. When I'm in a slump Dresden is a very reliable remedy. If we're talking single books here, I'd pick The Hobbit - fun, fast-paced, and easy to read.
A great recommendation! And so happy you agreed with Mike! Thanks for sharing it!
Thank you for putting this together!!
My pleasure! So happy you enjoyed this! Hopefully it’s useful! If not now, maybe to prevent future reading slumps!!
I've never been in a slump but I definitely would recommend Discworld anytime someone is
Ahh lucky you!! Any book you’d like to highlight from Discworld? 👀
This video gave me 6 new channels to follow. Thank you!
Aaah I love to read that! All of these amazing booktubers are different and have something special! So happy you found new ones!
I agree with your recommendation~ I've reread Emperor's Soul 3 times. I mean after that I go into reading all of the cosmere and others of Sanderson hahahaha
Hahaha HOW! Re-reading the Cosmere seems like an incredible feast! 👏! Also so happy you enjoyed the rec!!

As soon as the video started, I thought about it, and my first thought was what I do when in a reading slump: change genres, as that always works for me. But then I figured you wanted concrete fantasy choices, so I thought of The Emperor's Soul! So great minds think alike! 😎

Lol! What a great summary, yes 😂! So humbled these amazing booktubers made time to recommend us books to get out of a slump!
(This author also has other series set in the same universe, and some of those characters make an appearance.)
Pretty much anything by Ilona Andrew or C.J.
@@jelestra gotcha 📝! Yeah, reading something easy when you’re in a slump is also a great tip!
Elliot. What are the series of books in your bookshelves 3rd (across), 2nd (down) that form a pattern similar to a globe when put together? Love that design.
Looks like the Legend series by Marie Lu 🙂
Jo is probably right! I also think it’s the Legend series by Marie Lu!
A book that got me out of a reading slump is the way underrated The Book of Koli
It's amazing sci-fi fantasy about a post apocalyptic world where the protagonist needs to save the last few remnants of humanity by uniting them again to diversify our gene pool - hence making it possible for humanity to survive.
It is such a funny book!
