  • Navigation apps are learning to use your camera to locate you far better than GPS ever could-and give you better directions to wherever you're headed. To test an early version of Google's AR mapping features, WSJ's David Pierce takes an augmented walk in San Francisco. Photo/Video: Emily Prapuolenis

    There should be a mode where you can put your phone in the front pocket of your shirt so it can see what's ahead and then process it and show the information and direction on your smartwatch.....That would be more cool and practical!!

    didn't nokia or microsoft do something similar with Here Maps(?) years ago?

    • @poxer1
      @poxer1 5 років тому +3

      Yes and HERE are still doing it. As far as i know the company is now owned by the german automakers and they are providing the maps systems for them. That is why the maps in audi, mercs and bmw are so good at the moment. AR was implemented in the new A class by Mercedes. AR will be implemented in the new VW ID in the heads up display. So, yeah, nothing new. However, google maps may not be a better technology compared to the one from Here, and the therefore the maps service in the old nokia phones with windows mobile, but it is more popular. That is the reason why this is in the news, according to me. PS. I used to own a nokia with windows phone, and the maps service was better than the one from google, also the UX for most of the services was better than android and apple. Maybe one day we will see android phones with similar big tiles with easy access and very good UX.

    I feel like we're getting more stupid every year. on a normal sunny day(not snowing or raining), most people should be able to look at the google map for 1/2 minute, determine which side is north, and get a good sense of where your destination is, and able to get there 90% through before looking at the app again. However, it seems like simple stuff is getting tougher for us every passing day.

    • @yvonnetomenga5726
      @yvonnetomenga5726 5 років тому

      @Steven Chen - This doesn't work in cities with hi-rise "canyons." However, it might be simpler for Google Maps to add a widget with a compass since Maps already tells you to head, North, etc.

I made my way through Western Europe OK, but struggled in Eastern Europe, North Africa, etc. Anytime you want to get away from the tourist areas, you're unlikely to find someone who speaks your language. And even in the U.S.A., I've traveled to areas where I have a hard time understanding the local accent.🖖

    Google maps is frustratingly horrible 70% of the time I use it. I hate the blue dot 🔵 that doesn’t give you a clear sense of direction and you only start to understand a sense of where you’re going a few blocks down from the point. Even without this AR stuff that won’t be usable for another decade, Google can really improve how their navigation is and copy Waze that gives a much better sense of direction.
