If you haven't already, you should react to a song by a group called Chapel Hart. They wrote a follow up to Jolene that Dolly endorsed when they sang it in front of her on TV. It's called "You Can Have Him, Jolene".

Dolly has said she met a little red headed girl named Jolene and thought the name was pretty, and she combined that with a bank teller who was flirty with her husband at the bank, and after her husband teasing her about the other woman, Dolly said you are spending too much time down at the bank because I know we don't have that much money (in 1973)! She wrote Jolene the same night she wrote I Will Always Love You, that Whitney Houston later famously covered, but Dolly also took to the top of the country charts herself.

The story behind why she wrote I Will Always Love You is interesting too. Some people thought she was in love with Porter Wagoner and she was professing her love for him. Porter says he told Dolly to write the best love song you’ve ever written and she came back with that song. Then Dolly says she wrote it because she had to leave her working relationship with Porter but wanted to express how much she loved their bond and relationship, platonically of course. - kloquewerk

@@Roblockdn Yeah, it's a shame that she had to write a song and sing it on air just to be allowed to leave despite no longer being obligated under contract. Porter was a peice of shit who actually tried to take credit for the writing of the song later in life after it gained world wide success through Whitney Houston. He was a master of using other people to prop himself up.

@@rachelsullivan2926 Porter was a product of his sexist era and had a huge ego for sure. Just the fact that Dolly was referred to as the "girl singer" on the show is proof. I thought what showed Dolly's truly kind nature and character though, Porter fell on hard times, went through a bankruptcy and lost the ownership rights to his songs, and Dolly bought it and gave it back to him. She has said men always underestimated her and thought who is this little blonde with the big boobs and before they knew what hit them, she had everything she wanted because she got her father's business sense.

@@daleb1279 The woman is a true genius with a heart of gold. The fact that she did that for him after everything she was put through on the show is a testament to what an incredible woman she truly is.

In a live version of this, she explains that Jolene was a bank teller and apparently there was a scuffle between Dolly and her, and Dolly went in on her hubby 😂😂

That’s a little exaggerated. I explain the story at the end 😉 - kloquewerk

The video you posted is the only one I’ve seen where she says they got into a scuffle. The other ones I’ve heard is where she says her and her husband would flirt and Dolly just told him to go home. It’s definitely been exaggerated for sure haha. But it’s a fun story either way - kloquewerk
