  • Here's a straight-ahead old time/bluegrass fiddle tune in A, made particularly interesting by the scattering of unexpected minor chords.
In this fiddle lesson I go through the basic melody, using on-screen sheet music, and discuss possible open string drones. I finish off with a bluegrass solo, trying out the major and minor blues scales.

Excellent choice of tune Chris. Well played. I like the A Major Blues improvisation. Must try this. Thank you. 👍

Ya know it’s about time I sit down and learn this one… Hoot Hester used to play it on the Opry and I eventually took up fiddling partly because of Hoot. He died before I got the chance to meet him or thank him for the inspiration. Guess I’ll woodshed this one up this week.

Hi Chris. I finally decided I needed to learn Cherokee Shuffle so thanks for the lesson. I note in bars 23 and 24 you are recommending shifting to third position but at least for me shifting to second position moving from third finger on the A to third finger on the B . It seems to be a quicker and easier shift.
