My mother put it on a cassettetape directly from the TV. Everytime we went on holiday to France we played this in the car. Brings back so many great memories. Cheers from Amsterdam.

I was at this concert, standing right at front centre stage. I don't mind admitting I was in floods of tears watching this amazing man performing this. I was 18 years old and went with my Dad. He went to free Mandela, I went to see Dire Straits :) So to have EC perform with them was amazing. Eric was a last minute replacement as Jack's wife had just had twins and he couldn't make it. What a substitution though. Awesome concert.

bverveen, I relate to you playing Dire Straits in the car. Went to Australia with only one tape, played it over and over as I traveled from Sydney to Brisbane and farther north. Never got tired of hearing Mark, his beautiful deep voice, his expressive guitar solos, and that fabulous band sound. Thanks, and regards from Washington DC.

Saw this live back in 1988 ... Remember how long we all waited for the Dire Straits to finally come on stage and perform their magic together with Eric Clapton. Thanks for posting - brings great memories back!

Every so often a live performance just blows you away. This is one. Sax solo by Chris White is just the best ever in rock. Congrats also to BBC Director who captured this so perfectly. Amazing close-ups and mixing of images. Also think this was one of the first times they used a remote camera-on-crane so extensively, which gave those stunning sweeping left to right and overhead shots used on the sax solo. Bread and butter shots on X-Factor but back then, very very special.

I was quite happy to find this part of their great show in Wembley. Fantastic. The saxophonist is just above everything.

The most remarkable things about the Dire Straits' performance of Romeo and Juliet are that incredible sax and the luxurious way that Mark Knopfler takes all these sounds in and then sings the words in a knock-off kinda way. It never ceases to amaze me....

I was 12 years old when they broadcast this concert live, I remember it was something amazing, the whole concert was like a revelation to me. I recorded some of it on VHS video, and then I put the sound on tape, to play on my walkman - imagine what sound quality :P...But I listened to it over and over again, especially this song, that still gives me the goosebumps! Nice to see it back again, thanks

it's absolutely fantastic: those musicians and artists to honor Mandela. And the song is beautiful. And the saxo's player is just outstanding. Great performance that I saw in London.

To this day, he is still my major influence on guitar. Ever since i was 6 years old all i ever wanted to do was to play like Mark Knopfler. I still remember listening to the Live 86' Australian Live Sydney "Sultans of Swing"... that solo blew me away and i stayed up late into the wee hours of the morning listening to it over and over on my parents old headphone set with the tape until it died.

This BROTHERSI N ARMS MANDELA is the very best version of this song ever. Just as Sultans of Swing at Live Aid was a defining moment for these wonderful musicians with the sax, this took them to a new level in my opinion. I've listened to many versions of this song and seen them live 4 times but when i listen to the passion in that solo tears stream down my eyes.

simply amazing ive heard every single version of this song and even seen it live it doesnt matter how many time i hear it it still make me wanna cry and im a 27yr old grown man for gods sake and u can see the look on mk's face when he plays the last solo u know he wrote this song on a broken heart and that this song is his soul and u know hes the best cause he was never after the fame he plays cause its who he is the last of the great guitarist they just dont make music like that anymore

I had it on VHS, too, until my father borrowed it to let his girlfriend watch ... and she made off with it when they broke up. If I ever see her again, I shall claw her eyes out, because it was my only video copy of this absolutely amazing performance.
Bloody gorgeous saxophone solo. Performances like this are why I love live music, feedback and all.

Eric Clapton only played because the guitarist's wife was in hospital having twins! I remember that clearly as do I remember every note the saxophonist played. Today is the first time I've heard it since the original concert. Uploader, Sir..I salute you!

the correct lyric is: "There's a Place For Us, like in the movie song ..."
This line is a reference to the song in "West Side Story" (a modern day Romeo & Juliet story) sung by Maria (Natalie Wood) while sitting on the fire escape.
