- Like everyone who takes a trip to Boston, I did nothing but eat roast beef sandwiches. Once I learned about the legendary North Shore beef sandwiches I couldn't resist trying as many as I could stuff down. Let's find out who was the best!

Kelly's sucks. There used to be "Riley's" who had a bunch of locations...family owned. They decided to cut back then get out all together. They were BY FAR the best. CJ's Northside Grill in Framingham serves exact sandwich and krinkle cut fries!!

Man this video brings back memories. I loved the week I spent in Boston in 2001. I have loved Arby's since I was a kid. Our Grandma Pezzi used to get us bags of Beef N Cheddars as a special treat. I'd get bags of the Classic Roast Beef when they were 5/$5. I'd even eat them cold out of the fridge. After my week in Boston in which I must have eaten over a dozen Roast Beef sandwiches, I bought Arby's shortly after I got back. I didn't eat Arby's again for another 10 years. It wasn't even close. Jamie's wasn't around when I was there and my friend moved after 9-11, but Jamie's make Boston sound like a good vacation trip. I went back to Arby's simply because outside of Hardee's Roast Beef sandwich, not many places here in Milwaukee do it and none I can find do it like Boston. I love pizza but would definitely go more for the Roast Beef. I'm just not a thin pizza guy. When I was in New York, yeah the pizza was good, but it was thin. I like a good hand-tossed or Detroit-Style. It was great hearing the real joy in your voice being with your friends and the peace on your face walking in the wooded trail.
Yknow what, I will have to try the Hardee's roast beef sandwich. Forgot that was even a thing.

Growing up a short bike ride from the original Kelly’s on Revere beach that was the gold standard for north shore roast beef. That being said Nikos is mind blowing! When I get back to Mass I am always looking for an excuse to head up to Salisbury beach and lunch at Nikos.

great insight on the North Shore Roast Beef! how does it compare to a Beef on Weck? I went to a Bills game (from California) back in 2018 and fell in love with that sandwich when i was in Buffalo (i know you're from that area so no doubt you know a Beef on Weck)
These blow away a beef on weck. THAT SAID, a beef on weck really is the most comparable thing you're gonna find to these, save for that weird kimmelweck roll. I can get that here in Charlotte, but not these. Plus the whole super thinly sliced beef thing doesn't make its way to the beef on weck.

Boston is a terrific old world European flair city with modern upgrades and appeal. The food offerings are world class.

Having had the original sandwich from Kelly's at Revere beach beginng in the late 50's continuing through today. None of todays sandwiches compare to those and 3 way wasn't a thing in those days. Jamie's is ok but not even in my top 5. To get the real deal it has to be hunted and it's always a small Mom-Pop shop. I go back quite a few times a year and always get my sandwiches from the same places each time. Sometimes change isn't good and these sandwiches are an example of that. I now make my own here in upstate NY. I do a short smoking of the seasoned roast and then sous vide it at 125 for 22 to 24 hours. After cooling a bit I slice it thin but not shaved. Last week I did 6 lbs of beef invited the family over and they ate it all. This time I tried kimmelwick buns, I'll be using those again. Enjoyed the video now you have to go back and try the whole belly fried clams and fried scallops for a real treat. 😊

Did not occur to me that the first 2 sandwiches were hot. For me, roast beef is the only type that I prefer cold. Great editing, btw! Nice change of pace.

If you video log hope it is okay if I do multiple comments - first thought when I saw that Skampa roast beef sammy was "that ain't arby's". Looked great!
As a native Bostonian, I don't consider Kelly's Roast Beef part of the "North Shore Beef" world. No onion roll, and they skimped on the James River sauce. You actually seem to have gotten some decent rare roast beef in your sandwich there, but most days, it's not rare, it's more well done and it doesn't compare to other places out there. Also, I'm not a fan of the "3 way" as the mayo doesn't mix well with the James River BBQ sauce. Separately, they are awesome...but together, I've never liked the combo. Sadly, I am not local anymore and have not been home since 2021, so I haven't tried a lot of the newer competitors for the North Shore Beef. I look forward to trying them in 2025.
I’ve had a couple more trips since. Had some beefs that blew all these out of the water, Modern Butcher is absolutely outstanding. Also had the worst beef ever at the airport Kelly’s. Still better than Arby’s though 😂
@@PapiEats Arby's is rubbish. Try Blue house in Salem NH next time you are here, just over the border. Their super makes the rest look small.

The Beef game has really raised the bar, there are 8-9 places on the N.Shore that are all amazing. Such subtle differences. Modern Butcher-Danvers is the top dog. Londis, Atha's, Bellas's Pete's, Zeno's, Tessi's, Anthony's to name a few are all excellent.
Zeno's: love a sammy that is falling apart. Ranking: I knew you would pick Jamie's based on watching your reaction to them all :-) In terms of "can't them anywhere" - I wonder about NYC, maybe they have a contender?
I'm sure there are some hipster spots in NYC serving these. There has to be at least one.

Some killer beef spots all the way Northcoast Massachusetts like Niko's and Route 110. Would highly recommend those spots to any tourists or travelers driving on I 95. Always thought Kelly's was a little over rated. (Route 110 got my favorite fries)
Im from Oregon, on a long ass road trip (22 months now) where New Haven was kinda our final destination. We make our own sourdough pizza at home so wanted to be educated on a different style. Let me tell you ...there is NOTHING like Sallys pizza. Anywhere else. We tried almost every apizza place we came across....pepes, modern, whoever else, doesnt even compare. The crispness, the char, the juicy tomato sauce with lovely cooked cheese....it is *special* highly recommend you try it
DeLucia in Rariton NJ was also very special. They call that one a tomato pie though.
Absolutely loved it, crisp crust, nice char flavor also, but a drier dough so it ends up slightly more crackery. But my favorite part was that the cheese was very cooked and that caused the fat to separate and coat the entire pizza and almost make it taste like it was drizzled with butter 🤤
I grew up eating Roast Beef sandwiches at the original Kelly’s on Revere Beach. Now residing on Cape Cod, home of Timmy’s Roast Beef in West Yarmouth. THE best beef South of Boston!
That pizza you had was not even one little bit a NH style. New Haven Apizz is found in New Haven.

My man, I can’t believe you came all the way to Boston for a Roast Beef (which for what you were looking for is traditionally a “North Shore Beef”) and didn’t go thru Beverly, MA and visit “Nick’s Roast Beef” which is one of the top beefs around. Next time…
I came back this year and was told not to bother with that one, ended up at Modern Butcher. That was unbeatable.

The second roast beef sandwich that you ate from Kelly's look like the bread was hard as a brick bat...lol. Also call me weird but I seem to like the tasty jellified roast beef from Arby's better than actual real roast beef😁
Someone hasn't had a Boston beef
There are easily 25 places that are better than Kelly's as far as beef goes. Its just not as good. They cut the beef a little thicker - the roll is too chewy - they dont load up the beef like the others. Billy's in Melrose/Wakefield is the best beef on the north shore.

As a Bostonian and big fan of beefs I think the places you chose and the rankings were pretty much right on point. Gotta try Kelly's, but it's not the best. Jamie's for sure is. It was cool you checked out a couple less traditional spots like hotbox and cusser's, and couple solid but less famous hole-in-the-walls like Zeno's (the only one I haven't tried) and Skampa. Skampa is for sure the best one not really on the north shore, it's where I usually go when I don't feel like driving north. I'm not a huge fan of cusser's, but otherwise you ranked them just the way I would have.

Atha's in Peabody and Tessi's and Tewksbury are two of my favorites. I would actually recommend getting jr. beefs, not supers there because they are still ENORMOUS at both places and supers will throw of the beef to cheese/mayo/sauce ratio imo. Also I've heard Modern Butcher in Danvers does arguably the best around but they only do them on certain days and there's always a line. I haven't made the pilgrimage yet. If you're looking for another classic like Kelly's, Nick's roast beef (several locations) has been in the game for years and is probably worth the experience. And closer to Boston is Mike's in Everett (by the encore casino) which can be polarizing but it's also an old school classic (i personally think it is very good). @@PapiEats There used to be a fast, food roast beef chain “Roy Rogers” that served real roast beef sandwiches. Remnants, a couple of stores, of that hundreds of store chain still exist under private ownership. Yet Arby’s continues to prosper with 3,500+ locations. Go figure.
