*Scott Halpin on drums.
Imagine Scott Halpin talking to his buddies the next day, "Dude! I saw The Who at the Cow Palace and Kieth Moon passed out and they asked me to play the drums during the encore!" And of course his friends, "Yeah, right dude!"
"Yeah right bro, it's not even on UA-cam..." 😂😂😂😂 remember when I first saw this footage. Spine tingling
Scott Halpin was in the right place at the right time living the dream of all of us, besides being up to the task.
The Who rocks !!
I was there with a bunch of my friends. 16 years old. Waited all night in line to get tickets, then got to the Cow Palace the night before to wait in line so we'd get up close to the stage. Light rain, that night. Drinking schnapps (warming). Doors finally opened, ran like Banshees to the stage. Found a spot about 10 feet back from the front, directly in front of Pete. Synyrd was AWESOME. An entirely unknown band, at the time. Finished with "Free Bird," of course. Blew us all away! I was learning bass at the time, and immediately copied the bass line to Working for MCA, as soon as I got home. VERY memorable songs. You can see the back of my long-haired head at one point in the original version of this video, near the end. Second time I'd seen The Who. First time was 12/13/71 at the SF Civic, at age 14, when the band was touring Who's Next (a famous show, recorded for an album, released as a bootleg and then officially, years later). THAT show was life-changing (chest pressed against the stage, on Pete's side, again). This one was just a party with friends. Entwistle held things down just fine without Keith. Surprising, but absolutely true. Several very, very loud Sunn Collesium amps. I owned one, years later. Could never turn it up past 4 (too loud for any band I ever played with). Entwistle was the GOAT, for sure. I watched him carefully, and stole some of his trademark licks, directly from this show (octaves, runs on minor thirds). This whole band at this particular time was the best live band ever, for sure. Scott played only a few numbers, jams that weren't really that impressive. A let-down, frankly. We were all kinda pissed that Moon wasn't there, by that time, but the whole "kid from the audience" thing was pretty cool. I still have the original "Owl" poster ("Hoo, hoo" ... get it?) from this show, framed, in my office. Looking at it right now. Currently worth north of $5k, on eBay, I believe. We humans just don't make music like this, anymore.
I was right there with you. I was also 16 at the time. I was right next to where Roger threw the tambourine. I was aware of Lynyrd Skynyrd and was in a band that still did covers and we had already learned Free Bird. It was great because often when we played it nobody had yet heard it.
Skynyrd was great that night. Actually even with Moonie crashing those two, times… I liked the “Is there a drummer out there thing” too. The guy (Scott) did the Bay Area proud. The only thing that really sucked was all those long delays that night. But still… one for the history books.
I was at the Civic in 71 as well… living in the city was pretty cool sometimes.
Enjoy the memories… Cheers👍🏼
Make that 3 of us! I was on Pete’s side of the stage, pretty close. Also at the 71’ SF Civic show Tuesday the 12th which was just released as part of the Lifehouse box set 🎸🎼🎸!
Well… I knew a few of us were there…! I still remember them as great nights! By and by, How is that box ser? @@jr4ster
@@vikingar I have only listened to the SF Civic set here on UA-cam

I thought it was great! Nice stereo sound on headphones.
So Scott wasn't that impressive, eh? Well, think about being pulled cold from the audience, asked to fill the shoes of someone famous and great, in front of an audience that will criticize every beat you make. Even if he played those songs at home everyday on drums, this would be a lot to ask. This isn't TV or the movies where the kid from the audience is instantly as good or better than the professional he is filling in for. Just think, Artimus Pyle was asked and refused to fill in. Those were huge shoes to fill.
The fact that Scott Halpin was able to pull this off at all is more than impressive.
Bringing in a drummer from the audience was a brilliant idea, even if they didn't pull it off. Instead, Scott did great. I imagine it was sheer terror at first, exhilaration, followed by the sheer joy of clicking with the Who.
And the Lord said, "give them bass"!
amen brother
atta boy Scot Halpin,
В конце выступления аж мурашки по коже пробежали! Привет из Сибири!
i cant even imagine how scott was feeling, my god the butterflies, and to go cold on stage with one of the greatest rock bands ever, a life changing experience can you imagine him talking to his kids and even grandkids about this wow just wow nice fill scott halpin hats off you are in rocks elite status
I was there!
I was a junior in high school . My friend scored a couple of tickets to this show through his connection to Ticket Master.
We went the day before and camped out under the tarp that was thrown over the cattle gates at the entrance.
I had never heard of Lynyrd Skynyrd, I thought to myself, I hope they hurry through their set so the Who can start playing.
After Skynyrd played their first tune I was not impressed with Ronnie’s singing, still hoping they would hurry up!
Then came Free Bird! BLEW MY EVER LOVIN MIND!!!! Through the years I had the privilege of seeing Skynyrd many times before the crash that changed everything.
The Cowpalace sound setup was fantastic, really brought out the Quadrophenia sound, I was unable to hear very well for almost two days after the show.
LOUD does not even come close to describing it. I loved it!!
When Towsend started asking it there was anybody in the audience that could play the drums ,I thought he was joking!
Very brave to get up there and fill in for Moon! Kudos to Scott !!!
Although I only was able to see the Who once, I will always remember this show!!
The greatest band ever!
I just cannot agree with you on that! - I'm now Peter age 73 in 2023
lmao they cranked John's bass up so much in this show that it almost manages to cover Keith's absence in the overall sound
¡Así es!
Shepherd's Chapel Network !!!!!!! Pastor Murray is an Anointed Servant of GOD who teaches the Word of GOD with Authority!!!!!!!
Love how Townsend has every Les Paul he owns on stage.
Haha. They were numbered 1-9 because they of all the different tunings he used.
John had a huge sound
Nobody is close
Heaven and Hell is just so essential
Every great live show of theirs started with Heaven and Hell!
Lemmy said he wanted to be like john but he knew no one could be close and look how loud he is john is extremely underrated
@@thecolourrose9022 I don't know about underrated, Entwistle is widely regarded as the best bass player in rock history. He was outshone onstage by the other members of The Who though, they were animals while he stood a still.
opening night of North America Quadrophenia Fallout Shelter tour, Lynyrd Skynyrd opened and were well received, LS first major appearance anywhere, we had no idea who LS was
1:07:01 Pete notices Keith has checked out. Laughs and keeps playing.
Scott Halpin lived the dream
Thank You Lord for a time such as this & YES, Thank You Scott For Your Skill, Having Played For The World's Most Talented Group, Band, Of The 20th Century, The WHO ! ! !
That Scott doing Cowbell on Magic Bus? It’s the kind of song a beginner could do but Scott had the balls to go up there and play a name that will live on forever in history. Actually it kinda looks like Moon. But then everyone pretty much looked like Moon back then. The face of the guy on Magic Bus is Moon I think now I’ve seen different angles of it 😊
Listening to Daultry's autobiography and he describes this gig in full detail. Keith was paralyzed from the neck down for a few days, but loved that everyone had to push him around in a wheelchair. He was smiling the whole time. The band could tell that the wheels were coming off on Keith the whole show, but John was up so loud that they thought no one else would notice... until Keith collapsed, that is. Keith used to get such bad nerves before a gig that he would throw up for hours. He really had an intense phobia about going out onstage and that is what drove him to do the drugs in this instance (every other instance was because he was a junky).
I was there, first time I saw the Who. So kind of a strange concert!
To say the least! 😅
Oh man it's so good to see a live version of most of Quadrophenia from this time period, it needs a audio overhaul Keith's drums are way to quiet and yes John's bass thunders through and I love that, big shout to Scott aswell (for temporarily filling Keith's shoes) and thanks for posting.👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Entwistle should always be that high in the Mix. Shame about Moon’s 🎙
@@christinecollins6648 I can't argue with that 😊
One of the best days of my life..............
Roger is always healthy energetic and enthusiastic...never saw a bad show from him.
Thank You, So much pal, for putting this on YT. Best quality version of this concert I've ever seen!
What a treat. They sounded amazing as a quartet with a change of personnel as as a trio. This was a band at its peak. This is way better than their "R'n'R Circus" performance which is amazing in itself.
¡Qué emoción el final!...
¡Algo espectacular!...
¡Me saca lágrimas!...
¡Y, por supuesto, subieron el volumen de los otros instrumentos, del bajo, sobre todo, que terminó opacando la batería, pero, está bien, salió muy bello!
1:31:17 Pete, dirigiendo a Scott... ¡Qué hermoso!
¡Increíble, en todo caso, la esencia de keith y su importancia en la banda!...
1:07:01 PT realised that Moon collapsed !!!
JAE lead bass from the beginning !!
Quadrophenia is such a great album.
Great version live The Punk and the goodfather
Nice to see john has a camera
The Ox on bass
By 72/73 The who had peaked after Quadrophenia...we used to wear that almumn out...Moon was still Moon, but he lost some of that energergetic "snap" in his playing..still was great live though through 75/76...but, sadly, in decline...still adored him though all the way until the sad end.
So true. I was at this concert as well as 1976 at Winterland.
I recently saw a video of the band in 78. Moon looked horrible, bloated face and pale. He passed about 4 months after that show. Sad.
I wish a talented fan could sync this video to the soundboard from Philly on 12/4/73.. at least up to the part where Keith passes out. That would be just awesome !!!
great video.
They might have had an easier time of it on this tour had THE WHO taken Pete's advise and brought at least keyboard player on the road with them. Roger vetoed that idea, saying The Who is a 4 piece band.
Still a pretty good performance, even with Keith being out of it until he was completely out of it. He survived the bulk of the show strictly on Muscle Memory.
Such a waste too
Pete and John are in the peak of their powers here.. would've absolutely been a premier Quad show for the right reasons had Keith been OK throughout
Great to see more live full Quad on YT.
John had that same Halloween costume on for 2 straight years of concerts...wow
Those leather jackets are still made by Vanson motorcycle gear.

Thank you very much for posting this.
This is like a bass isolation video - I will take it because Entwistle’s the GOAT. But, I am ready to wager that this wasn’t an oddity of where the camera’s pick ups were- this represents how much louder John’s amps were then everyone else, if you pumped it up to hear Pete and Keith it would be deafening like it most likely was in person ( this is from what I have read and experienced)
The day Keith Moon became fucking astonishing… by passing out on fucking stage!! 😮
Fantastic show but unfortunately the audio is loud and distorted on my end but still thanks for the upload it was a strange day in music history that turned out to be pretty cool!!!
No Keith Moon no WHO Period. RIP dear boy see u on the other side lovey. 💋💋💋🔥🔥🔥♥️♥️♥️
Skynyrd opened for The Who in '73. Does anybody know if it was filmed as well?
Bravo!
48:55 PT angry at Keith ??
Pete knew Keith was a bit fucked up.
That look. Yer nicked, mate.
@Edward Didgeridoo Catflap priggish notion- Moon brought that song to life. Shame about the drug collapse, keith was brilliant in this period as was Ox
Say what you want about Keith… but that was one tough son of a bitch! He made it that far into the show on a stew of pills and alcohol! The average human would not have held up lol
But hearing just Pete and John playing together was a treat! I see what Pete meant how it sounded great when the only things with strings were played by him and John…. it sounds fucking great!
Where The Who the first Rock Band to use Backing Tapes? Whenever Keith Moon is wearing Headphones!
No. They were not .
Scott did a great job!
1:08:28 Pete bangs the gong in an attempt to wake Keith
It's kind of strange why they don't show why they brought a a guy from the audience to finish the concert after the second time Keith moon passed out. I have seen it.he was seriously fucked up
Having the drummer collapse during the first stop of a major tour is never a good sign.
48:56 Check out the death stare from Pete! He knows Moonie is off his arse.
Scot Halpin rip
Actually a great show despite Keith passing out on tranquilizers
1:20:33 keith moon collapse
Thank you so much for posting all of these great shows Hellion! Any chance you could put the word "VIDEO" in the title of the videos that are actually videos (as opposed to audios)?
he made it through the show nearly
1:20:33 Moon has left the building
America couldn't manage color film stock by 1973?
Who filmed this and why,? I mean I’m glad they did I’m just wondering
We may never know.
Bill Graham Presents had a an "in-house" video system that was used at the Winterland from late 1973 until the last shows in 1978. I assume that this system was carted over to the Cow Palace for The Who show. The idea of the video screen was to give fans with a "bad seat" a better view of the band. A lot of the W
interland shows are available on the UA-cam channel Music Vault.
@@32powerof3 cool! Thanks for letting me know. So that’s why it looks so similar to the rush concert on music vault! Bill graham did some pretty cool stuff I gotta say.
Does anyone know why Artimus Pyle didn’t fill in?
Won't Get Fooled Again [moonie passes out]
where is substitute
theres another copy where the sound is better i swear
I love The Who but they can be so anal retentive, sometimes. At shows like the Concert for New York or Live Aid, they always played their standards, while bands like The Rolling Stones did different things to fit the respective occasions. Why couldn't The Who alter their encores a bit and play light, melodic songs that didn't require drums? They had plenty to choose from, on their early albums. Love Ain't for Keeping, Happy Jack, most of Sell Out and even songs like Tommy Can You Hear Me or Sensation could have easily been played, without drums. Improvise a bit, Pete and be in the moment. It's never too late.
I love live Who but admit I'm spoiled. Can't listen to this lousy audio
BTW I'm an old fucker
I'm a old fucker aswell mate and I just rolled with it, after sometime I kinda got used to the poor audio.
This is actually incredible compared to the generated version circulating in the 1990s. I had a copy that was so blurry and the sound was unlistenable. I hated it despite the historic nature of the video. For the first time I understand every single song and the video is decent. I love UA-cam for having this on it! ❤
What a messed gig. Keith doesn't even play Won't Get Fooled Again; passes out during Magic Bus; Pete, Rog & John don't even look back as two roadies have to haul him off the stage. They just start the next song as if it's a regular occurrence. Then is replaced by some worm in the crowd for a song no one's ever heard before, 'Spoonful'?? Odd, odd, odd...
Spoonful was a pretty well known song in many circles. Maybe not yours. The WHO kept playing or they would have to cancel. Resulting in a huge fine and refunds. They did what they had to do. SH* T happens .
@@jimfritz2087 Stumped me on this one. It's an old Willie Dixon tune. Don't believe the Who ever recorded it. Cream did. But you're the music expert, I'm sure you knew that already. Huge fine?? They were on top of the world in the early 70's, I really doubt they cared about that.
