  • This beautiful Gauge '3' model of a Great Western 4-6-0 Grange class number 6850 'Cleve Grange', was constructed in the mid 1970's by it's owners grand-father. It is seen hauling a short rake of the Garden Railway host's home-built BR Mark I coaches.
Also seen is my professionally-built Manning Wardle class 'L 0-6-0T battery powered locomotive. I had it named after my late father; it is hauling a Great Western 'B' set, a coach rake consisting of two non-corridor brake composites.
Unfortunately, the weather on the day was dull and overcast, and started to rain soon after this filming session.

Is it wood that the track is laid on top of in parts of the layout? It doesn't seem to be felt covered so what's the protection treatment?

It's marine ply regularly coated with creosote substitute (creosote is no longer available because of its toxicity). The line has been going for many years now with only minor repairs.

Presumably this locomotive is an LBSC designed 'Purley Grange'. As drawn the locomotive was a 2 1/2" gauge design and would present difficulty when encountering gauge 3 pointwork due to incompatible wheel standards. I would there fore assume that were this the LBSC design that its builder altered it slightly to make it compatible with gauge 3 standards. Is it the case that its builder is no longer extant? As I have some of the castings to make one of these and would like to run it on gauge 3 I am interested to speak to anyone who has built one. The few in existence however seem to have been built beyond living memory.

The builder (who is very much still with us!) tested all his locomotives on his Gauge 3 garden line as construction progressed, so any needed modifications were incorporated along the way. If you make a request on the Gauge 3 Society web site for contact, several members would be happy to help.
