Aaron from the 1st example here, thank you for the feedback Bobby! This was just a quick demo to get a new song idea down. I bounced the drums to a stereo track and used Reaper's Horizon Clipper/Limiter. When I revisit this track for a proper demo I will bounce each drum part to a track and mix them more carefully using your suggestions. Thanks for always putting out killer content!
I have been using your custom impulse now for a while and it really truly is one of the better ones out there. I really like the Catharsis responses and yours is right there with those. Love your videos and tips.
Hey Bobby thanks for taking the time reviewing my song ! I was super excited to see my name there ! I love your work and I'm really grateful for all the knowledge you're sharing ! I already have a limiter on my snare and on my drum buss. However, I do clip my mix a lot though, I tried matching the loudness (LUFS) of a reference song I like. I ended up with a lot of limiting and I probably did too much. I tried lowering the LUFS of the track and lowering the snare volume as well and it really helps ! Again, I really appreciate all of your work and big thanks !!
Thanks Bobby, this is Sean from the last mix. The guitars in that were an AC 30 micd up in an isolation box. I will def mess around with sims and IRs to see if I can get a better result. Thanks again!
hey, Bobby, I`ve been trying to record some proggy stuff with big chords on hi gain, but can`t get note separation, it becomes just a big mess. Do you think I need some specific impulses or anything? I googled this, seems many people have that issue and therefore don`t do complex chords at all. They suggest to keep the gain not too high and use tubescreamer (I use plugins), that`s what I do already, but it`s still not working. Of course strings are fresh and pickups are good, and I`m satisfied with my basic guitar riffing sound
@@rockboy360 well I`m not going to swap pickups so far, I use Lace sensor alumitone and they say it`s articulated enough, not Fishman level but close. Fishmans are rare and too expensive where I live. Lace isn`t cheap as well though. I previously had a guitar with Dimarzio Petrucci signature and it was even bigger mess than now
@@insertanynameyouwant5311 Pickups are kinda overrated. You can use some pre EQ to get rid of some mud, boost some uper mids, cut/low shelf some low frequencies to prevent fartiness and so on to make them sound better for your taste. Tubescreamer makes things sound tighter because it has filters. Try maybe Dr Drive from Audiority. It's free emulation of Precision drive pedal which is modified TS. It has higher volume output than TS and Attack knob to make your pickups sound tighter. Most of the time problem is amp. Try to find some that can have lots of distortion and sound clear at the same time. Maybe some Dual Rectifier emulation even though I'm not biggest fan of the sound. I use CB4 (Diezel VH4 emulation) from ML Sound Lab on channel 4 and I think you can tweak it to sound nasty and clear at the same time. Try whatever amp you can find and I think you will find something that you will like.:) And just one unpopular thing. Sometimes problem is with guitat setup. Intonation is not set correctly for your playing/fretting and can sometimes sound like a mess. Hope it helps at least little bit.:)
@@urbicz707 a little bit maybe lol as for pickups I totally agree, I replaced them because stock ones were very meh, noisy and not enough los/highs. And when I replace things, I just can`t install something noname. Will definitely try that Audiority thing! Everything else seems checked. I like Engl ampsims but impulses mostly of Mesa setup, because I haven`t heard good Engl impulses. CB4 was fun, I tested it with some powerchords but otherwise it`s not there.
@@insertanynameyouwant5311 CB4 was only ampsim (and even gear) that I fell instanly in love.:D Sometimes I play open chords just for fun with distortion and they sound still good so that's why I mentioned it, but preferences and taste is subjective thing and that's absolutly fine.:) In my case I never was big Engl fan but I think real E530 sounded good, but that's ages ago and memory blurs overtime.:D I don't know how much progy they can sound but if you really like the sound maybe you should adapt to it and no other way around.:D But I don't think that any IR (except for shitty ones) can make some significant difference. IRs are more like a EQ than some magic sound absolutly changing thing. It can make it sound less muffled and more bassy, add more bite or whatever, but character of the amp is still there and if the notes are one over the other that is more of a result of saturation and compression of the distorted channel than bad speaker and micing. But I didn' heard your sound so maybe I'm wrong. I use IRs made in MIKKO. It wasn't cheap so I pushed myself to make some decent sounding.:D But I have IR packs from Kristian Kohle (EMINENCE DV77 pack, Rainbows and Chainsaws pack) and they are pretty good, lots of variety. Maybe you'll end up with recording more takes and blending clean (DI/clean channel tone or some little bit crunch) sounding guitar with distorted one. But I know It's more fun to have that sound right away when you're just messing around.:D
Bobby I've been using your IR pack for a while and I love them! have you ever thought of making more packs with other cabs? i would definitely buy a pack of yours made with a marshall cab
I love your IR for the Mesa cabinet! I notice compared to other IR's I have collected it seems like they are lower in volume though. I just compensate with more volume or gain if needed. I've noticed that across a bunch of different creators' impulse responses sometimes have different levels of volume or maybe perceived volume? What contributes to this? P.S. What band is Aiden from? That mix sounds sick. Love that brutality!
Am i missing something with the NadIR stock IRs? It seems nobody uses it and from all i have tested, including some Ownhammer and York audio, they were among my favourites. Is it something wrong with them?
hey Bobby I paid the mix crypt for a few months and couldn't continue supporting the program anymore but I was under the impression that I would always keep the old videos to reference but I can't access it at all anymore. was I wrong to assume I'd keep access to the old videos I'd paid for?
I'd just like to clear up any confusion. The Frightbox Mix Crypt is a subscription service (sort of like Netflix). Members have full access to everything for as long as they're a subscriber. Once someone unsubscribes, they lose access to the material. This is standard for most subscription services. The upside is that anyone who subscribes has access to everything that has ever been uploaded to the Crypt. For example, if you were to resubscribe when it reopens, you'll have access to all of the material that was uploaded while you were gone. Hope that clears up any confusion!
@@FrightboxRecording yeah no worries just checking! thanks Bobby you're a real help! haven't had time for music lately but watching your uploads always keeps me with tabs in my head about ideas or new tricks to try out. thanks for everything I wish I found you years ago!

Yes if you don't know by now that impulse responses is roughly 75% of the tone then you are living in a hole. I only use Bogren, Kristian Kohle, some Ownhammer, and Mendel IR's unless I am using mikko, GGD Cabs, or Softube Celesion Cab Shaper. The rest totally suck IMO. At the end of the day, this stuff is not rocket science.
The key difference is passing on knowledge, teaching what you know so that future generations can learn and develop that knowledge even further. The answer to a question is only easy if you know what the answer is. Go back to your own hole and let quality teach, you might actually learn how to mix metal better, god knows you need the help.
