Hi Mikko, I’ve just purchased your ‘brushes for painter’ bundle! Which one you use most for your painting? and thank you so much for educating us for free ❤
I cycle through them based on what’s the most fitting one for the painting I’m working on. A lot of people have told me they like Bear-brush the most. I have to say that it’s one of my favourites too. Blueberry also always gets me in the mood to paint something but I’ve done dozens of paintings with all of them. There’s not a single brush I would delete from the set. When I started working on that set I started from 30 brushes and I worked on them until I was finally able to squeeze all the features into 10 brushes. It took 2 years but there’s no fluff in that set at all. I recommend using one brush for a whole painting before switching them so you can get a muscle memory on the controls. Almost all have features to mix or blend colours by using the stylus lightly at an angle so I recommend trying that with each one.
I clicked on this video while trying to get information on the best brushes to use for reproducible line art with the least pixelation, but I couldn't stop watching & listening. I can't get over how incredible you are, not only your amazing art but your storytelling. Thank you so very much for this video and for all of the other videos you offer to us! You definitely have me hooked! I am enjoying early retirement from teaching first graders for the last 26 years & have been getting into singing on an app with people all over the world and decided, "Why not start learning about digital art?" Needless to say, I am very much a novice, and I know I will learn a lot from you. 🤩 Thank you, Mikko!! 🙏🙏 LOVE your pumpkin sanctuary, by the way!! 🥰
Pixellation has nothing to do with the brush selection. It’s your canvas size being too small. When painting for print set the dpi to at least 300 and for the pixel size you can change the unit from pixels to the cm or inches of the target size of your print. We’re all learning when it comes to creativity. Don’t be afraid of the technical aspect of digital art because that’s only 0.0001% of learning digital art just the same way learning photography is only 0.0001% about how the camera buttons work. All of the technical stuff is well documented in Procreate user manual if you ever run into a technical problem. It’s even searchable ☝️ Thank you for the kind comment and good luck on your new journey 🐻💕
@@angrymikko Thank you for the quick response & for the help & guidance 🙏 I had no idea that the brush selection does not affect the pixelation. And thank you very much for the wish of good luck! 😊
@@angrymikko that is one of the most thoughtful, well thought out informative responses I have ever seen any creator, give a person! If I wasn’t already impressed before (hint hint, I was😊) then I certainly am now. At the artist and the leader. Just for any other people reading, THIS is what s truly self confident person looks like👍 We should always be confident to share our knowledge with anyone who has a desire to learn🎉
This makes me want to try and lean how to use procreate again! Thank you!! Your art is so nice and your advice is motivating, I’m not quite sure how to explain it
It’s a super simple app. All you need to know is opacity and brush size which are on the left side of the screen that’s it really. Art however, is a lifelong learning experience but it makes any life an enhanced life :)
This video was so helpful. You always have a video to answer the specific questions and problems I’m facing. I’ve loved using the brushes I’ve bought off your store, but I couldn’t figure out why I was getting a blurry look. Turns out I didn’t use a hard brush for the start so I just went right in to the colors/shading/highlights and texture.
If you’re using my brushes pay attention to the angle of your stylus. The most tilted angles produce softer marks meant for blending and finding colours but the normal position turns brush strokes into sharper high opacity marks.
Loved watching this live. The art work turned out amazing mikko. Been waiting for the next live. Love that you put so much effort in your content. Thank you.
It was a wild livestream because I came in with my own dumb plans on what I wanted to do but my creativity was having none of it and I’m glad I went with it’s idea instead because this is way better than what I would have done ☝️Sometimes letting go of the wheel is the best that I can do the get the art done the way it wants to be done.
Thank you 🐻 also thanks for taking the time to comment on this video. I don’t mention it enough in my videos but it really helps my videos reach a wider audience because of the way yt algorithm works.
I generally love your style but this one really has such an adorable vibe it makes me want to enjoy fall xD Thank you for the video! Definitely not stabbing any pumpkins this year :P
I couldn’t help imagining what my time would be like in the Pumpkin Lounge. I didn’t want anyone napping among the pillows on the left because that’s where I’d probably be. Doing what I do best. Napping 💤
some of these brushes in photoshop will lag incredibly if your PC is not strong enough, so that's why i don't really use a lot of brushes, mostly the basics one
Welcome (: I hope you enjoy your stay here. I just ran out of welcome cookies but help yourself to any of the videos here. I’ll try my best not to burn or eat the next batch 🍪 🍪🐻
@@angrymikko I'd like to see your process when uploading your work from procreate to Instagram! What do you do so Instagram doesn’t downgrade the quality of your drawing?
Hey man, another lovely video! Do you have a video or something showing your gear/setup you use for recording the iPad topshot scenes? I've built a setup but am not very happy with recording hours of my process with it.
The ultimate productivity hack for me is to play my switch battery to 0 in the evening and use it for my work sessions during the day. I use my MH sessions in the evening as a carrot to get me through the day.

Hey mikko! How do you paint clouds now? I watched an older video of yours and you used oriental brush but they removed it!? My procreate pocket still has it though…weird?
There’s a free brush on my Gumroad that’s better for painting and shaping clouds. There’s also a full cloud painting course happening on my membership at the moment.
@@angrymikko i’m struggling while painting it is so hard to get desired outcome like i can’t just do it i get the sketch done but not the colouring part
I have problems with that. I dont have a defined process, i try a lot of brushes, and make others, and try to find how way to render my illustration...
That's such a beautiful idea, to listen to what our art wants to say and then be in service of that. I normally just have the final image in my head and try and recreate it and it never works out - funnily enough bc I'm struggling with brushes! I'll keep this in mind!
Blank spaces are just one of those things a painting like this needs for those brush stroke edges to read. Once I feel the mood of the painting I know it's done. How finished or polished an illustration usually has no correlation with how much details there are. My recommendation is always put the story first and the rest of the decisions will be easier to make with that as a priority. And thank you =) I feel like I'm the lucky one here for having had the pleasure of spending a few days in the Pumpkin Lounge. Usually is strictly off limits for us humans🐻
amazing video... asking this very late (just noticed the video is 1 year old already) but in case you remember, what brush did you use here when you decided to finish the painting with just one brush?
This turned out amazing. I really like the atmosphere you conveyed with the color tones and soft feel to the linework. How many layers do you end up working with during a project. I have the issue in Procreate of constantly maxing out the layers and that can get frustrating. I know the smaller the artboard the more layers are available but going to small causes issues with quality when exporting. Any suggestions?
Knowing your own workflow lets you get closer to the layer limit without struggling with it. If it’s a constant problem then I recommend dropping the resolution until you have a better grasp on layer management with your own way of constructing the images. I have talked about layer management in my previous videos but the ease of making art should always be a priority before tackling layer management issues. My new painting is 9k x7k at 300dpi but all the main elements are on 4 layers while the rest are just for temporary elements. Some paintings require more layers and in those cases I just work smaller. Sometimes less layers can help bring a specific look to a piece that can be fitting for the mood. This pumpkin lounge is one of those. For something clean and sci-fi this approach would not have worked so I think it’s better to ask what is the best style and approach for your art and go from there. Layer management tricks are not hard to learn if you absolutely need more of them. Starting from clipping masks and using duplicate files can be a good place to start.
Greetings from Finland as well. Such a great video and I really like how you present information and your way of explaining things. Simple, clear and kind - bring comfort to me and inspiration to do more art. Thank you ☺️

Just wondering, what opacity do you set your brush to? I've never managed to find a balance between getting colour down and blending colours
100% almost always at 100. If I need to mix or blend the colour, most of my own tools let me do that by tilting the stylus sideways.

When you shrink or move an object how do you keep it from getting pixelated?
Always scale only down, never up. Never in nearest neighbour mode (unless you are making pixel art)
