VeloMetro's pedal-powered Veemo vehicle aims to get people out of their cars

- In this movie filmed in Vancouver, Kody Baker explains how his start-up VeloMetro is hoping to convince people to switch to a cleaner, healthier form of transport with a car-like vehicle that you pedal like a bike.
Called Veemo, the three-wheeled vehicle is fully enclosed and features a steering wheel, bucket seat and a lockable boot like a car, but must be pedalled to operate.
It is aimed at people living in cities who would normally be put off from cycling, says VeloMetro co-founder Baker in the movie, which was filmed at the start-up's studio in Vancouver, Canada.
"Studies have shown that up to 60% of a city's population would like to cycle more, but they don't right now," he says.
"They don't want to be exposed to the elements, they're afraid of riding in traffic, they don't have any room for storage. The Veemo really solves all these issues."
The increased weight of the vehicle compared to a traditional bicycle is offset by battery-powered electric motors, which assist the driver as they pedal.
"It has pedals like a bike, but as you pedal we add the strength of two Olympic athletes through our motors," Kody says. "It's providing a car-like experience, but it's regulated as a bicycle. So you don't need a driver's license, you don't need insurance. You have access to bike lanes, so you're not stuck in traffic."
The Veemo is being developed as an alternative to car-sharing networks, where customers have access to a fleet of vehicles they can hire for short-distance trips, and VeloMetro is developing a mobile app to enable people to locate, book and unlock the vehicles.
"We really designed Veemo from the ground up to be directed towards sharing networks, so that you can rent it by the minute," Kody explains.
"You use your cellphone, find the vehicle that is closest to you and unlock it with the app. You get in, enter your pin number, and then you're good to go."

i want an octoling powered car
Octo abuse
So cool. Definitely would want to do some more research on this and hopefully something like this could be a new norm instead of cars. Some suggestions: solar power (i don’t really know how it works) mostly and option for more of longer distances so your legs don’t get as tired. and option for” regular” electricity or battery if u have to get somewhere right away. Should probably also have a license and at least a restriction as to who can drive it.
I hope Bridgett (Agent 8) doesn't catch wind of this.

You know, this has some good potential
Does the outward tilt of the wheels help with the propensity for it to roll at tight corners? I noticed in the demonstrations of the Elf they were constantly told to take it easy around corners.
90% of the comments: VEEEMO

The industrial design looks great but addition of a wind screen wiper will be good.
I've been following the VeeMo for a while and am glad to hear that it is entering live testing.

pregunta se puede poner un dinamo para que mientras viaje carge la bateria
Any plans for a public purchase release? Would be perfect for Maryland weather.
Really wish we had this in Toronto. We need an alternative to TTC.
I've wanted to find or build something like this ever since I saw that kid mobster movie on Starz years ago. This is great. Where can I please one?
I want to buy one, or the PEBL - where in the UK can I get one?
I have had this dream long time and some one has finally make it.
This is really neat. I personally love cycling and on a rainy day, I would use something like this to get about. Great to see invention moving towards green transportation. Would the power for the VeloMetro be generated by the person pedaling?
No. No such thing as perpetual motion. Every bit of pedal power you can muster needs to be put into moving the vehicle. Trying to simultaneously charge a battery is like dragging an anchor. Kody is not being honest with you. EDIT - Kody interpreted this question differently than I did.
Well I guess you could read it either way. It is extremely common to see people asking if the bike has regenerative braking or if it can charge itself with pedaling. I encounter this question almost every day here on UA-cam.
Velo- All ELF owners who join the 500 strong Facebook owners group know of the discussions about treatments. The consensus is that commonly available pure liquid carnauba wax works well and helps to prevent so many micro scratches. I tested the Rain-x for plastic product a year ago when it came out and was not impressed, not worth it. Carnauba once a month works pretty well.

Good on you for not calling this a velomobile. Best of luck in your project.
... it is a velomobile. Any bicycle with a full fairing is a velomobile. It's just not a performance orientated velo like say a Quest, Mango, Orca or Rotovelo which focus more on efficiency.
Sorry, it's not. An enclosed bike whose primary mode of acceleration is via battery is, by definition, not a velomobile. This distinction is important when it comes to lobbying for proper laws protecting true bicycles, of which velomobiles are a member. This is a battery-assisted bicycle (pedelec) under the law... but not a velomobile as recognized by any standing velonaut groups. Pretty damn cool, mind you, but not a velomobile.
So... following that logic a Mango or FAW+ that someone has put an assist motor on ceases to be a velomobile???
edit: or one that comes from the manufacturer with an optional assist system isn't a velomobile?
edit 2: Or reversing that, if an ELF or PEBL didn't have an e-assist system would it then become a velomobile?
In answer to your first edit question: To a traditionalist, yes, anything with assist of any kind cannot be a velomobile. However, it would seem that the velomobiling community is willing to accept anything which conforms to the normal standards AND does not have an e-assist exceeding what a healthy cyclist can output (250w) as a velomobile. This is because, at above 250w, the motor itself becomes the primary mode of transportation and the human power becomes the secondary mode of power. This breaks the main rule of what is, or is not, a velomobile. Consider a gas powered scooter (which by law, must have pedals to be a scooter). If you purchase a gas powered scooter and run the 1000w+ engine but are also turning the mostly-useless pedals, are you a velomobile? Of course not, even if that scooter is the fully-covered type as you sometimes see in Asia.
And to your second edit question yes, an ELF with a tiny assist or no assist at all would largely fit the criteria of a velomobile except that the rule of "must be able to pedal for a significant distance at a significant speed" would be awfully tough to do with something weighing 100+ lbs, so that would still disqualify those heavyweights.
No need to take my word for it. Visit BROL or any other velomobiling hobby site and ask for yourself.
Interesting. How about the ventilation inside of the vehicle? The windscreen fogging will be a big problem with that.
Ok. How about the ventilation? Even though it's electric assisted, you have to pedal. So there will be very hot inside.
Remember this was made in Canada with a wet maritime climate. The ELF, my chosen transportation, is much cooler. I live in Florida. 800 ELFs have been sold. The new PEBL going into production now is also pretty closed in. The claim of an anti-fog coating that is durable is highly unlikely. The fogging problem is going to encourage drivers to not pedal as hard, and the pedelec system sucks.
Power windows? Really? Another example of over engineering. Some day there may be a market for your price class but not now.
Well this probably fills the gap between cars and a fast European production velomobiles. For normal people, changing from a car to a proper velomobile might be too big shock. This is much closer to a car.
I ride a Quest and I live in Finland. On flat road I can easily keep a speed of 40 km/h without any electric assist. With racing hood I have noticed that the visor tends to fog very easily and there is very hot inside. So ventilation is needed.
Saukki - your words indicate a good grasp of the market. I would add that the Organic Transit and the new PEBL now in production are closest to transition vehicles with their cargo and passenger carrying capacity. While the Veemo is a sexy design it does not compete on pay load and price point.
Can I get one for personal use? I live in Bouder Co.
I wish you could make a family version to seat 2 or 4 people
I want this tomorrow😊
I just want to buy one for myself.

Great idea, but needs to undercut ELF in price. Would like to see at-least two versions: Long range electric assisted, and a very basic short range electric assisted w/o solar. Some of us just need a local grocery getter and want to be sheltered and surrounded for short trips. We don't need a solar panel and high tech/expensive battery packs which add hundreds to the price. And some of us are not athletic bike enthusiasts who don't mind constant tweaking and tinkering, we want simple, reliable transportation, NOT an expensive hobby. Consider what an active senior citizen would like to own, and how s/he would use it to good advantage.

Very interesting I am glad more companies are trying to develop alternative forms of biking transportation. I hope all of them success. Euro Velos are built for bike enthusiast, utility Velos like the Pebl, Elf, and PodRide are for people who still want a bike but need a little more "car" convince, and this might help ease people into a form of comfortable transportation that requires a peddling effort. I like your approach to ride share. This would allow one to be "carless" in a metro area but still have independent transportation option. Good luck on this!

Poorly. It is too heavy so pedaling won't help.
You can put pedals on an 18 wheeler with a 50,000 watt motor, doesn't mean you actually contribute to the forward motion. This vehicle exceeds the maximum practical weight of legitimate pedal assist by 100 pounds or more.
People don't actually drive it just fine, they are being fooled into thinking they are contributing significantly to the motion of the vehicle when they are not. Look, the upper weight limit for a 750 watt motor assist legal in the US is 160 pounds, the new 195 pound PEBL by better.bike is a disaster because it can't climb a hill. Wattage of the motor controls how fast the heavier vehicles can go, not the human assist.
now its open cabin bycycle not enclosed , why?
Good
One of the good things about this ride is its as fast as most other bikes out there so it wouldn't be holding up other cyclists in the bike lanes.
One of the bad things is the weight, at least 100 pounds more than the ELF so pedaling does little to move it and you can't pedal up the slightest hill if the battery dies.
How soon will these be available in Portland, Oregon..? Are you working with the founder of ebikes.ca..? (they are also in Vancouver BC. Their charging system is the best for maintaining lithium batteries (cyclesatiator)
No there is nothing special about the satiator for $400 that a $100 charger can't do as well or better. Many good lithium chargers have a setting for an 80 or 90% charge to increase battery life. You also have to keep the charge current as low as possible to extend battery service life and the satiator gives out up to 5 amps, too much for medium sized batteries. The satiator is only worth it for a bike shop with many different batteries of various voltages. My qualifications - I'm an electronics technician with 12 years ebike commuting and an ELF owner for the last 29 months, got rid of my car.
Thanks for the information. All of this new battery tech can be overwhelming. I want to find a Solar charging system for my 48v 14.5ah lithium-ion batteries on my etrike. I have been looking at the flexible 100w solar panels, combining this with a controller/charge booster to bring that 18v up to the needed 54.6v needed to charge the 48v battery. (i have been told about these boosters, but am unable to find them anywhere) The solar guy in Portland, said it cannot be done. But I think he has a large inventory of outdated equipment/components and needs to liquidate. :) My Idea is to build a canopy with flexible tent poles and crossbars. I just need the technical parts numbers to get everything together. Do you know about Solar charging..? or do you know who would know this information to head me in the right direction...?
Isn't the ELF 48v and what model of charge controller do they have on their solar system to deliver the recommended charging volts/amps..? Thanks my friend. Robb
Rob - the Genasun MPPT compact solar chargers are one of the best features on the ELF. genasun.com/all-products/solar-charge-controllers/for-lithium/gv-5-li-lithium-5a-solar-charge-controller/
I didn't find the exact model you need with my quick search but they have one that is 5 amp rated that is perfect for a 48 volt lithium pack. They have versions that boost PV voltage from 12 to 48 V easily and very efficiently. Good luck engineering a way to suspend a panel above your trike safely and securely, that will be a trick but if done right you have some sun and weather protection over your head. Mine charges my ELF easily in Florida and it keeps the battery near full during shorter trips. I never fully discharged my battery completely even once in 29 months of daily use.

Could u not have given it 4 wheels?
UA-camr Person it doesn’t need it. You could always buy a 4th wheel and carry it in your arms if it means that much to you.
The short answer is no. Local and Canadian regulations require that a four wheeled vehicle be registered, licensed, and insured, like an automobile. What would be the point? These guys have designed this thing to barely fly under the regulatory radar - E-assist, 500W, three wheels. They know what they're doing.
@@johnspooner1403 Same in the USA as well no 4 wheels either.
@@johnspooner1403 There are certainly 4 wheel bicycles allowed in some places - the podbike of which there are also videos is a 4 wheel bicycle but maybe in some places it would not be counted as a bicycle - the definition of a bicycle may vary between countries and states.

Put a solar panel on top of it like the ELF made by Organic Transit. If it can recharge in the sun, it becomes more valuable. The ELF can go 30 MPH with pedal assistance. This vehicle may be to slow. Anything less than 30 MPH is to slow to drive on most roads. If this vehicle can't go 30 MPH with pedaling, it will have serious problems competing with the ELF.
VeloMetro Mobility Inc is the solar panel big enough to maintain charged the velometro all day?
Im building a solar e bike too, love this idea of mobilty!
Brian you keep posting this garbage after I have corrected you repeatedly across the web. The motor completely cuts out at 20 mph and going faster requires gearing the standard ELF is not sold with even if you did have the Olympic class endurance to pedal a bulky 160 lb bike 30 mph. Just not going to happen except down hill.
But yes the solar roof is a great feature that makes the whole concept come together.
Is it flat? If not it is seriously de-rated. The OT 100 watt panel puts out no more than 80 watts in summer Florida sun. But I could get by with an 80 watt panel here since I get so much sun here my battery never runs flat even in winter.
