    THIS WEEK’S FEATURED LIVE UNBOXING
Rolex Daytona Platinum Anniversary Model ref. 116506
Find the Rolex 116506 for sale here: www.bobswatches.com/rolex-day...
ABOUT THIS WATCH: Rolex officially released the Cosmograph Daytona in 1963. Since then, it has held the title of the brand’s signature chronograph meant for motorsport and other thrill-seeking collectors with a sharp eye for style.
To truly understand ref. 116506’s design, we must first take a quick trip through the Daytona’s past. While its core aesthetic has remained largely the same, it began a contemporary transformation shortly after Rolex started incorporating Cerachrom, aka ceramic, bezels into its vast portfolio in the mid-2000s.
The Everose Daytona ref. 116515, released in 2011, was the first model in the series to sport the lustrous material, followed shortly after by the Rolex Platinum Daytona ref. 116506 featured in this week’s live unboxing.
Another notable modern upgrade made around this time was the first in-house Rolex chronograph movement, the caliber 4130, which debuted alongside the stainless steel ref. 116520 in 2000.
While platinum dates as far back in the Rolex portfolio as the 1920s and the curious Platinette pocket watch, Rolex only recently started incorporating the lustrous material into its pillar models. Furthermore, Rolex only uses the finest 950 platinum on the market, which is produced in-house.
2013: ROLEX DEBUTS THE ROLEX PLATINUM ANNIVERSARY DAYTONA 116506
Fast-forward to 2013 and the Daytona’s 50th anniversary. Rolex marked the occasion in grand fashion by releasing one of the most exquisite models in the collection’s illustrious history, the platinum ref. 116506.
While the Everose model that preceded it was equipped with a striking black ceramic bezel, the Daytona model debuted with a deep chestnut brown insert and a striking icy blue dial decorated with brown chronograph registers.
Brown might be a curious choice for such an important watch, but the light blue watch face isn’t, as they are typically a trademark of platinum Rolex watches. It’s also important to note that not every platinum Rolex will have the ice blue dial, but every ice blue dial is exclusive to platinum Rolex watches.
That brings us to Watches and Wonders 2023. Rolex discontinued this fascinating model to make way for the current production ref. 126506, which sports a newer caliber 4131 movement and a history-making exhibition case back.
This Anniversary Rolex is a fundamental model that will undoubtedly take pride of place in the collection of anyone who is lucky enough to own it.
    Platinum Rolex Price: Approx. $100k

I agree. Diamonds on a sports watch is too much.

Still enjoying my GMT-Master II "Coke" bezel I received last week. It makes me smile every time I look at it, so I think that it was a good choice for me. I know that chronographs are popular, and none more so than the Daytona, but they're just not for me. It's a complication that I'm willing to bet not many people actually use, even occasionally, but I get that many people simply love the look. If I were to somehow find myself with this watch, I would no doubt sell it and get 2 or 3 other watches instead.
