A Brief Overview Of The Rolex Nicknames Featured In This Video:
ROLEX PEPSI: Rolex released the first GMT Master in the 1950s, featuring a red and blue bezel to distinguish between day and night hours. The two-tone bezel has since become synonymous with the innovative pilot’s watch and is called the “Rolex Pepsi” after the famous soda.
ROLEX SMURF: is the white gold Submariner ref. 116619LB with a blue dial and bezel. The lustrous white metal finish, crisp white Chromalight hour markers, and vibrant blue dial and bezel resemble the adorable Belgian cartoon characters.
ROLEX COOKIE MONSTER: Rolex discontinued the Rolex Smurf ref. 116619LB in favor of the new model ref. 126619LB. It kept the same blue bezel but swapped the matching blue dial for black. This black and blue colorway has since earned the watch the nickname “Rolex Cookie Monster.” Some collectors also refer to it as the “Rolex Blueberry.”
ROLEX HULK: Ref. 116610LV was the first Submariner to sport a green ceramic bezel and a matching green dial. As a 5-digit model, it also features slightly larger crown guards and broader lugs than its 5-digit predecessors, leading to the Marvel-inspired nickname “Rolex Hulk.”
ROLEX BATMAN & BATGIRL: The Rolex Batman, ref. 116710BLNR was the first GMT Master II to feature a two-tone ceramic bezel and the first to sport a black and blue bezel. The darker bezel insert and accompanying blue GMT hand are reminiscent of the Dark Knight himself, hence the nickname “Rolex Batman.”
Ref. 116710BLNR was only ever produced on the three-link Oyster bracelet; however, when it was discontinued in favor of the current-production ref. 126710BLNR, the Oyster bracelet was swapped for the dressier 5-piece link Jubilee bracelet. This swap led to the nickname “Rolex Batgirl.” Today, ref. 126710BLNR is available on either the Oyster or Jubilee bracelet.
ROLEX ROOTBEER: is yet another Rolex GMT with a soda-inspired nickname. This time, it sports brown, gold, and cream hues reminiscent of Root Beer. Many variations of the Rolex Root Beer exist, including those with an aluminum bezel in either all-brown or two-tone, dials decorated with distinctive yellow gold nipple hour markers, and even a modern ceramic model with a black and brown ceramic bezel and Everose.
ROLEX PAUL NEWMAN: His wife gifted the beloved actor and racing enthusiast Paul Newman a Rolex Daytona around the late 1960s. He wore the watch religiously for the next several decades, forever cementing the iteration he wore as the “Rolex Paul Newman.” His watch had a white Panda dial with black sub-dials decorated with distinctive Art Deco numerals and square-tipped hashes. Other variations of the Daytona with these unusual sub-dials are also called Rolex Paul Newman watches. They include black or white dials and even stainless steel or gold metal finishes.
Rolex Steve McQueen: is the Rolex Explorer II ref. 1655. The inaugural model was released in the early 1970s and featured a vibrant orange arrow hand and a bezel with alternating numerals and hash marks. Curiously enough, McQueen was never known to wear the watch. Rather, the association is rumored to have originated from an advertising campaign from the 1970s.
Rolex President: To be considered a Rolex President, the watch must feature a President bracelet. It features rounded links and is exclusive to the Day-Date and select variations of the Lady-Datejust. The powerful nickname stems from the Day-Date’s appearance on many American Presidents’ wrists.

I guess I chose the right day to be sporting my Rolex GMT "Coke." I think there was another green-colored Rolex that was called "Sprite", in keeping with the soda references, but I can't recall the configuration. As to Steve McQueen, I thought that the Tag Heuer Monaco had that nickname, but maybe not. Seiko watches have many nicknames (Turtle, Orange Monster, e.g.). Most Grand Seikos, like my Katana, come with a name from the manufacturer, Snowflake probably being the most well-known. Fun discussion today.

    • @bobswatches
      @bobswatches  26 днів тому +2

The "Coke" is a great choice to accompany this week's video! The newer GMT-Master II ref. 126720 has garnered the "Sprite" nickname by many. It's pretty fitting for it's black and green bezel configuration. Steve McQueen famously wore the TAG Heuer Monaco Chronograph in the classic film "Le Mans". But many collectors refer to the Rolex Explorer II 1655 by this name despite no record of him ever wearing it. Happy to hear you enjoyed the conversation about the vast array of watch nicknames across many watches and brands.

Yes! Some vintage watches just "have it" and the 1655 with its bright orange "Freccione" hand is one of them! It's clear to see why it gained a cult following after initially being a slow seller when first released.

I'm wearing my Starbucks today and I love its nickname! I like almost all Rolex nicknames - they make the hobby more fun and lighthearted. Just don't walk into a Rolex AD and ask for any of these by their nickname, it doesn't go over well - LOL.

Tudor Black Bay Chrono reverse panda currently on the wrist. As far as nicknames, I personally like "The Hulk". One of my favorite watches. And I also like the "James Cameron" as it is a very appropriate nickname. Not just because it was released in his honor but the dial represents the depths of the ocean where the Titanic lays. I happen to really like "The Smurf" for the double blue. Great watch and a great nickname.

There is definitely no Batgirl. What a dumb lame reach is right. I own a Batman on a Jubilee and it’s incredible and it’s just a Batman period.

I totally disagree on the Steve McQueen. First all the characters that other watches are named after don’t exist except a few like the Paul Newman and a few others. There is no such thing as a Hulk, or Batman etc. they are fictional characters. The coolest vintage watch ever is the 1655. Steve McQueen was a real living person from the exact same era. He was hugely popular during that time period. He was the coolest of the cool guys. He COULD have actually bought one and worn it. Batman or Kermit the frog didn’t even exist. Steve McQueen…best name ever.

    • @bobswatches

Thanks for watching and sharing your perspective! Our point on the Ref. 1655 being called the "Steve McQueen" was that there's zero documentation of him wearing the Explorer II. So despite the watch being a wonderful timepiece, the nickname association is hard to process for some.
