- Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2010 | Andalucía's Moorish heritage sparkles in the historic capitals of Granada and Córdoba. And the pride of the Reconquista and the power of Queen Isabel and King Ferdinand enliven the region's great sights. Tasting the smooth sherry and marveling at prancing stallions, we find the passion in Andalusian culture. And we top it off with fun in the Spanish sun on the Costa del Sol. #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #spain

I swear Rick Steves' videos are the only content left online where the comments are always polite and positive! :)
I admire Rick Steves' coverage of many countries and often watch them. However, in this one he comments that he just passes through Malaga, inferring it's a city not worth visiting, which is untrue and unfair. As a Brit who speaks Spanish, and spent 13 years living close by, I can say with certainty that Malaga is one of the most exquisite and interesting cities in the world. The Alcazaba, which overlooks the port, is an incredible fortress/palace that was built during the Moorish conquest and it stands next to fabulous Roman ruins. The cathedral is close by and so is the beautiful Plaza de la Constitution. In a maze of gorgeous back streets stands the Picasso museum, housed in an old Palace. Malaga is full of old and new museums, plus on the outskirts the botanical gardens are spectacular. Also, the gardens and restaurants that lie between the Alcazaba and the port are among the best in the world. As much as I admire Rick, and I do, (normally his travel snippets are informed and interesting) I suggest he spends time in Malaga, to at least have tapas in the square next to the cathedral, opposite the Episcopal Palace, to review it properly.
Visited Malaga in 2019 and returning in 2024...wonderful parks, Picasso, a vintage auto museum that I'll revisit, fascinating excavations of a Roman amphitheatre, great food...and of course The Alcazaba...and I found it more walkable than many of the places on Rick's itinerary...agree with you Jane...
Agreed, I visited the major cities in Andalucia and the two that personally enchanted me the most were Malaga and of course Granada.
I've also been to Malaga, (a totally spontaneous visit while driving through Spain), and I also really enjoyed it. But Rick only has 25-ish minutes.
I lived in Belgium for years (truly amazing little country), and Rick only has one episode on the whole country😢 Just be grateful he mentioned Malaga at all!
Italy and Spain are my two favorite places in Europe.

My fascination with Spain and Europe began when I was 12 and started stamp collecting. In retirement I spent about 18 months in ,and around the Meditterian.
Near Granada and Cordoba are two World Heritage cities that are worth visiting, BAEZA and UBEDA.
Rick, if you come back in Andalusia do not miss these two cities, will surprise you.Greetings from Spain.
rcanher I will go there, thanks a lot for advising.
rcanher ok
And Ronda,and Jerez and...
Cádiz is one of the most beautiful cities of Spain,it´s near Sevilla, and it is the most ancient city of occidental Europe.

Is Cadiz Gortoba/Grenada?
@@kaker4444 Cadiz is south west of Seville, on the coast west of Gibraltar; Córdoba is very close to Seville, just east, and Granada as further east an hour north on the costa, all beautiful cities!
You seem like such a pleasant person ! was an awesome video and helped me in planning my trip ! Thank you

Wow! This is a gorgeous country!
I enjoyed watching Rick Steves' travel programs on PBS.
Thanks Rick Steve for your depiction of real history through this wonderful video
Lovely! So much culture and joy in less than half an hour. It is amazing! Thank you
The Alhambra with its filigree ceilings is always magical, and I will never forget the Mezquia of Cordoba.
As a cordobés (person coming from Córdoba) I should say islamic arquitecture in the Catholic Cathedral its precious. I love arabian arquitecture

I have been travelling so much in lock thanks Rick he has been a great companion.
Very excellent that Spaniard keep spanish identity by brave reconquest of spain
Spain is good to visit
Heading to Spain the end of the month. Starting in Barcelona and the Basque Region to San Sebastián and then on to Madrid. Was undecided where to go next. Considered flying to Portugal but now wanting to discover more of Spain. Thanks for helping me decide Andalusia and Costa del Sol were not to be missed.
Brilliant and most informative Rickf for a country that I feel such a connection with.
Just a clarification regarding the "One common culture" statement. It is a historic fact that at the end of XV century all the Jews were kicked off the Spanish territory along with the Arabs by the Royal couple Isabella and Ferdinand

Malaga is amazing: it has a Roman theatre, Islamic fortress, Baroque cathedral and two Picasso museums, including the birthplace museum.
que belleza mas autentica , pura vida, pura belleza !!!
I live in Andalucia and Italy. Two magnificent countries !! Wonderful video, but a pity that you didn't go a little further than Nerja to visit our incredibly beautiful village of Mijas Pueblo. It's perched on a hill with magnificent views, with little winding streets that offers interesting nooks and crannies.
A view of the motorway?
The video just reminds me the time I was in Andalusia. The sunshine, food, beach and flower. Andalusia is simply Paradise.
yes i love espana and iam spanish and guamanian!!.
Excellent presentation about Granada.
Thank You sir Rick. Beautiful area. It's worth a vacation of 7 days after a year of work. Actually after about 8-9 years of work. But poverty is extreme I can't enjoy a vacation. It only remains for me me to watch on UA-cam and enjoy nature, new places and people from other areas .
i feel you as I can relate to that. I'm so poor I can only dream of ever travelling far. But at least I can travel once in a while within my country I suppose.
Thank you for the nice work on this beautiful video
Rien de plus beau que l andalousie.tellement de choses a voir❤
Great video! Very interesting how the different groups ( the Roman, the Moors, the Christians) influenced Spain as we know it today. Also, that paella looked delicious!
22:43 the guy who wore polo shirt with bangs hair is so cute. ❤️❤️❤️ Also the sacristan who wore that church outfit... Cuteness overload
14:05 mmm... I really like the history of the places where you travel
I love your video, including history and modern, video quality is very high HD, thank you!--From China.
Beautiful Granada ! Love 🇪🇸
loved the bloopers at the end haha!
Its beautiful one .I wish I will be visit there one day.
While visiting both Cordoba and Granada on a trip a while back, I couldn't help but cry, such tolerance, beauty, progressiveness, and spiritualism that was unseen in that time period, all gone. Lost in time, forgotten, destroyed... Al-Andalus, you will always be remembered!!!!
+Hamza Tahir
Oh yes!! what a glorious past that was destroyed!!... We have to call those from the Islamic State to come back to past, to reestablish sharia and public executions....... (nostalgia mode-on) *sigh*
+Hamza Tahir a lot of the golden age can be recaptured but....tolerance.....or con-viveality....must be enforced to be relearned not just reinforced by example.
+ay lorgatete you never heard of the spanish inquizition.or what...?
Wrong: The invading Islamic forces were far from tolerant. They were an invading force upon an already Christian Spanish Peninsula. Thank goodness for the reconquest of Christian lands from a violent and invading people.
rasecphd I see why u have this twisted view, know that the state of islam today was not the state of Islam a millenium ago. If the Arabs were so horribly intolerant, they would have never managed an empire of such scale in such a short amount of time. How can u praise the reconquista when it is well known the Jews, gypsies, and anyone in between were brutally persecuted. Most Europeans blamed the jews for the black death xD like what even. What I stated above is concrete and widely accepted, stop spewing hypocrisy just to prove a point.
Rick! Keep on inspiring us! Thanks
You should have mentioned Nerja in the title. I 've been to Andalucía and I think Nerja is the most beautiful and the best town I've ever been to. It's a true gem. I recognised it right from the first picture of this video. I was sitting on those rocks and I miss them so much.
Malaga it's beautiful ❤ yes !
I born here.
Thanks Rick. The best video on Cordoba.
Lovely; thank you !
You make me want to go there, Mr Steves!
Excellent video. Congratulations. We recommend everyone to visit Nerja, Costa del Sol ❤
what a country spain pur beauty !
We just came from Spain. Went to malaga, cordoba, madrid, granada. I wish you mentioned the legacy of the Spanish Inquisition: Hanging ham outside of the stores. During the inquisition, people used to hang ham outside in order to display that they were Christian, since Jews and Muslims don't eat pork.
Christians are not allowed to eat pork either. I am Ortodox christian from Ethiopia.
"Legacy of Inquisition"??
Are you talking about Unbelievable torture forced conversion and ethnic cleansing of once the most tolerant, most sophisticated and most advanced part of Europe?
And yeah those hams were a sign of intolerance and hate which you are proud of...
Interesting. I didn't know that!
@@kime9560 because is not true. You can understand better about Spanish Inquisition with the enjoijed and enough good documental of the BBC the myth of spanish inquisition
Icanseeclearlynow maybe only in Ethiopia. Not in Europe. Eating pork here is a must. And, man, it is so good!!!
Thank you!!! I visited Spain in 1976--reminiscing!!!
Wow!

Wow how beautiful is Spain
I have yet to visit Granada. I will in 2022. Covid changed my travel plans in 2020 & 2021. I was in Andalusia in early October 2019. I loved all of southern Spain, my family's homeland
So beautiful. I must visit.
Andalucía is the best part of Spain. I love Granada (and Al Hambra) and went to that mosque too. Cordoba was awesome, so was Seville, and Ronda too, and Malaga was good. Costa Del Sol is OK since I stayed in Torremolinos but also went to Marbella which was quite nice
Beautiful country!😍

Very interesting video, I live in San pedro near Marbella so am lucky enough to be able to get to seville, Cordoboda and granada by a local inexpensive bus.
Hi, does the local bus take foreigners places too ? And how much does it cost that you say is cheap please. Thank you !
I love all your videos, they always take me to those places, and it takes all my attention and I almost feel that I was there . God bless
Hoping to visit Sevilla, Cadiz, Granada and Malaga in december. This video is very helpful as a preview.

So far, Spain's tourism has been overlooked and very undervalued by common international visitors.

Travelers is great fun
Great video. Note that Australian bank debit and credit Visa and Mastercard cards won't work for buying tickets online for the Alhambra. There are no other options than to pay by card. It was very frustrating spending days trying to buy a ticket and then watching available tickets dwindle down to 0 for the morning slots. I had to buy the much more expensive Granada card. Lots of posts on the internet over many years about this and still nothing has been done to rectify it. Some people have success with an Amex card.
Awesome video! more travel tips and ideas here :)
Malaga is interesting. I can live there.
Cordoba is amazing town to live even its very close to Madrid by AVE. And Granada its amazing too, both the capital historic cities of Andalusia and not Seville who turned a new city into modernity of the 15th century
Spain the sweetest country in Europe!
Good !
Love your videos Rick, but some facts you mentioned are incorrect and some others you simply forgot to mention:
1.- The Moors did not conquer the entire Iberian Peninsula. In fact several Christian kingdoms remained very much sovereign in the north of the Iberian Peninsula, and eventually prevailed and reclamied the land to the Moors: the Reconquista.
2.- The Cathedral-Mosque of Cordoba was originally a Catholic Christian church built by the Visigoths, then the Moors built on top of it.
Spain is an amazing country, with a rich history, culture and heritage. Are you planning a trip to the Canary Islands? Such an amazing and understimated archipelago. Eevery island is different and all of them have awesome landscapes and pincturesque villages. Especially nice is Gran Canaria, the miniature continent.
There is always a touch of racism somewhere
Matt Owen Your correct.I caught that right away in his narration.Rick is usually correct so I’m a little surprised.
