Push harder. Someone gave my wife a walking stick for me. I was shocked at how crippled it made me feel. I challenge my self harder every day. Look for long hard work, walks etc. Still can’t run but pushing short bursts. We just had 3 weeks of rain and Hurricane Beryl my 1/3 acre yard had grass and tropical weeds over a foot tall. And a dozen broken palms. Spent all day removing debris, chopping trees and weed whacking. Sore everywhere for days afterwards. Take my big energetic dog for hard fast walks. 2 years ago I couldn’t walk, get out of bed etc. Bad Anxiety. Still can’t stand on one leg but just discovered that if I stand in a open door frame and focus on a fixed point high on the wall in front I can get a few seconds on each leg. Always changing myself. Getting better👍
So sorry for your troubles. Stiffness can also be a result of tension being held in the body subconciously, as an adrenalin and cortisol fuelled response during and after a horrible natural disaster. Your body may be stuck in fight/flight and hypervigilence. Try taking warm baths to down regulate and rebalance your nervous system, and tell yourself the garden clear-up may take longer, but my body will last longer. Wishing you well.
Turning 30, 40, 50, 60, or 70 never bothered me. But turning 80 has awakened me to the reality of the aging process. Thank you for this video. Just trying it once, I absolutely know I can soon keep up with my 3 grown children and 2 grown grandchildren.
Thank you - I'm 65, worked out/hiked for years, then - injuries. Ugh. Just going down the stairs outside is painful. I did some PT but can't afford it. Between injuries and vision changes I feel like I'm 80. Will look at this.
Thank you!!! I will start today.. Im only 73 and walk like a drunk. I think part of my issue is I have had a torn retina in my left eye. I have a hard time with depth perception MOSTLY when I am walking. I am hoping doing these exercises will help get some of my balance back. again .. THANK YOU
Thank you doctor. I turned 80 this year and since COVID have had balance problems. I will definitely do these exercises in the hope that I will walk easily again. Prior to COVID I took advantage of the YMCA senior classes on a daily basis but practically nothing since then and every muscle and bone hurts when I try to walk.🙏
At 74 I can do all of these exercises without holding on to anything - just in my kitchen. But I'm often out in the garden on uneven ground and there, if I bend over to pull a weed, I sometimes fall over. Besides being often on uneven ground, I actually think that some of my occasional balance issues are not my muscles at all but my vision as I'm looking down to keep from stepping off a curb or stumbling over some obstacle, hence I'm not standing erect in a balanced way.
I am 78 years old and I share your exact problem. It is scary to feel off balance just from looking around or up or down. It feels like my debth perception is off.
I recently saw an article where changing eyeglasses to help with depth perception immediately corrected balance problem. Try that. Also work on strengthening your lower body, and balance exercises. This video is great too.
@@JLR4244Yes, it feels like the problem is in my head. So I'm just careful and slow. If I look up at a bird or the sky, then I stop and regain my sense of balance before resuming walking. People can just put up with my "different" behavior, I spent decades walking fast and weaving around people.
First time seeing your channel...I am 79.5 yrs old w no health issues, but some walking and balance challenges. Without my long boring history, last winter I went to PT 2x's week for 8 weeks and maybe 5% improvement...not worth my time.I went to an exercise class and we did a lot of stomping which after 6months, I found that I had more balance and easier stepping up a curb. I think what happened was that my left knee was out of alignment and the stomping put it back in and this after many yrs. The other thing I noticed is that I usually still walk like that problem is still there. When I become aware of this, I think differently and my gait becomes more natural .."more" being the operative word. I am looking forward to the trying your exercises...off the top of my head I think I will be able to do some and others with difficulty. I agree with another commenter to show the exercises with a senior not some young person. A friend of mine is 86 and wife 83 lead walking and kayak groups. I say to myself if they can do it, so can I improve and they are older than I am.
Best set of exercises for balance I’ve found. After partial knee replacement my balance was severely compromised. It is now after 5 years almost back to normal. Wish I had seen your video 5 years ago, now I can finally work on the final stage. Thankyou.
Thanks so much, I must admit I lost my faith in walking. I fell in 90, and 95 breaking an ankle in each fall, I recovered of course. It left a mental issue and I lost confidence regarding walking. I do it, but walk slower then I should. Thanks for the presentation.
Started the step over and the side step, I didn't have a problem with these without holding onto anything. I've been doing heel raises for a while. I'm working on the tandem standing and walking as well as standing on one leg, baby steps.
Thank you very much Dr. I just hit 79 this month. I do have balance problem ..am doing 15 minutes walk exercise at home. Will surely follow your instruction..look forward to it too.God bless.
Very helpful subbed ❤ (nice one yt) l have balance issues not quite 70 anyway fairly active, four months ago I started walking 2 miles a day, quickly realised I need some help, I have rh and could not use a regular walking stick, looked up alternatives and got some walking poles, wow what help they have been, a couple of weeks ago did a 20 mile walk (yeah took all day) anyway at my age 2.5 an hour is about average, with poles now I can do two miles in half an hour (4 mph) even had a short run (with sticks). I think what I’m saying in quite a short while for me there have definitely huge improvements in my walking. Pleasantly surprised when this came in my recommendations, BTW feel sooo much better for walking. Oh and cut out alcohol eat one meal a day, cut out processed foods which means fruit veg meat ( only bread is wholemeal pittas, if careful can get them without rapeseed oil)
Oh I can change my walk in a heartbeat it just depends on time and place For instance whenever I'm out in public i walk very upbeat i don't want to appear to be slow and helpless i can fall out later. when i get home lol however I will take your advice seriously thank you
Still healing after 7 mo. I'd right ankle that suffered a hairline fracture, lost tendon, chipped ankle bone on tip..still wearing slides. Cannit wear any tennis shoe or regular flat. Still healing. 3rd XRAY, Medicare Dr. Said healed. Not. Showed 3 foot exercises. Afterwards, really hurts. Still sleeping on elevated pillows. This is July. I need this healed. Wore a boot only 1x mo going to grocery store. I cannot walk as fast as I always have. At grocery store to cart. Only used platform cane in beginning. At apt. I go barefooted.
As you walk, look up in the air well above the horizon, that holds your head and neck upright, and, show-off the bottoms of your shoes to the people behind you, that will cause you to naturally pick up your feet.
I’m very active and do way more exercises than most my age. (Run, dance Zumba, weight training.) I just wish I didn’t have so much arthritis pain in my lower back. Sometimes I can’t straighten up for several steps after I get up, due to pain. Doubt there are exercises that help.
Check out stop chasing pin videos dr Perry mickelson. He says there’s a reason behind that pain and it’s not always in the spot where that pain is manifesting where the problem lies. Often in another area..
There's a company called Lifewave who sell special patches you put on your body to help with all sorts of problems. The patches are free from drugs, chemicals and stimulants. There's lots of information online - try Google and UA-cam. Arthritis is all about inflammation and there are specific patches for inflammation.
Kathy , yes there are exercises to help. I have arthritis in my lumbar, but I’m 79 with no pain because I daily work on strengthening my glutes and my hips, and I do gentle stretches to keep area flexible. When I get weak or inflexible I hurt. So I keep it up. Also if you get stiff and pained when you stand up, after sitting for a while, try standing up and swinging your hips side to side in place. Like Marilyn Monroe, for 30-60 seconds. It works for me. Good luck Kathy.
Thanks! I hope you find it helpful. I agree, it’s not easy to go back. If anyone finds that their walking improves from this video I’d call it a victory.
Wonderful to find someone who uses exercises that I can do. One time we were asked to put out foot on a table!!! What, without a crane to help lol. These, I can see me doing with a little practise. The heel to tow I have never been good at.
