On the early models the resistor goes in through the radiator side of the fan shroud. This explains how to do that. You will be needing to hold the new resistor in place with 2 small screwdrivers to be able to put on the plug.

The resistor is melting because the fans are pulling to much current. Replace the fans and the resistor.

yea I you are probably right.

David I have replaced these resistors before and have known people who drove these cars for years afterwards with no issues. Yes, replacing the whole fan assembly is probably the better way, but some people can only afford the $30 for the resistor kit rather than $150 for the whole fan assembly.

@@LA_Commander I am happy that you had luck just replacing the resistors. But , I put a new resistor in and it melted again. The fans were old and still turning but pulling to much current. You always have to balance a fan assembly or a head gasket. On chat, I always suggest the safest option.

You made that a lot harder than it should have been. Disconnect the wires to the fan assembly press the tab on each side of the fan assembly lift up a half inch so it comes out of the recess and then lower the whole assembly. It comes right at the bottom. You don't have to pry you don't have to be a super mechanic with great hand and eye coordination. And you don't have to worry about breaking anything neither.

To do this job the right way, you need to remove the whole fan assembly. Trust me, it makes this job a LOT easier. First jack up the front end of the car. Then undo the electrical connectors topside. Then crawl under the car and you can undo the 2 clips at the top super easy, lift the fan up 1/2" and then just pull the whole assembly down and out from under the vehicle. Can be done in less than 5 minutes. Now you can work on the fan resistor on your workbench (or even the floor) with plenty of room and it not only goes faster, you are doing a better quality job. When done, pop the fan back in from under the car and bam, you're done.

Thats one way to do it i quess but its the hard way you can simply undo a few wires lift the shroud up and out of the pockets it sits in then lower it and its much easier and less likely to tear anything up including your hands good day

    Thank for your video
My question is when I changed the six wires clip the wires coming from the resistor are same color so does it make a difference to connect either one

stupid ford euro designers. the older model they pop out (1 minute job),like you said. I think i will try doing it your way before taking it all the way off the car. still a pain either way.THANK YOU FORD EUROPE!!! Thank you Mike.

Bro, 1st off, thank you for posting a focus repair vid! However, my 03 focus, zetec vin-3, I have replaced everything. & fans still won't cycle! I can make them run constantly by unplugging the head temp sensor, (which is new & I replaced the cooling fan solenoid. Both this week) I see 2 wires (1 white & 1 brown wire's) running to something bolted to the underside of the core support. It seems to be wired in to the same harness as the cooling fan solonoid. Can you tell me what that is & what it does? Can it cause my cooling cans to not cycle???? It's above the radiator but it's under the core support. When i remove the plastic, I see 2 bolts holding it to the underside of the core support.looks like two-8mm bolts. Awe it's an air bag sensor. Anyways, I replaced both the head temp sensor & the cooling fan solenoid. When I disconnect the head temp sensor the fans run continuously.why won't they cycle like normal when the head temp switch is connected? Only other options would be relays & fuses which I think are good??? I need help!!!

Replace the fan relay in the fuse box under the hood. It will be the relay closest to the fire wall. If you take it apart it will be a melted mess. Also be sure to check all of the fuses. It's best to pull them out one by one to look at them and if you have a multimeter check them with that as well.
Also make sure that your engine coolant is full as a dry sensor inside the engine reads a lower temp.
      Good luck to you.
