Glad you 'discovered' Taiping. More visitors should, but I like stepping off the tourist trail. As you say, one rarely encounters other western travelers while in town. I splurge on accommodation when visiting, but in fact the Novotel is only slightly more than US $30 per night for a near 5-star experience. And the hawker center you visited--Larut Matang, I believe--is my favorite in all of Malaysia. Can't wait for August!

We went to Taiping a few years ago. One of our favourite places in Malaysia. We arrived in the pouring rain, but it soon cleared up and it was blue skies for our stay there.
Kuey teow is made from rice flour. Wan Tan noodles which is the dried one in black sauce U ate is egg noodles. In Hong Kong is popular served in soup. Very rare to find dried ones. Fried kuey teow is very popular in Penang. On noodles there's also rice vermicelli basically rice noodles then there's yellow noodles and pan mee , wheat flour noodles. Plenty of varieties of noodles you can find in Malaysia 😂 and plenty of instant noodles too 😂
Go back to that hawker centre and go to stall #63. There you will find a fried koay teow dish that is unique to Taiping. It is fried in a dark sauce with fish balls and char siew is added. One of my favourite go to dishes whenever I'm in Taiping.
My favorite place to go to when I needed to indulge myself in food (though I'm from Penang) and some relaxation away from the busyness of the city life. In fact, it's my dad's hometown and Taiping town is where I spent most of my school holidays esp year end with the family .... I still feel very homey each time I'm there. Lots of good food and places to visit

Chinese Mid-Autumn festival 2023 is just around the corner on September 29, 2023. A symbol of unity, mooncakes are typically savoured with friends and family. While traditional mooncakes are golden-brown and filled with lotus seed paste and sometimes cured duck egg yolks, popularised in the last few years are snow skin mooncakes, covered in a delicate skin made from glutinous rice flour. Whether you prefer traditional varieties or unexpected flavour combinations, we have you covered with our complete round-up of where you can find the best mooncakes in town.

The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival or Mooncake Festival, is a harvest festival celebrated in Chinese culture. It is held on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Chinese lunisolar calendar with a full moon at night, corresponding to mid-September to early October of the Gregorian calendar.[1] On this day, the Chinese believe that the moon is at its brightest and fullest size, coinciding with harvest time in the middle of autumn.[2] The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most important holidays in Chinese culture; its popularity is on par with that of Chinese New Year. The history of the festival dates back over 3,000 years.[3][4] Similar festivals are celebrated by other cultures in East and Southeast Asia. During the festival, lanterns of all size and shapes - which symbolize beacons that light people's path to prosperity and good fortune - are carried and displayed. Mooncakes, a rich pastry typically filled with sweet-bean, egg yolk, meat or lotus-seed paste, are traditionally eaten during this festival.[5][6][7] The Mid-Autumn Festival is based on the legend of Chang'e, the Moon goddess in Chinese mythology.
You can find those "instant" coffee bags in supermarkets everywhere. Guess it is a thing in Singapore and Malaysia LOL. Doubt they use butter to roast though. Most of them use margarine. Most famous fried kway teow is the Penang version. Kway teow soup from Ipoh is very popular cos of their "spring water" said to use to make their kway teow and grow their bean sprouts. That dark soy based noodle is called dry wanton mee with char siew. Char siew has some sweetness from molasses/honey/sugar perhaps all depends on how the vendor makes it😂Is boiled egg wanton noodles not pan fried. Singapore has a Sun Yat Sen memorial hall. He is very popular in this part of the world.

Sun yat sen is a revolutionist in China against communist. He went to Taiwan. In penang island, there is a museum about him. He used penang as a place to plan his move in China and Taiwan.
You may have gotten some of your facts incorrectly. Sun Yat-sen is actually a revolutionist against Qing Dynasty, the Imperialism. He may have visited Taiwan but he surely stayed on and passed away in Beijing in 1925 long before China embraced Communism after Democracy failed to work there.

Bird poop happens. Me, Redondo Beach by a seagull. Right shoulder.
Very nice!
The pickled green pepper is the soul of the dry noodle. 😂 It’s not hot or spicy, it’s sweet and sour taste pickle.
Tourism Board of Malaysia could have done more. Leaving out the 'top three sustainable cities in the world' out of the must visit map is absolute bonkers!
By the way, come again soon
The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival or Mooncake Festival, is a harvest festival celebrated in Chinese culture. It is held on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Chinese lunisolar calendar with a full moon at night, corresponding to mid-September to early October of the Gregorian calendar.[1] On this day, the Chinese believe that the moon is at its brightest and fullest size, coinciding with harvest time in the middle of autumn.[2]
The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most important holidays in Chinese culture; its popularity is on par with that of Chinese New Year.
You are right. Many coffee mill in Malaysia use margarine, However, more expensive local coffee is roasted with butter.😊
I would love to know which are the brands out there that uses butter! Can they be bought from the supermarkets?@@amiryazidali7659

The famous koteyow kangkang. ...still exist ?
Great place where i belong but most of those needed places to be preserved are ignored, damaged , altered the origin. Like Railway station becomes food centres, century old rest house opposite primary king Edward school and hope the market opened after rebuild as original let the market operated as it is and hope not becoming like central market in KL becomes gift stalls etc. And there are many more....
You missed the schools which are some of the oldest in Malaysia.
WELCOME TO MY HOME SWEET HOME TOWN GUYS..
Did you miss visiting one of the oldest prison in Malaysia just opposite the Perak Museum?
