- Project Backmarker B17 EF Dyno and Driving Impressions
By Brian Gillespie and Aaron Gaghagen
We finally got Project Backmarker up and running. There seems to be a power issue when Brian takes it for a spin. Since we have not tuned it yet, a possible solution could be a little time on the dyno. We go to Xact Dyno for Tim Kelly to work his magic. Then it's time to drive! Several issues rear their heads and Brian ponders on if a B18C would be a better fit.

love how a 65yr old can appreciate those hondas. god bless him
Because he was twenty when they came out.
I secondth that ☝️
I have had Hondas since High School. I raced a CR125 and CR250. My Senior year I was a setup mechanic at Apache Honda East in Mesa Arizona.
That 65 year old man helped the Honda community so much. I remember seeing black and white adds in magazines with their old “Superman” logo
@@GodsGunsGlory777 That Super H logo got Hasport in trouble with Honda back in the day. Got busted at SEMA. LOL
I'm 46 still daily my b Swapped and lowered EF (ED6) and love every minute of it!
I’m 19 lol hope I have mine when I’m 46
39 and I sometimes drive my turbo d ek on the weekends 😅
I am 50 and I love my MK5 GTI and my 2K Maxima. We are all car guys at heart.
I'm 41 and drive mine to work and back everyday.. b16 in red hatch 1990.. first oil change is this weeeknd
....oh and yes "old school" VTEC sounds better than most cars these days imo. Your channel is awesome!
Isn't it bizarre that nowadays k20's are considered "old school" lol it seems like yesterday the rsx first came out.
(To me, "old school" VTEC is 90's era and of course the original motorcycle)
Very true! Yeah I'm still in love with mostly 90s stuff lol
One of my favorite videos. Brian driving a slammed ef hatch is amazing. Even if the ride was terrible. It’s awesome to see. I want to be like Brian when I’m older 🙌🏻😎😎
Hahaha! It was so bouncy, but it looks cool at least.
Great content guys. Brian Gillespie is at the top of the pyramid of hondas and swaps as far as im concerned.
Thanks for watching and the kinds words!
Boy do me and you have the same dream car! That is exactly how I want to build another Ef hatch! I owned a black 90 Si hatch for 14yrs that I bought in high school that I ignorantly sold a few years back 😢 I LOVED THAT CAR! Mine had a mini swap in it for years and I blew 5 sohc blocks with the same D16y8 head lol. I finally did a DA Teg B18a1 in it few yrs before I sold her and it was a ripper!!! I've sooooo gotta find another ASAP! Best vid in a long time! 👌
Omg, good memories. This was my first car. I put a B16 in it, and I loved this car to death. Wish I still had it!
Such a great platform.
Right in the feels. What you were saying about the low like and being to old. You will always be a legend.
LOL Don't believe him! Everything except his Ridgeline and CRV are lowered. Backmarker is just a little extreme feeling with the blown shocks.
You're mot much older than me, so your enthusiasm for small cool cars is highly encouraging 👌
It’s easy to have enthusiasm when the cars are this fun.
youre a hero
Wow...memories . I remember owning a dark green 91 si hatch with jdm sir front end . Had the matching jdm b16a motor w lsd tranny. Slammed on tein full coilovers. This was back in '05 . Socal memories . Wow . Thank you for that Bryan . I have another 91 clean title red si hatch sitting in my backyard.. waiting for the motor to be rebuilt in my garage.
Great intro!!! For many this was actually a DREAM CAR in high school. If you know then you know. Cool video!!
It’s pretty timeless. Lightweight, good looking and great handling. Blown shocks notwithstanding. 😆
I have ef track car that has been track car almost all it's life, even has your mounts still in it with an unopened 1st gen b16 that was put in maybe 01 I think, that engine has taken the most insane beating and is still going. It just had brand new paint and looks so fresh and new like right off the dealer. Now in 2023 i'm scared to use it for track anymore, I love it so much and there are just no more parts left, knuckles, hubs cross member etc it's so hard to find anything if it had any wreck. Also it is almost impossible to find another one if I did wreck it. I keep thinking I should cut the front of the cage out but it is all welded in at the a-pillars etc. Even the main hoop covers the top seat belt mounts. If I cut the cage out I could get it plated and put back on the street just to enjoy. I hope I can get walk around video one day to show you 😊
Damn it. There's no other car I miss more than my ED6 with b16a2. These tin cans are just the best
I had the same setup in high school. I'll never forget my neighbors reaction to barely beating his brand new 5th gen camaro ss. 😅
Honestly, they are.
@@FlyDontTrip the SS stands for so slooooow. LOL
@@VTECAcademy super slow 😂
My nabor has a ef im trying to buy to slap my k20z3 into outof my fg2 k24a car. I miss the days when i had my last 91 ef hatch. It only had a jdm d15, but the lsd jdm trans an motor made that car fun. Id put all new bushings and suspension on it and it handled like a go cart 100%. Love them.
I don't know who edited this. But this s*** is straight FIRE. That highway cut. UGH! 😍
Digging that rare b17 period swap. Back in the late 90s/early 2000s use to dislike the ef/da and was eg/dc all day but as time went on had a couple da 93s. I've been on and off with wanting to get a db1 sedan but no where to safely park it
I’ve been searching for a clean db1 from the states, already have db8 and dc5-S to go with the collection
There is no car that moves the blood in my vain more than a EF hatch, I swear it's my fav car in the whole world. Wife got me one for my Birthday before covid a 90 si very ugly to rebuild but after covid with the super spike in cost for absolutely everything I have don't nothing to it just sits there ugly BUT!! thank you very much for filming this. Each EF video I watch keeps my dream alive to have not give up hope that my car will look clean one day to daily drive.
Ya I have one sitting too I just need money and time and somebody to help me that knows how to work with these Honda's
My favorite car ever and the first car I ever owned and according to the dmv I still own it but it’s gone in someone’s backyard or field 😊
OG in an OG ride. cant get no better
I had an 88 hatch with a b16a1 in 99, I miss my old girl.
That's a solid combo!
@@VTECAcademy She wasn't as fast as the bubble backs with gsr motor's but she still gave me a smile every time I drove her.
Hello from Phoenix , New sub . You have a beautiful ef , I miss my ef hatch's , been searching for a si . Currently restoring a eg hatch si
I own a 1993 gsr integra with B17 still a fun car to drive around town every once in awhile
I miss my frost white '92 GSR with B18c5 swap.
Keep up the great work! next generations! see you soon again in California always good times
EF's are my first Honda love when I was in high school. That is one clean EF. I will always have a soft spot for the early 90's Honda even though I'm a Toyota guy.
I also love the fact you have love for these cars.
There’s something about the golden era.
Loved your EF at the Honda Meet. Meant to come back around and talk to you guys more. Catch ya'll at next event.
On another note found an EF locally that still had good parts if you need anything.
I am looking for parts 90 91 ef
Appreciate it!
Nice job bro💯💪🔥
I drive my EG hatch about 2k miles a month. It has a fully built NA B18C1 on Link standalone. What a joy to drive. I'm also in the Phoenix area. Hope to see you around sometime.
Hell yeah!!
I remember this car from back in the day. So glad to see it’s still around!
My first car was 89 CRX HF and I miss that thing 😢😢😢
Beautiful car, I miss them ones I had. Would love to get another one
The 1pc headlights for ef and da make the world of a difference
What a lovely video! Two classics on the road 😊 u look great in that thing my man. Keep the EFs alive.
Hell yeah!
I'm in my 50s, but of the same mentality as this guy. I have an almost mint 91 Si, and, "when I grow up," I wanna be just like Big Daddy here. haha
Man you look so cool driving that thing!
Ahahaha! It does look great rolling, doesn’t it?
I think they’re the prettiest cars ever
Yep I have a 92 GS with a b17 and it took some magic to get the non VTEC chassis to take the VTEC motor. Even with all the right stuff, but when it's right it's golden
Awesome! Thanks for watching.
You made me miss my civic hatch and crx I used to own... and the fact that your 65 still smashin that pedal and driving your dream car....super inspirational. I wish I had a uncle like you.
EF hatches are the best looking hatches imo. I used to have 2 Si's a 90 and 91. One white and black. I miss them so much. I would love to own one again sometime in the near future. Can't really find em anymore. Your EF is so clean, i love it! 🔥 Much respect to you sir...
I just bought a white one too.
Dope EF, love the older Hondas Used to have a 92 DA integra GSR with a b17A1 it pulled and I miss that car
I had a b17 in my 2nd gen gs-r, that car i modified more then any other car I’ve owned to date. ( nothing of mine is stock ever ) . Sold it to a local tuner shop that’s not around anymore, one of the biggest regrets ever. It pains my soul when I think about it 🥹😭😅. Never too old for the low life😂🤜🏻🤛🏻
I had a EF si. Black as a first car. I always wanted the B17 and boost... back when they were available but still rare... these are crazy to see now a days. Awesome to see.
EF Ballade with a ZC and mild mods is still one of the most fun cars I've ever driven
I've got a EK hatch with ZC - Sohc vtec (p08) - viper 4-1 - Cowley mid box into Mugen back box, and it's just a great time all the time. Especially after putting the new clutch in
We have the same dream car! I've got an '89 EF Civic hatch. Would love to do an engine swap on it, drive it for about 10 years, then give it to my son when he can start driving.
I remember seeing this as a project car in Super Street and it inspired me to buy a b18 swapped EF, still miss that car
This is awesome. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
I've had 2 different 1992 DB2 Integra GSRs with the b17a1s, actually have a video of one of them on my UA-cam from like 2011 or somewhere around there. Definitely one of my favorite Honda/Acura's I've owned..a bunch of my friends thought they were just run of the mill DAs and couldn't believe they were GSRs or didn't know those Integra's came in GSR trim. Unfortunately both of them were previously moded a little distastefully and sold them because of the cost to go back to original or OE+ condition.
2! That’s pretty cool. That YS1 transmission from the GSR was really suited for the B16 and B17.
THIS is what I want to be doing at 65.
Hell yeah!
8:05 Good good. 🚗
Yes! More old skool Honda!!!!
Those orange front blinkers must be worth a fortune... I love this gen Civics. Regret selling my '91 EE9 (European EF9) with a B16A1. Cheers guys!
Cheers!!
I had a good ol b17 gsr motor in my civic coupe 22 years ago good times
Love the throw back to Andy’s old plate!
Still running his in front since AZ doesn’t require a front plate.
Need more of this car
Agreed.
B17a's are great engines. 20yrs ago I had two of them on my garage floor after I put a B18c5 in my '92 GSR. I always wanted to put a B17a1 crank and rods in my little Brother's B16a powered 1990 Civic 3dr Si.
The extra 4mm stroke makes torque at all rpms and is as safe at 9k+rpm as any B series engine. The only thing the B17a needs to outperform the R-spec B16B is extra compression and R-spec cams or better along with the required valve springs/retainers. The cable YS1 that came with the B17a1 in the '92 GSR has much closer gear ratios than the 94+ Integra GSR's.
The B16a/B17a blocks are shorter/lighter than the R-spec B16B/B18C5 blocks. I feel the shorter B16a/B17a block is much better suited for the EF chassis.
Nothing sounds like V-Tec on a B series
Love your videos brother!
Thank you!! Appreciate it.
EF is my favorite Honda.
I used to own a 4 dr gsr...it was such a fun car.
Our intern, Carter is looking for an Integra sedan.
I enjoyed it brought me back to my youth
Very nice 👍
BAKMRKR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - Sorry, this is my favorite EF hatchback on the internet, which is why I'm very excited!
Hell yeah! Thanks for watching!
Brian with the MaxBoost! hat is awesome. Loved max boost comics since I was a kid going to parts stores with my dad in the late 90’s and early 00’s
EF 4 EVER
Speaking of unicorn engines, have you guys ever done a B21 swapped Civic?
I know there's not much aftermarket support for those engines, but I just think it would be cool.
Love the roaring sound of the engine. And when vtec hits. OMG!!!
O man that is a gem.
I’ll give you $4,100 for that 😅
Ahahaha!
my dream car too. had one but sold it 20 yrs ago.
Looove these kind of video's! 👍
Thank you!
The EF civics are my favorite, and wow did I list after an EF with a B17 back in the day. Would love to own one some day.
Makes me miss my 2 ef’s i had back in my 20s . I plan on finding one again and building an Awd project
im new to the honda world. i had no idea these b engines sounded so sick!!!
Yeah, I do like the sound once It hits VTEC.
Everyone else wants new mustangs, Hellcats, corvettes, STIs, etc...Im happy with a 90s civic/crx/delsol/prelude with a high revving Bseries, Hseries or Kseries and be 10x happier
I agree totally.
what a beautiful car. i always wanted one with mugen rnr's and itb's
Buddy had a white ef hatch b17 swapped 20 years ago with the ys1 transmission with a upgraded lsd car was completely gutted and vtec hit sooo hard it would eat 3 gallons of gas like nothing. I have always wanted to build a ef the same way
I bought my ef in 2001. Many mods later and I'm still ripping it. Ls/vtec
Hell yeah!
I've thought about getting another old EF hatch. I had one as my first car but didnt know much at the time. It had all sorts of problems but it was a fun car to drive. Small, handled like a go cart, its what made me buy a 2013 Abarth 500.
If you think about it this guy was in his early 20s when vtec was on motorcycle so he kind of grew up with the technology. I knew of vtec in the late 1990s but had no clue what it was and how much power the little engines made
I raced Honda motorcycles in my teens. And was a Honda motorcycle mechanic in the mid 70s while in high school. I got out of the car and motorcycle scene for about 20 years and taught tennis. I started looking hard at the Honda's in 1980 after driving a 1979 Accord LX hatchback. Such a nice car for the time. At the time I had a street legal volkswagen powered sand buggy and then a Type 3 squareback which I liked for their simplicity. Later a friend bought a brand new 1990 CRX Si and I totally started to want to get back into Hondas. My brother who owned a Honda only salvage yard offered to let me build a Honda race car if I went to work for him. From the salvage yard was born Hasport Performance. The rest, as they say, is history.
Beautiful car. Sounds amazing!
I love the seat belts not automatic
I must agree on the ride height. I live in Arkansas and our roads are trashed here. Definitely need a full finger gap at minimum.
Yeah, the blown shocks weren't doing us any favors either.
Vtec definitely hits harder in Bseries motors, sounds better too. I am surprised you are still into modding Hondas, I remember you from the honda-tech days. May Jesus bless you and your family.
An older dude in an EF now thats whats what im talking about.
Yeah that’s a sweet ride!
I love that car. I almost bought my buddy hatch but found out it was abandoned on the side of the road, with no keys and no title. With a broken windshield. Bought me a 2000 civic with a D16 for 1k.
That’s a good deal!
first time to this channel. This is awesome!
This motivates me so much to keep working on my EF. Thank you!
1988-2000 was the golden age RIP Honda (man minimum, machine maximum now)
Nice ride 👍
It looks so great rolling. Once the Mugen dampers are refreshed it will ride as good as it looks.
I dont even own a Honda, but i remember wanting one of these when I was in hs. Sub'd anyway
What wheels are they? They are sexy AF! Nice to see a clean EF still rolling 👍💪
Ol skool Precedo Demons
I miss my 92 GSR!!! Aztec green
If you want a couple more b17 I have 4 of them here in Missouri
Really. That’s awesome. Maybe.
What a beautiful car
This car is beautiful
She sure is clean looking!
My fave vintage of civic as well. Owned a nice SI back in the day myself.
Watching this wish I still have my ef hatch
Totally get that. It’s a classic.
oh I was the 2000th liker of the video :D
also I really appreciate the content and the contagious happy feeling :)
NO shock rebound lollllll, I’m sorry but your old butt looks hilarious in there bouncing up and down 😂… the motor is a sweet freakin gem BUT doesn’t sound very healthy and makes no power - can’t wait to see what you guys have planned for it!
Anyways that thing is SUPER clean, nice find guys!
