I know these interview-type videos get fewer views than the actual performance video, but please do not stop making them: those few of us who watch them greatly appreciate the insight from the musicians.
I agree, these insights from performers keep me coming back for more. Please don't give it up based on metrics. We are listening, be it in Dutch, English, whatever, so long as its about Bach and his music.
Danke danke und nochmal danke dass es Niederländische Bach Gesellschaft gibt. Ich bin immer Tränen nah und muss oft weinen. Was für ein Komponist und was für ein Ensemble. Danke nochmal. ❤❤
"I´m unable to comprehend how someone could write this music"... And this the summary of the whole video... Bach´s Music is really incapable of being understood... Thank you AoB for this wonderful tribute to Bach.
The conclusion at the end of the video- the B Minor Mass represents the "best of J.S. Bach"- is certainly a popular one and if pressed to give a single answer as to Bach's best work I would probably "fall in line" and agree. But if BWV 232 is Bach's best work, it certainly does not TOWER over some other candidates for the same honor, most closely the Matthew Passion, the Motets, the Goldberg Variations or the Well-Tempered Cavalier, the English or French Suites, the solo Cello Suites, some of the early cantatas, and even some of the concertos. That the B Minor Mass- which may very well be the single most excellent musical or even artistic creation ever- does not tower over at least ten or so other works by the SAME composer is proof positive of Bach's jaw-dropping greatness and likely forever distinction as the best composer of all time. The well of J.S. Bach quality is infinitely deep.
This was such a great video. I love this version of the B Minor and it’s so interesting to hear the performers ive been enjoying speak. This channel is the greatest thing on the internet. These musicians should be very proud they’re doing a great service for humanity!
"Goose bumps" - thus many of the musicians here described their feelings towards various sections in this great Mass by Bach. This is also its impact on my personal feelings as one of the audience. Jos van Veldhoven, the conductor, told us that he felt he should not perform this work as a reconstruction, and right he was in this decision - the wonderful result of this NBS performance speak for itself. His last words in this interview are really important for understanding that this magnificent music-work is the summary of "Bach's whole life, his last will and testament". Thanks for this amazing upload.
Thanks to Bach for composing this universal work and thanks to the director, musicians and singers from AllofBach for his humility and good feelings. This Music makes me a better person...
What this brief insight brings out clearly, notably in the references to the Dutch language, here the fulchrum of the whole enterprise, is how music is a force of reconciliation. At the forefront that of Bach in this monumental format. I normally avoid referring to other performances in what I say about one in particular, but here I think it is constructive. The movement of musical reconciliation after the 2nd World War probably started with the cantata performances in the 1950s and 60s under Fritz Werner. I feel this especially today with performances conducted by Masaaki Suzuki. He brought his forces to London in the noughties to perform the B Minor Mass, featuring 3 lady trumpeters in kimonos. More recently, David Chin has conducted the B Minor Mass with local forces in Malaysia. I'm sure he does not do this to make a lot of money or become famous. Currently, performances of Bach on a par with those in Western Europe are cropping up in Russia, including of the B Minor Mass, and resources have clearly been made available to facilitate this. I suspect this reflects the musical taste of president Putin. Perhaps somebody into musical espionage could confirm or deny this. Where the Neds set the pace is in the constant evidence, not least shown in this video, that they have looked afresh at Bach's scores. That freshness involves everybody and is one of their trump cards.
Thank you so much! It's my favourite work by Bach and I'm extremely choosy what version I'll listen to. This is right up there with the most exciting renditions. So grateful to everyone involved and the vision of the director.
Danke, dass ich über UA-cam an Ihrem Projekt teilhaben kann. Hochinteressante Dokumentationen, wundervolle Künstler in phantastischen Aufführungen. Sie haben mich mit Bach infiziert! Dank je well uit Keulen!
What is more amazing, is that as incredible as the Mass is, one could argue that the St John and/or St Matthew are the equals to the Mass, if not even greater.
this Bach performance of trumpets horns singers and drums reminds me being at the party parade an soldiers with their big black hats marching while playing the horns and drums
I only speak English but whenever I hear Dutch I feel like I can almost understand most of it. It must be one of the more closely related Germanic languages.

I'll second that . . .

Yes, I think the same. Love these.

I'm just grateful to exist in the same universe that Bach was in.

Well, it is not only at the pinnacle of western culture, but is the ultimate achievement in artistic expression of all humanity.
100 percent agree.
True, but I fear that many people won't be able to understand it because the music is extremely complex in many places.
@@AnjaHuebel1 What does that matter? That does not detract from the fact that it is one of the supreme examples of human artistic achievement.
@@AnjaHuebel1 yeah doesnt matter, an achievement is an achievement whether or not it is appreciated.
I agree

Possibly the most important documentary about Bach. Anyone who lives with Bach in them loves the minor mass and its Mysteries, thank you again NBS.
Thank you for this delightful window into an exquisite performance of one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written.

And you did not even mention the art of fugue.
"Bach's Mass in B minor is the highest peak in western music" -- Franz Liszt
Beethoven summed it up when he said “He is not Bach (which translates a brook or stream) but Meer (ocean in german)”. Rightly so.

As an Afrikaans speaker, it's quite interesting hearing Dutch.

Very nice insights. It's no surprise though, this channel is gold.
Excellent.
Convincing justification for, and illustration of, the division between soloists and ripienists in the choruses.
Excellent

When you speak English and German, listening to Dutch is the weirdest experience.
I mean, I know it’s completely off topic, but it’s the only thing running through my mind.
I last spoke or heard Dutch 70 years ago. Butting is very useful now in following Dexedrine practiche muziek. Thanks
I'm English but did Dutch as part of my German bachelor's degree. It's a lovely language!

Great!
I got curious about the voice differences between singers in bach´s period and today´s performers. Can someone clarify this please?
