    I'm so glad I'm not the only one who hates having to remove the plastic from the hole saw!
    I save the plastic, in case I need to use it for repairs.

    Marty i have the same boat and when the water fills to the height of where the power wires go through the hull this is where the water gets in the inside hull . I have thought about doing something like that but i couldn`t stand to cut that big of hole in mine so my next alternative was to put a Bilge pump with a automatic float switch but also my boat doesn`t sit in the water everyday . Thanks Marty for putting my mind at ease about drilling a big hole.

    You can make your Scupper self bailing by putting a reverse scoop on it (underneath)
    To describe it... imagine if you were to cut off the bottom of a toy plastic boat and then cut the stern off of that and then glue it around the Scupper hole bow forward. As water flows by it will create suction and any water that's in the boat will actually get sucked out.
    I had that type of drain on my 66 lone star aluminum boat and if you forgot to put in the drain plug. You simply start the boat and take off and all the water got sucked out the bottom and you then put the plug back in. I learned that half way across the lake when I stopped and water came rushing in... I took off back to the dock and it was empty less than half way back. I put the plug in while moving and headed back out to the lake. Someone in the 60's was a smart SOB!

      I found a link... 20 seconds in it shows the drain bottom.

    Very smart Marty! I store my bass raider upside down. And when it's in the truck ready to go out in the morning and it fills up with water from sitting out all night I take a long rubber hose and syphon it out and let gravity do the work

  •  4 роки тому

    Good idea. I'd also add silicone RTV sealant under the top edge of the perimeter trim to keep the water from seeping into the hull pontoons. Less to drain out.

  • @johnmilkent9488
    @johnmilkent9488 6 років тому +5

    Hey that is pretty ingenious! I was thinking about it for a while and thought of a little bit more of a modification. If you could install a check valve and add a 90° fitting to the bottom it would actually suck the water out when you are underway and not let water flow in when stationary. I love how you do modifications on things.

    I have owned my Pelican Bassraider 10e for 2 years and have never had such a problem. Got mine set up with a casting deck up front, a foot controlled bow mount trolling motor, an adjustable swivel deck seat, quick deploy anchor/winch set up, and many other extras. Pelican should not change a single thing about this boat.

  • @marybachmann
    @marybachmann 6 років тому

    3:10 lol That was a good fix. A tarp over it would have just filled up with water. My mooring cover is useless that way, unless I add some kind of tent frame to hold it up. Even my Hobie gets water in the hull, and it HAS scuppers. Condensation, and rain seeps in. The irritating thing about it is that the drain plug is on the back end instead of the front, so you can't put it on end to drain because the rudder is in the way. Maybe I'll drill a hole in the front...

    When you put the batteries in the back and it started filling with water I was hoping you'd fire the motor up because I think if you were moving it would have sucked the water back out but I could be wrong. I know on the back of a lot of boats, example aluminum jon boats have plugs that you can access from inside the boat while you're actually moving and if you fill your boat up with rainwater for example you simply run the motor with the plug out and it will suck the water right out of it. Now I realize those are in the back of the boat which is better for suction but I think there would be still suction on the bottom of the boat possibly somewhat dependent on the angle of the boat.

    Looks like the transom is kinked???
    Also by drilling the hole, doesn’t u run the risk of the floor n subfloor to flex? If so are u not concerned of the weld to crack upon the flexing?

    Very cool! Did you test by filling with water from a hose to see if it drains (on land and in the water)? In our old Boston Whaler, we could have six inches of water ("Hey, who forgot to put the plug in?!") in the boat and as soon as we fired up and started forward it would drain fairly quickly. That is what irritates me with the boat. Thanks for DIY, as I have the stuff to do this and make the boat sea worthy again. I have found that an inch of rain will put more than an inch inside the boat when laying flat (like on the trailer). This will definitely help. tnx- Bill in WTx

    I have a video you can try doing. I have a 8.6 pelican kayak. It's a sit on and not really meant for fishing but that's how I'm setting it up. I've been looking at motors. I still need to test to make sure my kayak can handle the weight on the back because the kayak is to short for a side mount and doesn't trec straight. But this video gave me an idea. What if I was to get a pipe large enough for the motor shaft to fit through and do a center mounted motor like Hobie yaks . Same concept as you scupper hole but bigger . Hey hit me up and let me know what you think.

    I'm surprised that boat isn't foam filled from the factory. You could probably drill a few holes and fill it with A/B foam to prevent it from filling up to begin with.
    Another thought you might wanna look into plastic welding solvents like the SCIGRIP line. No heat required. Takes some practice but it's amazing stuff.
