@@firebladetenn6633 I like to think he's talking about big-hearted vs small-minded people. Big hearted people know that humor can be used to mask pain, so they only laugh when the joke is genuine, and small-minded people only find joy in the misery of others, so their humor tends to be crude and generally unfunny, therefore not counting as humor at all. maybe i'm overthinking it, but that's the way i like to look at it given the ebullience and general joi de vivre of the rest of his performance.
Don's performance was so intense, he needed many days of rehabilitation and rest after filming the "Make 'em Laugh" scene. It is considered by most the best dance scene ever filmed. He choreographed it himself, but never took the credit, which he regretted later when wanting to direct musicals.
Alison Bell -Smoking may have affected his stamina, but it was the CONCRETE floor that did him in. Imagine all the bruises and sore joints after endless rehearsals on that hard surface.
Thanks for your replies. I did not know he was such a heavy smoker, so that would not have helped. Also, Gene Kelly was an extremely hard task master on Donald and Debbie and basically rehearsed and danced them into exhaustion. what a fabulous scene, though!

He also got bruised all over, fell out, and had to be hospitalized for a few days as a result of the stunts performed in this scene. That's probably why we don't see it anymore.
Where did Donald find the energy to do all that and not be completely out of breath. Very much an under rated star but this clip is fantastic and very funny too.
he had to be hospitalised for 3 days after this because of exhaustion, then got told he had to do it all over again because they'd lost the footage. may the man rest in peace as a legend.
He didn't! A lot of that ended up being dubbed over so he could dance. I'm honestly all for the practice. Live singing is normally impressive in person, and it saves a lot of energy that can be used for more takes
It's moments like 3:09 that remind me how O'Connor brought something different to the table while sharing the screen with Kelly. Two entertainers with distinct enough silhouettes yet they'd never cast the other in their shadow.

Such talent by Donald displayed for the best act of this film. He did more clever difficult acrobatic and comedic moves ever seen in a short clip. Great, great performance.
What he said about when doing comedy the world being at your feet is true. Think of how much respect Robin Williams has even years after his death. He spent a lifetime making people laugh. He was respected despite some of his life choices.
Musicals have never really been my thing but the amount of respect I have for performances like this can't be measured. I couldn't imagine how hard this is to do.
simply put…one of the greatest solo comical dance performances ever done by anyone on earth. Incredible. I love it and appreciate it every time I see it.
This scene is just incredible ! The actor is more than an actor. He's at the same time an extraordinary athlete, dancer and clown, and he knows how to sing. In short, he's an acrobat of genius !
Loved Donald O'Connor. He could do it all. Sing dance comedy you name it. Amazing what he could do by distorting his face like that. And how nonchalantly he dances up those walls which is so gymnastic and athletic.
Oh My Sweet Lord, I have now discovered where sir Roberto Gomez Bolaños got his inspiration for amazing performances in El Chapulín Colorado! May God rest their souls in a good place for having made us so happy and having enrichened our lives with beauty and talent ❤
Singin' In The Rain is one of my favorite movies and this has always been my favorite scene. Such a talent and never disappoints. It always puts a smile on my face no matter how many times I've seen it.
It's not so much that we watch these and love and appreciate these geniuses as we think of an era gone by..... it's that that level of artistry and over the top talent is gone now. No entertainer nowadays could even aspire to the heights of these performers.
Donald O'Connor was brilliant in this scene, the music and sound effects also work very well. The fact that he was able to do all of that is amazing and he probably fell down at the end just because of how tired he was.
Donald O'Connor had to be one of the most talented guys EVER in the classic Hollywood era. This guy could do it all -- dance, sing, act, and was a fantastic comedian to boot. And that running-up-the-wall-and-doing-a-flip stunt. . .wow! Too bad we don't have multi-talented actors and actresses like this anymore!
I never heard my granddad laugh so hard as when watching this scene. I remember trying to imitate a lot of it as a kid too (for example, running in a circle while lying on the floor).
I had such a hard time believing Don could contort his face like that after hitting the brick wall. And that quickly!!! Could that possibly have been real? But the entire song is exactly this from start to finish. The whole song comes at you so fast your senses simply get overloaded and you're left agape in awe! What brilliance!!!
Everyone who went to see this classy movie (my parents' generation) remembered the Make 'Em Laugh routine with the rubber-legged Donald O'Connor, surely as great a hoofer as Gene Kelly.

A lot of the rest of this movie (despite being fantastic and classic) is very of it's time, it resounds less with a current audience - but this will ALWAYS hit!
I think it's in the script. Gene was a bit of an egotist. As far as Fred is concerned he was basically a ballroom dancer. Not all the time, but, most of the time, what Mr. O'Connor did wasn't in Mr Astaires bag of tricks.

The scene that put Don O’Connor in the hospital for a couple weeks

The fact that that entire sequence was done in only 10 shots is just brilliant.
