  • Gene’s Trail in Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area is a 2.6 miles roundtrip trail with an average time of 1.5 hours. It is a moderate trail with 300 feet of gain.
To access this trail, turn off Charleston Blvd. (SR-159) and onto Calico Basin Road. Follow Calico Basin Road for about 0.4 miles then pull off and park near the right-hand side of the road. A large black trailhead sign marks the beginning of the trail.
This in-and-out trail travels across the open desert and highlights the eastern portion of Calico Basin. Hikers will gain and decline over 300 feet in elevation, allowing for great views looking back towards Calico Basin and out towards Las Vegas. Eventually the trail merges with the Kraft Mountain Loop Trail in the northern end of Calico Basin. Look for all kinds of different yucca plants and cactus along this trail!
