Was there in mid February of 1979! It was a great warm clear sunny day. Took pictures of the damn. Took the damn tour all the way down in the elevator. Saw it all. Dark and cool in some areas I remember. There was a movie of the damn being built in a room down there. The cost to do it all was 50¢ for the tour, free parking on the damn itself. And 55¢ a gallon gasoline 109 octane to get there from Henderson NV. A dirt cheap experience back then. Forget about it now. Nothing free or cheap or even reasonable now. It's a crap hole. Hi Don, I began driving commercially in the '70's and had to retire due to health 4 yrs ago. I went this way 2-3 times a week in the '90's and 2000-2001... until 9/11 shut it down. Just as someone already mentioned, it wasn't more than a simple 2 lane all the way from Henderson to Kingman. I think 9/11 may have created the conditions for building the bridge. Dragging a 48' trailer around those tight turns going down to, and up from the dam, made for some hair-raising moments. Last thing you wanted to do was squash the hood of a station wagon with a family in it! People would oo and ah so much, they wouldn't be paying attention to their road. Meanwhile, you'd be in the middle of a convoy of trucks doing maybe the same thing... sigh...😮. I went across going north a few years after 9/11 in a rental car, where they stopped everyone to check for... who-knows-what. Only time, though. Otherwise, it was always a 18 wheeler. The 53' trailers were gaining popularity too and I suspect this would have been all but impossible to drag across the dam with all those tourists AND trucks... hence the bridge. Maybe not as scenic, but MUCH more efficient. Although all the roundabouts are frustrating and the multitude of roads since then. But it was nice to see it again via your video. One thing never changes: the stark vision of all that hard rock and how man has shaped his world! 😊

@@wearethelandrovers9014 Without doubt the Hoover dam is impressive also, but it was finished in April of 1931 and the much larger Grand Coulee dam was started in 1933. The reason that you don't hear this about both dams and their connection to each other is that some feel that it might diminish the grandeur and pride that many have of the Hoover dam, knowing that it was also a prototype for a much larger dam to be built soon afterwards. Both structures are impressive and we should be proud of both dams.
@@markpatterson5250 Don't know where you are getting your information but it's wrong. The winning bid to build the dam was submitted by a consortium named Six Companies, Inc., and construction began in March of 1931. When two of four water diversion tunnels were completed, the river was rechanneled in November of 1932. This provided the dry riverbed needed to build the dam on. A lot more work happened over the next THREE years and the final block of concrete was poured in 1935. On September 30 of 1935, a crowd of 20,000 people watched President Franklin Roosevelt commemorate the completion of the dam. Very good post, congratulations. I live in the area (Boulder City). Let me add a small detail. The road across the dam dead ends once you pass the Overlook Gift Shop. There is ample room to turn around, but you need to retrace your drive. His post is just great, lots of details. One more thing. There is a security checkpoint. I am not sure it lets you pass if a weapon is in your car. I don't pack, so I am not sure. They may take it and hand it back when you return. Nevada has an open carry law, so a lot of people out in the desert pack a gun. Almost have to, it is very lonely out there. The bridge is well worth a short walk. It has its own parking lot. It is one of the tallest bridges in the U.S. From the bridge the dam looks like a toy. If you are lucky you can see a jumper ending it all.
@@thenevadadesertrat2713 You're absolutely right! Thank you so much for sharing with our community. These are are 100 percent spot on details
For someone driving a Mercedes, I might have thought you would be more insightful, as to how we might like to see what we came here to see. Nope, you just parked that car and let us out, while I'm sure YOU got to enjoy everything!
My apologies you felt that way. I will make another trip out there soon. What would you like to see there?
@@vegasdon Well, let me see. Oh, first of all, thank you for being understanding. Hmm, I think it would be nice to see the water spraying out if possible. It would be good to get an idea of how far it goes down if you're viewing from the top. Maybe you could take an elevator down and get a shot of the dam while looking up and around. BTW~ I did enjoy the drive out. I do wish though, you had a Rolls Royce hood ornament or Cadillac crest. These seem to make a bolder impression. Mercedes is so business-like and sort of plain, in comparison. If we're not seeing the interior of the car, how would we know the difference if you just put a Rolls Royce ornament there? I, for one, would love to enjoy a scenic drive video, while looking over the hood, at a Rolls Royce "Spirit of Ecstasy." Well, "without writing a book," this should do for now. Thanks for your time!
Thank you so much, James! I really appreciate you. Maybe one day I can afford a Rolls. That would be awesome! I'll see if I can get down to the bottom to do a shot looking up, my friend
@@vegasdon I hope so. I wish SOMEBODY could, that does these drive videos. So far, I have not found a really good, time expansive, scenic drive video, from a Rolls Royce. Imagine how impressive that would be. I just want to sit back and relax, with my imagination to carry me away, in a Rolls Royce motorcar! Doesn't that sound like fun?
It does. I'd also have to find someone locally who works on them, too. That can be hard to find
I went over it before that bridge got put on 53' trailer was rubbin the guard rails in some of those tight turns
@@louismartinez4467 Ouch! I do not envy you taking that turn, my friend
@@vegasdon it made me a little nervous you have head about " white knuckling" the steering wheel it would have been nothing except there was traffic going the other way
@@louismartinez4467 Yikes! You have got nerves of steel, my friend
@@vegasdon that was a long time ago and now like I say new bridge going over the top
@@louismartinez4467 Right on, my friend
