Black Republicans: They Exist(ed)

  • Did Republicans lead the charge in electing Black politicians? We don’t need to know who you’re voting for but we are interested in how the end of the Civil War meant the start of Black people in US Government and the resilience required by these OG Black politicians to occupy space in a government that was very divided on whether owning people was bad. Decisions made during Reconstruction (for better or worse) still affect the United States and its citizens today. #ReconstructionPBS #SayItLoudPBS #BlackRepublicans

CORRECTION: The 14th Amendment was approved AFTER the Civil War not during. At timecode 3:30 Evelyn says it was ratified during, by 1868 the Civil War was already over.

Juneteenth as a historical day it's a wonderful day but it does not need to be as a holiday because I would be fine if it was just a holiday that everybody celebrated but they the Democratic party want black folks who vote for them to consider themselves separate from the rest of the Americans and to have their own Independence Day when as Americans we all should celebrate the 4th of July because we're dividing the country when we have to have different national holidays of freedom for different races of people that does not bring Americans together and that cannot unify black white and Latino Americans together if there's a national anthem for black folks and then one for white folks and the national anthem for Indian America until recently was all about being united the United States but we cannot be United truly if we have a separate anthem and a separate holiday for our freedoms or a separate pledge of allegiance or what have you it's a very bad idea history shows us that you cannot bring a country together if they have so many divided things put the government wants this so they can control black folks and make white people feel bad about themselves even though we all need to come together as United Americans (if we don't do that) then we might as well not call ourselves the United States of America because you cannot be United when everybody has their own separate thing on the same day (and yes it's true the black folks were not free back in 1776 and it took about 80 years for slavery to be abolished however the facts still stands that these early Republicans who were mostly of African-American descent understood the promises of America even though the promises had not been lifted up to yet through segregation and Jim Crow these black intellectuals in the Republican party understood that we cannot be United if we let the government divide us.

It’s a prelude. So called progressives selling black people out for gain. Doesn’t matter what the party title, black people have always been faced with choosing a lesser of two evils. That comes as a result of never being intended on having a say in the way a country runs or citizenship. The Compromise of 1876 is one of the most important moments in black history and most blacks really don’t know what it was.

Seriously. Sometimes I wonder what could have happened if Andrew Johnson had been removed from office after his impeachment. They were literally ONE VOTE away from getting rid of him. The guy seriously had it out for the Freedman's Bureau and Reconstruction in general. Here's my favorite quote from a contemporary: "Sir, the bloody and untilled fields of the ten unreconstructed states, the unsheeted ghosts of the two thousand murdered negroes in Texas, cry, if the dead ever evoke vengeance, for the punishment of Andrew Johnson." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impeachment_of_Andrew_Johnson

Reconstruction was the era at which it shows that the emancipation proclamation was nothing but a war tatic. The US is so quick to give Confederates or “traitors” their rights back that black ppl have to lose theirs. The Compromise of 1876 if you look at the conditions basically says that black ppl are now again in the hands of white southerners. Republicans unified the country but didn’t give freedom to all. That’s why when the republicans say we freed the slaves I look at them like you basically sold us out afterwards. This reason example right here is why I grew up with my great uncles and aunts always telling me to never trust white ppl.

So sad how when I came to the U.S I was told that I have to vote democrats always and voting otherwise would make me a sellout or racist. I thought “umh if I can’t vote a certain group because of my skin color, isn’t that racism itself?” You see, when blacks started voting democrats from the 70s a lot went down. From the “war on drugs, to war on poverty, etc...all these democratic policies led mass incarceration of black men hence high rate of absence of fathers in black homes from 11% in the 70s to around 75% today. When families collapse, communities collapse. Black people don’t need any more welfare checks, they need better schools, stable families, role models besides athletes and celebrities( not that those are bad).
A black kid who grows up in a stable family/community is most likely to succeed and do well in life while the opposition is true. There are exceptions to everything but all I can say is, think for yourself, you are not a race, you are an individual human being

6:45 THANK YOU FOR SAYING THEY WERE MIXED/ MULTIRACIAL!!!! Mixed erasure IS a thing - a BIG one - and this is THE FIRST TIME I have ever heard my people get casual respect! Multiracials, like me, are constantly white/ brown/ black washed and it's SUPER annoying to the point of causing actual harm to our community, identity and health. THIS right here is what will keep me subscribed. #representation

Great video! I would run for city council or school board member. These are important positions in local government.
I often wonder how life would have been for Black Americans if US government stayed in the South to protect the Black citizens. Once they left, all hell broke loose for Black people. I personally believe we would have made a lot of progress.

Amanda panda her membership in the BDS movement. The BDS wants to boycott Israel, comparing them to NAZIS! Jews are Nazis in their brains. They support a one state Palestinian solution, while failing to mention that Palestine’s first leader was one of Hitler’s greatest allies. They also failed to mention that their current leader idolizes Hitler and wants to completely destroy the Jewish faith and everyone who practices it.

Just of the top of my head, I would run for Seattle City Council and I would center my focus around the historical pan-African epicenter in Seattle, the Central District. I'd address our city-wide housing crisis, and our egregiously high (3rd in the country behind NYC & LA) and yet somehow still rising homeless population. I would abolish the city's encampment raids. I would direct finances into the various communities within the Central District centering around Black owned business, affordable housing, historical public schools, and civil infrastructure. I would have established top-tier city funded abuse rehabilitation shelters for women and children, no matter their citizenship status. And I would find all of this by taxing the bricks off of Amazon, Boeing, Microsoft, and other big ticket company's based in the city of Seattle. What is I don't think I was here I would also establish a hefty wealth tax for the financial elite and everything they own in Seattle.
It's prolly do something like that.

Yeah. I just learned that maybe 6 months ago. Which is weird because I thought I studied social history in undergrad and law school. This whole time I was thinking of the 13th amendment of the United States Constitution and somehow assumed the Emancipation Proclamation provided for the same freedoms. Well hey, we learn and we grow, hopefully. Peace out ✌️

I was absent the day my AP history teacher posed the question, since the EP only applied to States that did NOT surrender, what would have happened if the Confederacy waved the white flag early, no military defeat required?
So wish I'd been there to hear the answers to that thought experiment.
