Glad to see Kenny realize he was wrong about McGucket. Also, McGucket's story hit me hard when I first watched the show. The way he ruined his own life without even knowing it is heartbreaking. I'm glad he can be somewhat his old self again.
I’ve been told I was weird for doing it but I had a genuine tear drop at the line “you can’t break what’s already broken” in the insane voice of McGucket. Even worse to learn his history right after
By the end; he found new blend of of both logic and madness
Did you notice that McGucket's memories actually _explain_ why he had a bandage on his beard?
He got a bandage on his chin and a cast on his arm, when he was involved in an accident… and then he forgot all about it. He never had the cast taken off -which is why he's been wearing it for 30 years - and his beard grew out from underneath the bandage, carrying it along. That's some _killer_ adhesive on that bandage, though. No wonder it always feels like you're ripping your own skin off, when you try to remove them.
He also started questioning things before seeing his memory. Fun bit of character writing. As soon as someone actually paid attention to him he was ready to face his past.
Finally Kenny has to answer for all the unjustified McGuckett SLANDER! In. Yo. FACE.
I know right? McGucket would’ve been a perfectly good statue!
To be fair, he tried to eat Soos.
My dad had a similar thing XD he hated mcgucket at first
@@valentinkambushev4968 i mean, the dude went completely insane, i dont blame him
Notice how his bandaid actually served a purpose first when he had it just on his chin but then he forgot he had it and it stuck to his beard as it grew
A few spoiler-free things,
1. The 3 things Stan lost in the machine come out of a portal in a Rick and Morty episode.
2. The bandage Stan puts on his hand stays there for the next few episodes to show this is still happening. Cool little background detail.
3. Alex Hirsch made an entire hoax that Mcgucket was the author trying to distract from the real author theories. (DO NOT LOOK IT UP YET IT HAS SPOILERS FOR THE REAL MYSTERY!!!)
In case no one brings it up. Reminder that someone posted a leak to 4 chan which showed that McGucket was the author of the journals, causing Alex Hircsh to get upset on twitter. After this episode aired, he revealed that it was all just a big elaborate prank by him.
Not even an elaborate prank, but just a well made diversion. The best part is that Alex also leaked a real still image of Gideon Rises alongside this fake one which gave it more credibility.
It wasn't just a prank, some fans were correctly guessing the identity of the author, so Alex made the fake leak in order to muddy the waters a little bit for the fan theories.
@@littlebigbunnyrabbit9520😅
@@emilyprice178 'Cause, by his own admission, he realized that he didn't really present any alternatives/red herrings in-show.
I think one of my favorite things about Gravity Falls is how complex the characters are. I mean, they didn’t *have* to give McGucket a backstory.
But they *did*
The code at the end is as follows: "Gideon's tantrums. Misspelled Tattoos. Shandra's rejections. Societies views. A fear of witches. A life of regret. These are the things they try to forget" As you can see, each phrase is related to one of the society members.
The order on which each one belongs to as well.
1,Bud gleeful,
2,Giant tattoo guy,
3,Toby,
4,Guy who married a woodpecker,
5,Farmer guy, (callback to the ep,
time traveler’s pig)
and 6,not sure
@@griffinhamm7783 6 would be mcgucket
@@Fable869 or Ivan
Kenny is about to feel real bad for everything he was saying about McGucket.
The cult never came after Dipper and Mable, or the rest of the main characters, because they kept their findings a secret, and never tried to report them. Perhaps they were questioned by some of the townspeople, who were secret members of the society beforehand but said nothing. The first thing the Journal said when Dipper found it was "Trust No One." It's also another reason why Stan acted all oblivious about the supernatural, not just to protect the twins, but to avoid being a target of the cult.
I feel the implication was always they only come after the people getting openly traumatized about the weirdness, and since dipper and everyone is fine with the weirdness they had no reason to get wiped
Except multiple people in the society already know that Dipper goes after supernatural phenomena, including Toby and Gideon's dad. For that matter, why didn't Gideon's dad ever erase Gideon's memories?
I agree with the person above me that they definitely only go after those who are traumatized. Their goal is to help people forget, not to keep the supernatural phenomenon a secret.
@@milesparker557I remember in the book it mentioned that the whole society used it to erase random things from themselves, and bud gleeful would erase gideon’s temper tantrums. so it’s likely he didn’t remember anything bad gideon does most of the time. maybe even effecting his whole perception of gideon
@@seesawseesaw Wait but if he could use the memory gun on himself or others, why didn't Bud Gleeful use the memory gun to wipe Gideon's memories of trying to uncover the secrets of Gravity Falls and take over the town? That way, they all could be a happy family together and more importantly, Gideon never gets his hands on Journal 2 and bring Bill back to Gravity Falls
@@gauravagochiya4218 we don’t rly know that bud knew anything about what gideon was doing- constantly erasing his tantrums, he probably thinks gideon was pretty normal and didn’t remember all the evil scheming. it’s why he’s so casual about everything gideon does or says most of the time
“you can’t fix what’s already broken” talking about his mind, this episode and the concept of just completely losing yourself always makes me feel so bad. Love this show and how they can make you feel for all the characters
*"you can't break what's already broken"
time for kenny to have an arc XD
seriously tho , even before this episode i always kinda liked mcgucket and his unhinged personality so this is one of my favorite episodes because it finally shows that we are not the crazy ones for liking him and he actually is a great character
Kenny: It's gonna be a gag.
Me (a veteran): Oh, you innocent child 😏
McGucket was someone that I assumed was just a one-note character whose whole schtick was being a weirdo, so him having a backstory this tragic and integral to the plot was extremely surprising. Rewatching this with you guys has made him such a tragic and interesting character, and seeing Kenny slandering him just made the anticipation for the reveal grow.
Kenny officially on his respecting McGuckett arc lol
As I've said on several react videos for this episode, I always saw McGucket's reveal of who he was compared to his current self as a metaphore for substance abuse. He had a traumatic experiance and indulged in 'something to make him forget', but the extensive use did serious damage to his mind. It was only by confronting the source of his issues that he was able to begin the healing process.
Poor McGucket. He lost his memories for 30 years and his past stories was very traumatizing. The Blanchin song was pretty catchy
🎵🎵🎵😱😱😱🤣🤣🤣
And now you both have some answers about why McGucket is the way he is. His wacky, morally questionable town kook acts become a lot more tragic once you realize what he was before and what he did to himself to forget about what he was involved in.
Also, another fun fact time!
The existence of the Blind Eye Society was actually hinted at in a series of animated shorts released between seasons 1 and 2. The shorts in question were collectively called "Mabel's Guide to Everything" and "Dipper's Guide to the Unexplained." Aside from being more peaks into the Pines Twins and Gravity Falls' weirdness, the one focused on Dipper also featured end credits codes with artwork similar to those in the episodes of season 2. When properly arranged the art reveals the symbol of the Blind Eye Society.
The code is in the red letters of the combined art. When deciphered it reveals this message:
"I WAS SO BLIND. HE LIED TO ME. THE DARKNESS IS NEAR."
I know you've been told before, but get ready. The next few episodes are going to be an absolute wild ride.
You guys sure loved to hate on McGucket. And to be fair, I was likely just as bad before this episode.
But what went on here, forever changed how I view him.
Before this episode, I always saw the crazy hilbily that somehow got levels in the Artifisor class.
But after this episode, I now only ever see the brilliant mind wrecked by trauma and self-destruction.
And I only saw it once he finally found the road to recovery.
Context is the window of how you view a person, and I've seen it change my views both ways.
This is one of my Top 10 episodes in the series. It's a big push on the plot, but it's also some great character development.
In that regard, McGucket is like THAT character from Adventure time, who I am not going to name 'cause they might react to Adventure time.
@@valentinkambushev4968
Oh damn, you're right.
McGucket is the vanilla appetizer version of that character you're talking about.
Also, McGuckett taking the memory wipe for Dipper shows that while he lost parts of his mind, his heart was never in the wrong place. He's never actually done anything with the intention to hurt people. He cares.
And last point, this gives interesting context to episode 2. He made a robot sea monster to get the attention of his son, but we're then shown that a real one that looks very similar can be found in the lake. Perhaps McGuckett has seen it before, and not all of his memories were completely gone?
15:40 Those supplies exit one of the portals in Rick and Morty
Kenny has been bulling McGucket constantly calling him crazy and not to be trusted with children (the last one’s kinda true…) but this will help Kenny under, he was originally a guy.
WAR IS OVER! KENNY HAS SEEN THE ERROR OF HIS WAYS AND I NO LONGER HAVE TO LISTEN TO MCGUCKETT SLANDER IN SILENCE! FINALLY! In all seriousness, I have always loved this episode and it completely shifts the view of McGuckett from odd background character to fleshed-out side character! He's definitely someone to keep track of and a fantastic example of just how brilliant this show is. Him being the author was a popular theory around the time and this episode managed to both justify fans' theories of him being more important than originally thought while also subverting expectations and confirming that he was not the author. Super excited for a couple weeks from now when another side character gets similar treatment in my favorite episode of the whole show!
Yes! Was waiting for this episode. Makes sense why Muguckett is so good with technology.
Fun fact, the mug pen and notebook that go into the machine, also appear popping out of a portal in rick and morty
-Ice King- McGucket
btw there is a easter egg in rick and morty infinite rick episode where in one of the portals you can see that the pen mug and notebook that flew into the portal at the end of this episode comes out one of the portals in the infinite ricks episode
We're so close. 💜
alright I'm caught up on cryptograms. I love this episode so much. the reveal of mcgucket was SUCH a good twist I love seeing someone watch it for the first time again. blew my MIND the first time. looking back it makes SO MUCH sense. it also explains the weird things around town happening and no one remmebers it or addresses it... but also as a point after this episode they DO remember it! we're heading into the final act of the show and now things are getting crazy!!!
Cryptograms!
the weird symbols decode to: "IF MY SUSPICIONS ARE CORRECT, THIS IS THE WORK OF FIDDLEFORD. DOES HE REALLY HAVE TO GO TO SUCH GREAT LENGTHS TO FORGET?"
At the end of Old Man McGucket's memories, he says "YROO XRKSVI! GIRZMTOV," and forms a triangle over his eye with his fingers. He is actually speaking in Atbash, and when translated he says "BILL CIPHER! TRIANGLE," hinting that Bill Cipher may have had something to do with McGucket's past. He said this again in a few episodes later in "A Tale of Two Stans."
During the ending credits, there is a cryptogram that reads "MXNGVEECW MW SLAWW. SUL FPZSK MW SOJMRX." Using the vigenère cipher, it translates to "IGNORANCE IS BLISS. BUT BLISS IS BORING." Keyword: ERASE, found on the spine of the triceratops.
The page section revealed at the end of the episode says, "17-15-20-19-9-10'5 4-23-10-4-6-3-11-5, '11-15-5-5-8-19-12-12-19-20, 4-23-4-4-9-9-5," on the top left, "23 18-19-23-6 9-18 1-15-4-21-16-19-5, 23 12-15-18-19 9-18 6-19-17-6-19-4," on the top right, "5-16-23-10-20-6-23'5 6-19-14-19-21-4-15-9-10-5, 5-9-21-15-19-4-25'5 2-15-19-1-5," on the bottom left, and "4-16-19-5-19 23-6-19 18-9-6-17-19-4" on the bottom right. After using the combined cipher, it translates to "GIDEON'S TANTRUMS, MISSPELLED TATTOOS, SHANDRA'S REJECTIONS, SOCIETY'S VIEWS, A FEAR OF WITCHES, A LIFE OF REGRET, THESE ARE THE THINGS THAT THEY TRY TO FORGET." Each of the forgotten memories corresponds to a different member of the Blind Eye Society (and one ex-Blind Eye, McGucket).
It is understandable why Kenny hated McGucket but every time he mentioned it all I could think of was this episode. You have no idea how hard it was for me to not spoil things. I might have had similar feelings about McGucket except I actually suspected all along that he was the Author and had mental problems from old age; and I was so close I couldn't help but be proud of myself and LOVE this episode! I know that crazy genius's are a thing but still it felt like McGucket was too much a genius and too much of a significant character to not have a major role and it felt too cheap to say he is just crazy for no reason and he can invent things just because. I didn't even care that he was only the assistant of the author it is close enough. This also shows Gravity Falls giving so much more world explination than most cartoons that just use the trope that if you are not a main character then you are oblivious for no reason. But this shows the reason there is a legit reason why people don't realize Gravity Falls is unusual. In fact I suspect that poor Soos and the oblivious cops got their minds erased multiple times. Then at the begining of season 2 the agents didn't believe Dipper at 1st but they did notice when there was significant evidence because they are not from Gravity Falls and this society doesn't have a chance to get to them.
this episode was amazing. one of my favorites of gf for how fun and well supplied it is of information about the author and the mystery surrounding him and makes you strongly wonder what his whereabouts are, also reveals why the townsfolk ignored many of the supernatural activity happening in real time for years. for the record this episode reminded me of another character who also lost his mind for his research and was pretty much misjudged and wronged for how miserable he ended up living as a result, the parallels are INSANE. it is all so tragic man...
the creators of this show and rick and morty are friends, those three items you see get sucked into the portal at the end come out of a portal on rick and morty
15:39 Fun Fact: The items he lost here got teleported to the "Rick and Morty" universe.
If you find the right episode in "Rick and Morty" you can actually see those exact same items fall out from a random portal.
I know im a little late, but i had to tell you guys this in almost every episode in the end there is a secret code like in the sock opera code where it said: Dont forget about the real puppetmaster. I would recommend to watch the video raar maar waar where he completly explains evry meaning behind the weard lettsers in every video. I hole you guys could make a video about this😊😊
Anyone remember the Golf War episode where McGucket woke up on the mini golf course but didn’t remember how he got there? Now we know how and why.
I’d use that memory erasing gun for shocking plot twists and jump scares in movies and TV shows. Like Jaws, Knives out, 24, and much more. That way my mind could be blown away all over again🙂
Curious fact. Theres a canon conection beetwen Gravity Falls and Rick And Morty. At the end of the episode we see that Stan drops his notebook and mug through a portal; while in an episode of Rick and Morty we see how precisely those objects come out through an interdimensional portal that Rick opens while escaping.
Finally the McGucket hate can end!
WE’RE FINALLY INTO THE MEAT OF THINGS
Omg I've been looking forward to this episode since the moment they first saw McGucket
You need to pick up Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated after this, it is very similar
the lore & storyline in mystery incorporated is impeccable, they would love it.
I don't think they explain it so you should know that the laptop "property of F" is Fiddleferd McGucket's
I was waiting for this reaction to this episode since the beginning! Kenny was almost every time giving a very low rate about McGucket. Now, it's time for retribution! 😁🥲
edit: And it was priceless to see how dramatically view on McGucket has changed on Kenny and Montana. Now, the show is on a ride to the top. It'll be getting only better and better. We all wait to see your reaction to the greatest episode of all when the most crucial question will be solved. That episode is one of the best in history of animation in my opinion. 🙂😇
Also it's worth to mention that it is really good that they didn't destroy the memory wipping gun. It'll save a lot of people in the future, not saying more to not spoil too much... 😉
I LOVE how this episode actually explains why Gravity Fallers are so weird, stupid, and ignorant! Usually it's just a 'that's the way it is. Town X's peoples are just plot contrived idiots', but this series is actually less insulting to the audience and lets us know 'no, they're real people. There's a reason for this.'
I was waiting for this reaction of Kenny. The McGucket needs respect, not hate. Looking forward to more McGucket lore for Kenny to react
The blind eye doing the Scp's works
This episode makes me thing of drug addiction and how people use drugs for coping with challenges and problems. It majes me truly sad because I've seen family members become McGuckett-like persons due tonthem not having healthier coping mechanisms.
mcgucket is my favorite character I love him so much
So remember in the puppet episode, bill menyioned he would give a hint if dipper makes the deal, brwaking the laptop is the hint because dipper eventually found it in this episode
The show intensifies from this very episode
To Kyle: He got Ice King'd!
Don't spoil it!
