    I picked up one of these from a USMC combat vet that fought on Iwo Jima . Said he took it off a guy that tried to get up close and personal with it only to be stopped by another Marine with a flame thrower. It looks kinda "rough" . But it's a treasure to me cause I got it from it's second owner.

      Sounds like a great find. Sad to think about all of the knowledge we are losing as that generation leaves us

      @@pointynotsharp Indeed....I spent a couple of hours talking with him at a gun show back in the mid 80's. He had a very pristine M-98k with Luftwaffe markings on it. I bought it too. He had no immediate family that was interested in any of his stuff. The M98k belonged to his brother, who had passed away, that fought in Europe in WW2. He has since passed away too, but his stories on the combat there will stay with me always.

    Good day, I just want to ask how rare or expensive are Type 30 Japanese bayonets without fullers? Are they considered last ditch bayonets because they have no fullers?

    • @pointynotsharp
      @pointynotsharp  2 роки тому +3

      They are certainly much harder to find, as for price.. that varies from country to country, by condition and how motivated people are to buy them. I would certainly call them last ditch

      @@pointynotsharp I just asked because I saw one for sale for 140$ USD here in Philippines. For local standards its a bit expensive, but I'm not sure how to gauge that price. It's a fullerless bayonet with a metal scabbard.

      @@pointynotsharp I'm just curious if 140$ USD is cheap by international standards for a last ditch bayonet?

      Regarding my question about last ditch bayonets "Are they considered last ditch bayonets because they have no fullers?". I was told that yes they are considered last ditch bayonets. The reason is that at the later stages of the war, when Japan was desperate enough to start cutting corners and skipping steps in order to produce weapons faster as long as the product is good enough to do its job, its a last ditch weapon.

    That scabbard is wood, not bamboo. There is some bamboo scabbards out there, but they are extremely rare. I've seen pictures of 3 and one of those I own. Also some later war ones were made with a quillion, like the the one on the bottom you own.

    Thank you for the wonderful video.
    There are many variations of the 30-year bayonet depending on the manufacturing period and factory. I recently found one of the earliest 30-year bayonets with the serial number stamped on the top of the grip. I have uploaded a video so please take a look.

    I went to a local military museum where I live and I was talking to the owner about everything history related. He told me to hang on a minute and when he returned he handed me a type 30 bayonet in its scabbard. He said he got it from a WWII vet who found it in the sand on either Okinawa or Iwo Jima

    Thanks for another useful video. I have a type 30 with one of the worst quality blades I've seen, only marked with the three interlocking 0's. From the blade quality, weak spring, poor finish and lack of any other marking I assumed it was late war but it came in a metal scabbard and has a quillion even if it and the guard are rather thin and not well finished. On balance I still think its late war. I'd love to have a better made example just for comparison. Regards from Tas.

    That's a last ditch scabbard , but I don't think that is a last ditch bayonet .
    Last ditch bayonets don't have hooked quillions , just a straight crosspiece . And the pommel wouldn't have a birds head , just a straight rectangular bar .

      But, what would you think is the deal with that one retaining a quillon that has not been detailed and refined like the first two pre/early-war examples?
