Yes Spenser. This is what true filmmaking is. Not just shooting a shallow DoF and applying LUTS to things to be "cinematic". Being truly cinematic means considering every aspect of every shot, actually having some form of pre-production and planning, and shooting with the final edit in mind. Really love that this isn't a "quick fix solution" like throwing a lut on footage is. This involves planning, consideration, and intentionality. That's filmmaking, as far as I'm concerned. Keep it up man. Favourite youtuber at the moment
Dude, I just found you earlier and I've been binging your videos all day today! My BMPCC 4K is arriving in the mail tomorrow and I'm excited for it, so I've been watching your videos and getting motivated to see what this camera is capable of accomplishing.
I thought this would be a post production video but it was so much more important. It was getting it right in camera with simply planning ahead. I’m always learning a new way of looking at things, thank you for what you do
Thanks for posting this video. My big takeaway was driving a color palette/wardrobe for mood. I’m working on a project with a “florist” type character, and now I’ll look to suggest a green/matched color blouse when shooting in front of a heavy green ivy backdrop with color pop from flowers. Love watching so many different content creators’ perspectives and putting together the best practices. Good stuff.
Best filmmaking tutorials on UA-cam in my opinion. Thank you as always!
Yet again: so interesting and insightful. Can’t wait to see what you come up with next 👍🏼
I go back and forth with using a lut or not. It's constantly evolving for me as I learn more and see videos like this one!
I'm actually surprised that this channel isn't at 1mil subscribers as yet. Love the detailed info. Subscribed 💯
Love that color pallet tip. Such a good idea to incorporate before you actually start recording 👍
"I remembered that I have some friends"
Must be nice
I really appreciate the deep dive into set planning for color, these are the things we take for granted all too often, but they make all the difference in the finished image. I am totally going to redesign my youtube set after watching this to bring in the colors I want for my channel brand and the feel of my videos. Thanks for the reminder on color theory and the importance it plays in set design. Love your content man!
These are always so helpful! Would love to see your list of people (DPs) you follow.
the points that you put out are so precious information.
true to the art and your instincts.
Yes, I totally agree with you on this and I think a lot of new people (me included) are trying to fix things in post-production instead of taking the time in pre-production. I’m really enjoying your style of explaining these concepts by way of examples and by trying to recreate a certain look or mood - keep going! Cheers Tony
LUTs don't replace manually grading, but I find them useful to give a sort of unifying look at the end. Once I finish my grade, I'll use a LUT at around 10 percent strength in a whole scene or project, it really helps to construct an unity
Bro. Sick tutorial man... definitely gained a new subscriber. This was super helpful.
Awesome! Love the style of your videos and appreciate you letting us into some of your thought process behind creating striking shots like these.
Thanks for sharing! It's always very inspiring!
Great as always Spenser. Not enough people focus on that part of Filmmaking
Awesome video - I’m a beginner who has been getting frustrated trying to force Colors into the color grade. It needs to be thought about in camera first!
This is awesome! Cannot wait for your grading video to come.
Spencer your content is awesome! Keep up the great videos, this is so perfect for beginners like me. Thank you!
my favorite part of the video is the fact that your example footage (Green Shirt Spencer) is nodding his head in complete agreement with what UA-cam Spencer is saying. It's as if he's nodding his head like, "Yeah, that's right me. You know what you're talking about."
Hello there.
I've been watching all of your videos now & I wanna tell you all of your content is amazing af.
But could you please do a tutorial on how to expose log footages? It would be really helpful. The way you explains everything is much more simpler and understandable compared to other filmmakers.
You know that you are becoming one of our favorite source for cinematic filmmaking Spencer right? Awesome advices. Also can you tell us which lens you used with the S1H?
He showed a canon 55mm f1.2 fd prime
Important to also consider the vibe of a monochromatic look - Mercedes commercial gained a lot of texture from having complimentary greens and the browns - being aware of the colors in your shot is a great start but it’s important to mix them consciously.
I love your videos dude!!! you made some great point that I easily forget, and that definitely weren't taught to me at film school 😆keep it up dude
Get excited by every notification I get from this channel 🙌
Loving these videos! I’d like to create more stuff like this that is less gear review and more practical/creative use. Keep it up 👍
That was totally awesome! So many things to consider to creat a scene we can be happy with. Great content, man. Would love to read that book you mentioned at the beginning of the vid. Gonna search for it! “Paint with lights”, right?! Thanks for sharing this. Keep rocking 👊
Luv your videos... very practical, professional advise. Thanks much!!
You are a master, thank you so much for all your videos, very instructive. One question, how do you do to having your smooth and soft skin like this ?
Soft light
Hey Bro! Great Video as always! Would love to know more about your coloring process :)
Please make a list of those DP'S
Very helpful. Thank you so much!
Very informative, love this.
I've been debating drinking and shooting... I know it would take the edge off... but I don't what to depend on that...
Good production design makes life beautiful ✌️ Thanks for sharing.
This was so helpful
Very creative video...please keep this up!
Got me thinking!
I like his style, simple and effective. I also prefer a darker atmosphere myself, I like China silk and unbleached muslin for a soft look.
For your money, Lt. grid diffusion is more durable than 1/4 grid.
This is the thing that REALLY matters! The stuff in front of the camera!
another great video man. definitely given me some things to think about.
There is one difference between your video and the recreation that I find interesting. The original ad had a distinctly deeper depth of field, which means a smaller aperture which means more light was needed. From my, admittedly limited experience I find shooting a wider aperture, especially with lower cost cine lenses and am nd filter affects contrast and color saturation in the ungraded image, potentially giving you less to work with in post, especially if you're shooting on a compressed format.
Good stuff. Can't wait to see how you color grade.
Which camera/lens combo did you use for this video? Looks real nice
Yes! Nice vid and thx for that. When I saw the moment where you swiped from what looked like vlog to a graded image, it made me wonder if you have any special techniques to avoid noise while shooting in vlog with the S1H. I can't figure out how to avoid that in-camera noise. :-(
I had zero noise issues with this camera in normal shooting situations. 🤷🏻
Could you recommend some DPs to follow similarly to how you described discovering newly released work like commercials for example. Really enjoy your videos 🍻
Someone had to say it and I'm glad it was you.
Would a camera with 8bit codec still retain the color palette?
Painting the frame before taking the shot 😜 Inspirational video, thanks!
Nice, who are the commercial filmmakers you recommend to follow? Cheers
Video Upskill I’d love to know too 😀
Great breakdown and that La Croix! 😂
I clicked the like button 3 times because it was so good
Dope content as always mate, not helping my obsession with the S1H paired with vintage lenses at all....not at ALL!!!!
Bro, I LOVE your videos, every time it’s something super interesting and explained very well, bravo! Look forward to the next one
Quick question: what stand do you use to prop up your diffusion material to bounce through? Is it a C Stand with some sort of pole at the top? Thanks!
Home Depot special. I’ll make a video over it at some point.
Hey do you still use the F7 light or only the professional Arri lights? I am shooting a student short film in the future and need buy some nice lights.
damn dude, you're fucking killing it. in class they preach about this, but still it's a little intimidating to try to recreate and not as easy but your video definitely gave me some extra pointer.. thanks broskie🤜🤛
good work. i think you could have added some warm practical lights and candels to sell the scene even more though. dont you agree ?
Absolutely
Great job!!!
Shout out for the algorithm
really wanna know how you color graded your "Her" recreated scenes
Hey man, dig your stuff. I need to step up my game. Haha.
Really well explained👍👍👍You could have had a beer.At least where I live most brands are green😆
Great video!
Love your content bro! Cheers from another beer drinker
Hey. Can you name the list of DP's you follow on Vimeo for commercials so I can follow them as well?
😂
@@spensersakurai what's funny? I'm trying to learn too. I live in Georgia
Which dp's do you recommend to follow on vimeo?
this is a odd question but what tripod did you use for the test shoot?
Thanks this is so helpful once again! Any reason why you went with the 1/4 strength specifically and not the 1/8?
That’s the one I own. It’s not as strong as you would think but I wouldn’t want much more.
What kind of Neg did you use?
What Len did you use thanks!
Awesome video! Always super helpful, stoked to try this out into future productions! Btw, what was your lighting set up for the shot of you talking in front of the glass wall?
Led panel bounced off my wood cabinets. Little blue led outside for fun.
Take it all in guys, this is the advanced knowledge the rest of "filmmaking youtube" doesn't teach you 😂
Thank you for this. I get the title works to click, but really it should be called ------ "your approach to filmmaking and scene building and general thinking was too superficial, here's how to look deeper and not work your scene like a dummy... as a side effect, you're color will be amazing, but also so will everything... You're welcome! `Spenser"
Seriously love how smart this one was! I hope others "get it".
Who are these DP's and Directors you've curatored
Man I hope you see this but you see the warm indoor look that you have while your talking to us in this video can you show us how to get that look? Because I seriously think I'm overthinking it.
Yep. Did it on purpose. Bounced the light off my wood cabinets.
Trying to decide between BMPCC4K or S1H - how are you finding the Panasonic?
Both are great for different reasons. Really love the full frame on the Panasonic.
Spenser Sakurai if you could get one and a lens for the same cost as the body of the BMPCC6K - would you? :)
Nice job bro
I just sent a DM
Green color palette theme, coincidentally green's also the color of a can of Lime La Croix, sip, green, sip, La Croix, sip, green, sip, label out, cool refreshing La Croix...this is secretly a La Croix commercial isn't it? I'm onto you -_-, right after I finish this Lime La Croix that I suddenly have a craving for...
Seems like he was just slamming that drink down the way he refused the B roll lol or he did actually just take sips back to back til it was gone lol
Spenser, if I may, no ice in your whiskey, pls ;-)
But it was bad whiskey
the title is confusing / wrong
i expected for editing technique
but it's more about location and stuff..
love the hat!
Interesting
I thought you shot the Mercedes commercial! Haha not that you couldn’t
This isn't really a technique, this is how a real DP should work and how the greatest in the industry do it!. Then we have those false DP's that just try to fix their shit in post...
ALWAYS GET IT THE BEST WAY POSIBLE IN CAMERA.
I love your content, but for the first time I don't really agree with you. This is obviously already graded video (quite heavily graded). You're not able to tell what colors has been used on set, just by looking at graded video. On the example you're showing lots of keying and power windows was used to keep warm tones (lights and skin) where they should be and to get such a nice looking image. Shadows and mid-tones seems to be pushed towards green therefore even grey or black can appear greenish, which gives false impression of the colors used on set.
In other words, LUTz won’t fix bad lighting and set design... I think Film School has a similar warning in one of their lighting clips... do the coloring on the set... can’t “fix” in Post...expose it
My only problem with this video is that Key Lime is a garbage flavor of LaCroix. Everything else is fabulous. Also, would love to know who you follow on Vimeo. Never thought of gathering reference and inspiration that way.
nice, you missing a little more warmth
skin tones are looking a bit green or is it just me?
Who should I be following on Vimeo?
why are there so many cuts in your videos? It's super distracting.
I could have played that psychic in that video for you bruh. Need more videos where you dress up like something ridiculous.
Almost like John Wick 3.
Want better color? Use film.
dude, dont even close : /
You drink all the time.😅
A coke would have made that shot 10x
