    I've had a '93 RX7 for 25 years. I've put 180,000 miles on it (2nd engine). It's a pleasure and has been more dependable than most people are lead to believe. It isn't perfect... we need a word better than perfect. Like Matt Farrah once said, "pretty beats everything".

    Your sentiment at the end about fixing things wrong with it is how I've felt about bikes I still own but don't ride hardly at all, and my end of year goal after I finish this last build of the year is to fix all those small little annoying issues that make me not want to ride certain bikes. I ride my XS650 almost every day, but everything else just sits. Guess that's the problem with owning a bunch of vehicles; there's a never ending to-do list, and if you start tackling the issues, being in the garage working on the same old bikes can feel like purgatory lol.

      So i fixed them one by one, Fixed one to sell it and moved on to the next one. After a while i was left with only 2.
      one of those is my daily driver now, The other one is for Sunday rides and generally mainly for me to hobby on and sometimes for a meeting here and there.
      But that's probably how i like to keep it, Just 2. 1 for transport and the other for the hobby

Never had a problem, even in really bad LA traffic everyday or on 2000mi road trips. I also don't baby the car. I beat the actual shit outta the FD but she loves the punishment. 92k miles. Only actual engine work I've done was tear the motor apart and replace the coolant seals. Cleaned everything else off and put it back together, even with the OEM Apex seals. I once got 26mpg on my stock 94 driving 1,100 miles from west texas to LA for Sevenstock. When these cars get ported and modified, efficiency tuning usually goes out the window.
    Edit: Why are you premixing after filling the car up? That fuel gauge is pretty liner so just estimate ahead of time how many gallons you'll need to fill up and add the necessary premix before the gas. This way you get a better mixture instead of having 2cyl oil in filler neck.

  • @bentracy7463
    @bentracy7463 2 роки тому +8

    Can never go wrong with more rotary content :).
    Consider getting a "sohn" adapter (OMP adapter) for the car. I made my own but I believe rotary aviation and a couple other places sell them. This way you just have a tank full of two stroke oil and it stops pulling from the crankcase. You can even put a level sensor in it so that you don't have to pop the hood every time. I personally do not premix on top of this for a couple reasons, but you still could if you want to.
    Looking forward to seeing some more of the RX7!
    Edit: /wisper oh yeah, and having no power steering in these cars really ain't so bad :). They're nice and light, although of course big sticky tires will counteract that. Just consider it part of your exercise routine.

    Run the oil metering pump to an external resevior for 2 stroke premix instead of normal pan oil so then you don't have to premix, and you remove the soot that normal engine oil causes, making it so you not only save oil, you keep your engine cleaner and more reliable as normal oil should not be going into the combustion chamber. You honestly shouldn't even premix your fuel without blocking off the OMP as you're just crudding up your engine more than you need to. Normal oil will do its job, it just doesnt do it as cleanly as the 2 stroke oil and adding more oil into the combustion chamber will only make the problem worse no matter what it is. A-lot of the reliability problems just come from the fact that you can't run a higher weight oil because if you were to use it, it would become too ashy in the combustion chamber and leave carbon deposits, ultimately destroying corner seals and side seals. Also, the oil they run to begin with is way too ashy for the application and when the oil mixes with the gas it also loses lubricity, which is why you need to run a higher weight oil like 20w50, but you can't do that without the oil injection problem being fixed. If you fix those problems the usability and reliability of your engine will go up 10 fold but all I hear is complaining from people with rotaries and infighting when you could honestly have a fairly reliable engine with a fairly easy maintenance regiment for over 100k miles

  • @dawggpie
    @dawggpie 2 роки тому +6

    Ouch, just popped the diff in my fd a couple weeks back doing the same thing. Even with a brace it's the weakest link in the drivetrain. Mine ripped the teeth off of the torsen lsd gears which is pretty common. Apparently (wish I knew previously) it's fragile at launches, esp with big sticky tires, but once you're moving it's fine even with big hp.
    Regarding the omp, better to keep it on a well built street car. Without the omp there won't be any oil lubricating the apex seals on throttle off over run (like cruising down a hill) which won't be great for the engine over time.

    • @dawggpie
      @dawggpie 2 роки тому

      @@hkn_r34 yup, u can do that, but that's a little less streetable since you're burning more fuel, makes the car feel a little less smooth on decel and possibly shooting flames out the back depending on how u have it tuned.

  • @54M0HT

    Thanks for another great vid, car looks and sounds *great*.
    I have to say though, most of the friction that stops you dailying your car is self-inflicted.
    Cold shut-off is more an RX-8 issue, my FD doesn't flood when shut down cold. I normally shutoff at 4k rpm if cold but that's more a superstition, never had any problems without.
    Premix is superfluous while the OMP is working. Incidentally Mazda improved the OMP in 96 so subsequent cars consume far less oil, doesn't help your 93 tho unless you can source a later pump.
    Stock clutch is fine at c.330hp, unsure with your power.
    Stock PAS is fine, car is designed for it and makes it easier to catch the tail I think.
    Space behind the seats can take a suitcase or two, plenty of luggage for two ppl.
    So basically the car Mazda originally sold, especially Series 7 on, is a perfectly good daily driver if you want to ;) If you want to turn it into a toy then absolutely, it's fun enough to be a special car with the light weight, balance and power, but that's a choice not an inherent issue.
    My 96 FD was my only car for seven years. Yes it's fragile, but I found it perfectly acceptable (as did my wife!). I gave in and got an AMG to run alongside only recently. RX-7 isn't going anywhere though!
    Good luck fixing the diff and keep us posted!

A driver experienced with burnouts will know something is off and he's not spinning tires because it feels different. If you are a beginner it's best to angle the side mirror so you can see 1 rear tire and be 100% sure you are spinning the tires and not burning the clutch till you get a feel for it.

    For a car like this, it's like owning a 'toy', that no matter how many time it breaks, how bad it breaks, you keep it and fix it always. It's also like a weekend getaway where you focus all your attention and devote everything to this car for just a day or even few hours, both the good and the bad things, the enjoyment and the annoyance, the satisfaction and frustration just because you accept everything about it.
    I kept in mind that one day, i (and everyone who dreamed of their 'toys') will have enough of everything to fully commit and devote myself to keep and fix a 'toy' like this. Cheers!

Once you get over every bit of interior creaking at the slightest of road bumps, seating space so cramped I literally have to tuck my body just to fit, checking oil after every drive to make sure it's not drinking it like water, praying it doesn't rain otherwise the soft top is about as useful as a broken umbrella, and every other muscle car on the road still handing me the gap even when it's in valve lift range. The joys of driving these old gems 😂😑
