I was never the "obsessive LinkedIn/company family" type, but I did bust my tail for a long time at multiple companies with very little to show for it. I've been dramatically changing course in my career life and putting myself first in ways that of course don't require being bitter or blatantly selfish; healthy personal improvements are in progress in other words, and I've not been genuinely happier in a long time. Solid message and 100% the truth... look out for yourself only. Virtually every corporation is like this. My dad worked his ass off at Publix as a bakery manager for over 20+ years. His department did so well, they would send him off to newly opened stores to get up and running. He had the opportunity to move into store management but it conflicted with his church schedule so he didn't take it. Very rarely took a sick day and accrued them over the years. When he ended up getting diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, they only let him use half his sick time before kicking him to the curb. They didn't let him use the other half he had saved up, which at that time was a substantial amount of money for him. I had two negative experiences with them too. Publix is notorious for the "we're a family" and "we take care of our employees" bs and they're no better than any other corporation.

To be considered Family, you have to be there for the person in hard times and help them, that could include financial help, physical help, emotional help, etc.
If you are not performing to the Company's standards, or the Company is losing huge profits, you will be kicked off the "Family" instantly.
Real Life Families don't kick you out because you lack performance or the Family is in trouble.
People fall for this Corporate "Family" crap so easily, they think that if they are loyal to the Company, and if they perform their best, the Company will never fire them. They are living in complete delusion.
A Company's main goal is to stay in Business, not take care of its "Family", if they see you as a liability, you're off the "Family".

And no, I don't want to have a frick'n weekly potluck where everyone is tying to score the cups, pop, and plates part of the sign up. Work potlucks gross me out. Food brought in from people's homes, and made with mystery crap from their fridge/pantry. Possibly made on counters that were cleaned who knows how long ago, maybe toss in a little dog hair or cat litter dust in the air. The whole causal dress on certain days is f'n laughable. It's somehow a treat to wear comfortable clothes in an environment where you have no interaction with clients or customers? Or, is it just a zero cost 'treat' (similar to the zero company cost mandated weekly potlucks)? I worked in a corporate office for a major bank and all of this BS stuff is like nails on a chalkboard. It's really bad in the military too. Whenever we have "platoon lunches", I show up, get accounted for and proceed to leave once I'm given the green light.

There was one day where they all had a "Team Building" event. I remember standing there at 10am in 90 degree heat! Other than that one we had a whole week down there all inclusive on the resort to do what we wanted. Pretty much all we spent was tips and souvenirs. One team building thing with them all having same shirts on was worth the week there :) My wife that isn't even a drinker would start at 8am-9am :) I had no problem with that because I can hang all day as long as I stick to beer :)

I got the gist "yeah we're like brothers-in-arms and we'd die for each other." But the army is so fucking infatuated with the idea of becoming the replacement of families. Which for me personally, I come from a broken family, and I don't want a replacement. So they'd target people like me get in the groove of this garbage.

I finally got a "NOT company wide" raise for the first time in two years. It's < 3%, when CPI was +7% for the previous year. I'm sure it's one of the highest raises on the floor (< $0.50 an hour). But it still doesn't put me in a position to rent an apartment in the city where I work. Rent that will likely double in the next year+ due to samsung, tesla, amazon, and others moving from Cali to here.

Well, there are some jobs where we look at it as family. It would be the employees who got away and do something else now. We often looked at that employer as a prison facility and we referred to our employment as the sentence we served as punishment.
That employer still hires people sub minimum wage in California, says they can't afford to hire people at a living wage for the area and insists that all employees are trying to steal from them even after the CEO was reported and caught for skimming off the top.
So yeah, that's a family. The ones who escaped.

These types of companies are selling the family and work to maintain employees, try to motivate them. It's all a facade. It's a for profit business, the founder is truly concerned more about sales growth, profits, than the disposable employees. This business is actually a staffing firm based on AI technology. I don't think this firm is any different than any other staffing firm that matches positions with candidates. They may have it automated.
