I have played drums for almost 60 years. I have heard all the greats. In my opinion, Kai Hahto is the best metal drummer around today and certainly in my top 5 rock drummers of all time. This was an absolute bravura performance. I have watched his drum cam for this song. His hands are just a blur. Great reaction-so glad you got into Wintersun. In my opinion, Time from the same session is an even better song. Oh, and since no one has mentioned it yet, Jari, the composer and singer, did all that with part of one of his lungs missing. He contracted Tuberculosis during his military service for Finland and had to have part of one lung removed. I cannot believe that he can sing and growl like that.

Those sessions left drummer Kai Hahto so exhausted that he had to go on vacation with NIghtwish afterwards. And meanwhile the bass player of Wintersun has joined Nightwish as well.
Time is definitely the next obvious step on this journey, and it's my favorite Wintersun song. I also strongly recommend Loneliness from their Forest Seasons album.
Fun fact that Time was played first in this session, Sons were second song they did.

If you think Nightwish is a holiday for Kai just watch him play live he does not let up at all

But back to the point:
Good drumming is never easy and Kai Hahto alway is top notch. I also like his drumming with Nightwish. E.g. the fills in the last part of "Greatest Show On Earth" are rad. But playing blast beats to a waltz You will only hear from Wintersun! ;-)
Wintersun is finnish metal band from nations capitol Helsinki. Jari Mäenpää (guitar, leadsinger) is mastermind behind the band and Wintersun started as his soloproject while he was still playing in Ensiferum. Other wizards are Teemu Mäntysaari (guitar, backing vocals), Jukka Koskinen (bass, backing vocals, also plays in Nightwish atm.) and human metronome himself Kai Hahto (now also drummer of Nightwish).
There is still two songs from same rehearsals, Time and Land of Snow and Sorrow which are great. For me Time is the most metal song ever... period. These songs are from Time 1 album.
First album Wintersun has really great songs like Death and Healing, Starchild, Winter Madness, Sadness and Hate (all official lyric videos) to react.
Forest Seasons album is really great and versatile. Awaken From the Dark Slumber (spring), Forest That Weeps (summer), Eternal Darkness (autumn, the best black metal song) and Loneliness (winter) all official lyric videos. 🙏🏼😎✌🏼

Everyone will recommend TIme (and with good reason), but for me Loniness is so good, you can feel the Cold in that Song.
"Time" from Wintersun have more clean vocals if you are interested, from same studio live.

Just some quick facts for you :)
The album "Time" was delayed by years because computers just couldn't handle the orchestral arrangement (allegedly) that Jari (vocalist and composer) put together. When it released it was released as an EP called "Time I" and consists of three tracks and two instrumental fillers. "Time II" has not been released yet.
Jari the vocalist had part of a lung amputated due to tuberculosis, also he does not play the guitar when Wintersun performs live.
The drummer (Kai Hatho) is the current drummer for Nightwish.
After Marco left Nightwish, the base player from Wintersun (Jukka) joined to fill in the spot Marco left behind.
The song "Time" (and the title track) from the same sessions is a banger as well, although less varied, many argue it's the better song. Also it's the last track of the EP and also the sessions and Kai the drummer sweats buckets :D
They have three albums "Wintersun", "Time I" (an EP if you want to call it that) and "The Forest Seasons" which has four songs inspired by Vivaldi. Each song is in a different style (death, black, etc and different moods), the song "Winter" is a beautiful metal ballad and there's a lyrics video available for it (highly recommended song as well).
Jari, the vocalist, composes, plays, arranges, sings and mixes it all by himself. The only part he didn't compose or play were the drums. He asked Kai to do it and for once he gets to play something complicated enough to make him shine. I am not sure anyone else in the world can play it just like that.
The album took six years for Jari to make and there are like 1400 tracks in some songs, up to 400 of them playing simultaneously.
And the softer parts are there to make the harder ones sound even harder. And to tell the story.
Wintersun music makes me missing my home, Finland 😭

This is a great reaction. But i always wondered why almost none of the reactors ever appreciate the guitar playing. they only focus on the drumming. The guitar playing in this is next level. the stamina and the endurance needed to play this tightly as this, is insane!
Also Both Jari and Teemu are two of the greatest to ever hold the instrument.
Musically this is top notch by ALL members of this band. And still i found nice little catches and things after so many years :)

for another song of wintersun I recommend autumn (eternal darkness) and winter (loneliness) from the winter seasons album with eternal darkness beeing a really intense song and loneliness hitting you right in the feels with jari's most impressive vocals
saw them live in atlanta 2013, they played this song in its entirety, drummer got no breaks lol. kai is an absolute beast. i recorded the full song. still one of my favorite concerts ive been to.

I think there are a lot of good songwriters in Finland, but two of them are composers: Jari Mäenpää / Wintersun and Tuomas Holopainen / Nightwish.
Wintersun's drummer Kai Hahto has been playing at Nightwish since summer 2014. He will be heard on Nightwish’s 8th and 9th albums. And also with the next one that Tuomas just started composing.
Now Wintersun's bassist (Jukka) is working as a session bassist at Nightwish !!! At least the gigs 2021-2023.
Since Kai Hahto is busy at Nightwish, a session drummer will play in his place at Wintersun’s gigs. So far, I understand, three different drummers. And I've also heard that they play this song a little simpler, for example. I understand that, few can play like Kai ...
During his career, Kai has played drums in many different bands and orchestras. Rock, metal, the city orchestra of his hometown, in France in a jazz band ... For Kai, metal music is number 1 but second is jazz.
And yet, after seeing that, Imagine, Kai has said in an interview this winter that he is still studying drumming. Because there is still a lot to learn !!! Very humble attitude to his instrument!
BTW. He also teaches drumming, now that he has had a lot of free time, he is focused on taking students for 2-3 days of training. The student lives in his home and they spend the day in Kai’s rehearsal studio. Very intensive teaching. He has had students of all ages and skill levels there.
Next Wintersun song. From the same album (Time 1), from the same rehearsal session, the song "Time". Roughly the same length, but as many have already said, even better than this. One of my own favorite songs.

The band Is from Finland 🇫🇮, the best School Of Melodic Metal Of the Earth. And Jari Maenpää is the mastermind, the composser Of this epic song, then Kai Hahto Is a beast on the drums. Great band with Beautiful songs... Last Studio album calls "The Forest Seasons" and it has 4 songs, one for every season Of the Year. I can recommend you the song "Loneliness (Winter)" the album version and then you must listen the acoustic version.

The singer Jari was part of Ensiferum a Viking themed Power-Metal band. If you like the sound of Wintersun Ensiferum is a good follow up. I would recommend Rum, Women, Victory or One Man Army as starter, even though its the line up after Jari left.
Side fact: Jari cought tuberkolosis during his time in the finish army and therefore lost a part of his lungs.

I've been pretty obsessed with Wintersun for that last few months, I recommend watching both of the other live studio songs they did in this session ('Time' and 'Land of Snow and Sorrow') then get into the rest of the material. The Forest Seasons Album is probably my favorite.
Kai the drumer and Jukka the bassist are now with Nightwish which I know you also like. However I hope they keep producing Winterson tunes as well, they are 2 of my favorite bands now.
i know kai was with nightwish now but i didnt know about Jukka but all i can say is that im sure they wont leave Wintersun for a reason so little like ''well we are in another band now''. i know Kai wrote all of the drum lines for this song

People always point to this song and Time, but I really like the album as a whole. There is an intro song before this one that flows directly into it and the album is a journey.

The Forest Seasons album by them is criminally underrated. Mostly because this song and Time takes all the attention.

Jari is mastermind and knowing he only has one lung...
Saw them as support act, and they out played the main act by miles.

With drumming I like to say.
If you play the guitar, its one instrument.
When you play the bass. it's one instrument.
A violin.. one instrument.
Playing a drum kit is sometimes 20-30-40 different instruments... at one time. not counting cow bells, tambourines and what not.
And while playing multiple instruments at once, they are also playing multiple melodies at once, following multiple rhythms at once.
While also often being the one to carry the songs tempo and progression.
No other instrument has all those things.
But its often forgotten a bit, because it is the background drive that gives room for the bass and guitar to shine.
Or the singer to tell a story, but they all do it following everything the drummer does.
Its also much easier to hide mistakes on the guitar or bass or something, it can be corrected so most won't hear it.
However when the drummer makes a mistake not only does it stand out a lot, it can also impact the entire song because most songs are driven from the drums.
Drummers should get much more love.

Kai is a machine on drums, he actually has a video of his drum playthrough for a couple of Wintersun songs, Kai is now also the drummer for Nightwish, Jukka the Bass player is the touring bassist for NW (I hope he gets the full time gig at some point)
I love Wintersun so much. This whole album is a damn masterpiece. They don't have a bad song. Saw them in concert a while ago and the whole crowd had arms locked and were singing along when this one came on. It was a great experience. Jari is a fucking beast.
You actually have seen this drummer before. He is the current Nightwish drummer and was in some of the Nightwish videos you reacted too. Of course he stands out less with Nightwish, its honestly more of a vacation for him.

As others have pointed out, the next song from Wintersun you could listen to is "time" from the same live rehearsal. Other suggestions would be "loneliness" if you like his clean vocals, or "battle against time" or "starchild" from their first record "wintersun".

There's a video available, which focuses on Kai's drumming in that session. If you liked this song, there's also Folk Viking Metal band Turisas' song "Stand Up and Fight", which goes well together with these WIntersun's session songs. A song with same kind of epicness and perhaps with even more emotion. From Finnish female fronted Metal bands, there's Wintersun guitarist Teemu Mäntysaari's other band Smackbound with Netta Laurenne singing. Songs like "Wall of Silence" (harsh vocals), "The Game" (ballad) and "Drive It Like You Stole It" (Rock influenced Metal). Then there's the former and current singers of Battle Beast; the former singer Nitte Valo in the official live version of their song "Iron Hand" and current singer Noora Louhimo E.g. in one of their latest songs like "Eye of the Storm". They are fun singers to listen with powerful voices. For Operatic Metal there's soprano Heidi Parviainen's band Dark Sarah. I'd recommend her song "Dance with the Dragon" featuring baritone JP Leppäluoto. From inside an actual theatre and with a talented male singer Marko Saaresto, there's Poets of the Fall's Alexander Theatre acoustic live sessions with ballad songs like "Lift" and "Angel". There's also a good live version available of their biggest hit song "Carnival of Rust". Amorphis' singer Tomi Joutsen is praised for his growls and clean vocals. Their song "Death of a King" is a good example. On the song "Amongst Stars" he duets with Anneke van Giersbergen.

I so fckn feel your thoughts like we were tweens.
I saw an interview with metal drummer Flo Mounier of Cryptopsy were he plays a ridiculously amount of dubbel bass kicks. His training was sitting down and watching a full movie and letting his feet rip for the length of the movie. So I doubt Kai needs a break. He can go for a whole concert so this is nothing.
