Thanks for the video! I loved seeing the comparison of all these vans, old and new. The only van I’ve ever owned was a 2001 Mazda MPV and I loved that van. Unfortunately, it was totaled when another driver ran a red light and plowed into me, but it was a fantastic, roomy and much loved little van. Thanks for the dreams!
Steve, I have owned both the Toyota Previa (loved it!) and the Sienna and the Sienna is just as good for solo camping. In fact, it has a couple of plusses over the Previa. My mechanic just begged me to not take my Sienna solo camping in the mountains anymore and I almost cried. (That's how I found your 4Runner video.) I have taken my Sienna off-road all over the deserts and mountains of Arizona, and as long as I am careful and not foolish it has been just fine. (I was about to do the lift kit for it you showed before my mechanic had an intervention:( And I laughed out loud at "XPlorer Steve has an obsession with camper van builds." I thought, "It's not just me!" Thanks for the video.

@@danielbruno1718 I don't have a blog but @Xplorer Steve DIY has totally inspired me on the UA-cam channel idea - someday :) I was looking at either a Sequoia or another Toyota Sienna, AWD, with the plan of adding a lift kit and KO2s, but I found a 10 year old 2nd gen Honda Pilot that is cosmetically imperfect but mechanically awesome and it is ideal! It is not a 4WD but with Cooper Discoverers it is more than capable of sensible off-roading. On the roof I mounted Yakima round bars with a double rifle box to serve as a cargo box that is low profile enough to fit in the garage, traction boards and kayak racks. I mounted a 100 watt Renogy panel on the Renogy tilt kit on top over the moon roof that more than powers my Jackery and Goal Zero power stations. Hi Stephanie, I’ve been looking at either getting a Toyota Sienna or a 2nd Gen 2014 Honda Pilot as my first Adventure Vehicle. Are you still loving the Honda Pilot and since you’ve had both would you recommend a Pilot or a Sienna to start exploring in?
I loved hearing your observations in this video. I’m currently searching for my dream adventure/work van and you made me think about certain aspects that I’ve yet to consider. Thinking being able to stand up straight is crucial for my next build. Great video though!
Those Misubishi Delica's are hugely popular here in British Columbia, we have dealers and many garages work on them so parts are not an issue. Was looking to replace my 22 yr old Subaru earlier in the summer and had seriously consider one but in the end got a newer Subaru, planning on doing a lift and roof top tent. My last one was so dependable and went everywhere .
Currently in Korea, there's newly growing trend called 'Chabak' which translates to 'sleeping in cars'. More and more people are ditching tents and equipping their SUVS and Van's for all-in-one camping mobiles. Hyundai Starex, KIA Sedonas are the most popular, though 2.5 inline 4 diesel 4x4's are very rare to find. ( I did see one.) I think they were mostly exported. I enjoy your fun and informative uploads all the time. Thank you and God bless!
The wife and I just picked up a 2005 Lexus LX470 with the express purpose of doing 'stealth camping' anywhere we want. When we stumbled upon your channel, she commented that you looked Korean (she is), and the Mt. Charleston trip to make Korean BBQ confirmed it! We still own a 2015 Sienna and gave careful consideration to converting it for camping, but my daughter has been using it for a daily driver and I don't think she'll give it back willingly.
before i got my van, i pretty much had the same requirements: small, 4wd, diesel (left hand drive). finally realizing that i'll probably never find one in this country (US).. i ended up with a low-roof promaster. i'm growing to love the way it looks. p.s. "chukka boot" and ford "baluga" lol!

The Japanese Toyota HiAce vans are my favorite. My in laws and I rented one and drove around Kyushu in Japan. Don't know why Toyota doesn't bring them!??
Those HiAces look really cool modded out for street with fender flares and wide body builds...I gotta hand it to those japanese tuner guys, they know how to make a cool looking van. I've been wanting to have one imported.

Thank you for another great video. My husband and I just got back from a 2 week road trip, in a Toyota Sienna. 6 nights camping and 5 nights in Motels or hotels. 3158 miles driven. We did ok camping on, BLM and National Forest land, even with stock tiers and suspensions on the minivan. We did cook or make our own food 90% of the trip and because my husband has the America Sr passport we spent way less than the budgeted $65/day including gas and the hotels. I think a 3" lift would make the minivan truly perfect for longer trips with the 2 of us. I don't think we would go for as big tiers as the bad as.. model you have in the video though. Safe travels.
that is a great way to go. I would do a hotel every so often as well. Good time to get the rig swept out and reorganized and do laundry and such. Thanks for sharing.
I Agree - I also think Hyundai's Korea Domestic Market version of 4x4 STAREX H1 would be the best combination of everything. It's 4WD system actually come from Mitsubishi PAJERO/MONTERO so you can swap out a lot of suspension / Drivetrain parts from Mitsubishi MONTERO into STARTEX. It's basically a Montero with Delica Body on it, with 2.5L Diesel and Left Hand Drive. PERFECT!!!! Thing is, the camper van trend took off in South Korea since COVID and EVERYONE's looking for a used 4x4 Starex... so it's DAMN NEAR Impossible to find one, let a lone a 1997 or earlier model that'll comply with the 25 year US import exemption.

I had the Brother to the Space gear for 15 yrs up here in Canada - The L049 Pajero. There are many of them for sale in Canada in Vancouver (Pajero, Space gear, Hiace and Prado). You could make a trip back to Vancouver for a few days after all this stuff is done and take one out for a spin for a while to see if it fits your needs. I have both left and right hand vehicals and the switch between is simple and I am just a couple 3 years younger than you so age is not an excuse :-). After 15 years of the Pajero I sold it and for the Prado, 97, with 106,00km (about 63,000mi) and have been running it for 7 months now and love it - It is not Diesel like the Pajero was but parts availability is a snap as the running gear is all 4 runner with the main difference being the xfer case (Full time 4wd) and the frame being a heavier gauge. But here is the kicker - THe '88 Pajero in 2005 cost me 6K Canadian all fees taxes, shipping and the truck to Ontario (Close to Detroit) and the Prado was $10,000 CDN those 15 yrs later. It is fantastic fantastic value and the '96 Prado is legal to the US next year.
I have complete confidence in you. Just buy a 60's / 70's cheap put up to 10k in it and you will have what you want. Save 60k.Nice winter project. Plus if you need help welding i know a dude in Minnesota that will help. Have a nice Sunday.
Interesting thoughts. I should have kept my 1984 Dodge Ram that had an ice box, two passenger seats and a fold down rear bench. It would be perfect as a basic campervan now. Only problem is that on purchase the engine temp gage did not work and the service department person said they could order a new one, but after testing, the operating temp was normal. So he advised leaving it alone due to the cost of installation, and if engine started smoking then stop and inspect. So for 10 years I never knew what the engine temp was. Luckily, no problems. Then just before selling had some issues with the transmission and electrical components. The van was low mileage for age since I had another car as my daily driver. The Dodge Van worked very well for family vacations and trips. Plenty of room to spread out and for luggage and supplies.
We have the same taste on dream vans. I have a 2008 Subaru Tribeca that I would like to lift a little bit 2" to 3" maybe and put a nice looking semi offroad tires. Where can I get a good lift kit package? Thanks, Rob
Very informative about other vans not available in the 🇺🇸 however I LOVE my 14' Chevy Express 3500 passenger van! bought to pull my camper and carries the NorthStarDanes comfortably 😉
I just came back from Jamaica and the Toyota Van's there from Japan are not in America they would be perfect, and also the Toyota buses. I wish they were here.
I would just get a used Grand Caravan. Was also available as the Dodge ram cargo, with steel windows and metal flat bed. Interior space beat the sienna,Odyssey and cheaper. It will blend with the decor and nobody will notice.
Great video, I have also drooled over foreign vans we have no access to. The Chevy Astro and GMC Safari came close in styling, available Awd and mid size room and reliability. But they are no longer made and are hard to come by in decent shape.
There seemed to be lots of pop-top1999-2004 Honda Stepwagon (equipped with realtime-AWD), they can be imported to Canada, and are usually pretty low mileage, like 60-110k KM, and sold around 8k-13k CAD. Also, 03-05 Toyota Alphard has AWD and there is also a hybrid version that claimed can get up to 38-40 MPG combined...
Xplorer Steve DIY if you simply UA-cam search pop top stepwagon and alphard hybrid, you’ll know what I meant. Or maybe you should look at a delica l400, those can be easily imported to the US, diesel usually costs a tad bit more, but gas variant usually costs around 6k -12k CAD depending on the condition of the car. Identical drivetrain with the 4x4 pajero, I am sure there are probably thousands of camping platform you can refer to online.
for instance, this is a JDM dealer near where I am, and I have seen that Lifted Delica, it's like a monster truck, and there's no way I can access any underground parkade lol: www.amazingautoimports.com/category/vehicles/rhd_vehicles/
I also don't particularly like the looks of the modern van type vehicles that are currently available here in the US. Quite honestly the price of a new vehicles in general turns me off so I would never buy a new one anyway. Because I hate the Ford Triton family of engines with their various top end oiling and spark plug issues, I love GM LS engines, so I opted to get a mid 2000's GM van. I picked up an extended 1 ton passenger van, which is still (barely) short enough to park nearly anywhere, and had a high top installed. That was a bit expensive, but as I am 6' tall I felt having the headroom was worth it. I did the conversion myself and figure I have about 18K invested in the entire project.
Hey Steve, have you checked out Duncan Imports in Nashville, TN? They specialize in Japanese imports and have a huge selection of Delicas and Hiaces, as well as some other models. And they don’t require a 2nd mortgage either.
Love the video, Steve. I have a Sienna on its last legs and I haven’t modded it, but I do sleep in the back from time to time and am interested in using a tent less often and doing a simple mod to my next van similar to how you did your 4Runner. None of the current vans appeal to me that much. The Transit Connect has decent specs, but it’s ugly as sin. The Chrysler Voyager is the current leader for me due mainly to its low price. I probably won’t be buying for another 6-12 months, though. There are some interesting SUV options out there, but nothing beats the space of a van and I make a lot of Home Depot runs.
I've been contemplating a Dodge Grand Caravan for true stealth adventuring in cities. Lots of space, easy to take back seats out, stow and go bonus storage & 20mpg combined and easy to do a basic build out with minimal skills & tools (which describes me). I'm a rookie so I thought this might be a good entry "tester" starting point. I can make mistakes and learn exactly what I need while seeing if this is for me longer term while using it as a daily driver. Also I can get rid of the van without a huge amount of capital loss beyond depreciation if I hate it or want to upgrade or simply go in a different direction. Thoughts?
another awesome production Senor Steve! "Jaunts" word of the day. I think because of my back and knees (58 in november) a high top is a must. Is their a high top suited for a fella 5'9 that dosent hit 7 foot cali rule? Also those euro vans that you mentioned, probably would have to consider a cassete style toilet correct?
I agree, the hate the look of the new vans. I thought I was the only one who hated the new look! Maybe its because I loved the old ones (I am your age too). I loved the conversions and had dreamed of having one in the 70s.
I actually did not know they made it in awd. I looked and they make lift kits for them. Not "dreamy" upon first inspection though. Worth a look, I'd say.
I've been contemplating building out my 2005 Hyundai Tucson but I think it is just to small. I will probably wind up buying something else. What is your take on truck campers? Great video as always!
Mr. Static, we can't let him diss your home like that. Do you want me to roast his van for you? For example, I could say that his van is like a pumpkin without the pump. Or, I could say that his van is like a buffalo without the buff. Just give me the word, Mr. Static. As of now, you're the only one holding me back. But please be mindful that you might want a measured response. If I compare his van to a cantaloupe, for instance, then my roast could spiral out of control as we are well aware of the multitude of levels at which the cantaloupe metaphor works. And, well, I, for one, do not want to be party to a response (however well deserved) that goes overboard.
What about an early 2000's T1N shorty Sprinter? I've seen them lifted and even made 4wd. They have that stubby front you like and if you found a low roof it wouldn't look like a beluga. 😁 By the way, I have the last version Xplorer made before shutting down. The 2003 Xtreme was built on the Freightliner Sprinter chassis (when they stopped making the Dodge vans). I bought it last year and have never found another one like mine. I have all the original paperwork for it too.
How do you feel about the VW camper vans, such as the California edition ? Unfortunately they aren’t sold in the US. Or what about the Dodge Sprinter T1N ? I do agree with you . These European style vans aren’t exciting and are oddly shaped. I wish Dodge and Chevy vans had a bit of an upgrade for style etc.
Im hearin ya steve baby .. i gotta 95 toyota hiace ..pronounced hi as in hi how ya doin .. and ace as in that was a ace report .. and ya kinn stick 15 " ford mags on em ..very niceypoos .. 😁jolly good carryon pip pips
I have been waiting for years to get a van. Being unable to afford a second vehicle and living in a cold climate, I must have four wheel drive daily driver. I can't believe we still don't have a decent option. My Toyota Tundra has been great, but I really want to switch to a van. I'm tired of waiting. Maybe I'll settle for an AWD mini van.
Naw. Small is okay. I mentioned the NV200 cost benefit analysis. They are small with no ground clearance or 4wd. Element van life makes good use of his, but not on my dream platform list non the less.
Toyota hi ace is a very nice van I have it experience drove it in the Philippines, but I don't think I can drive that in the freeway of the US not that safe though
Hey Steve .... "AWESOME" video, with tons of GOOD info !!!! I also LIKE the Hyundai H1 van .... I would trade my Hyundai Tucson Sport in for one in a NY minute ... I've owned 3 Hyundai models (all from brand new), and find them VERY reliable vehicles !!! (one had 271K miles on it at Trade in ... just routine maint & tires :) :) :) ... And COOL info about the RAM van thing in Korea .... I think the vintage RAMs were the BEST !!!!! (Rick from Massachusetts)
Ford's current vans are from their European design, the Econoline never made it over here, and the Transit is a newcomer to these shores. Dodge of course stopped making the B-series van in 2003, and their recent rebadging efforts, first with the Mercedes Sprinter and then with the Fiat Ducato do not exactly fill me with confidence, despite how popular those platforms are in Europe. The Chevy/GMC offering is at least made in North America, though not in the United States, and is the only traditional front-engine, RWD van still on the market. Pity it's so ugly. The downsized minivans are popular with the trades and soccer moms, but they don't appeal to me. I'm 6' even, so at least when I sleep, I need a little room to stretch out. I thought the Winnebago Solis looked nicely appointed, but again, it's built on that Fiat platform, and I don't have $100,000 to throw around like that anyhow. Since my '96 Xplorer is still going strong, I'm going to make that one last as long as I can. Who knows, better models may be available in a few years, but I fear it's consumer demand that drives van design today, and consumers don't want a vehicle that rides or handles like a truck, which to be honest, the Dodge B3500 chassis does.
True. My X handles like a dump truck but I love it. I just want the US manufacturers to put in an honest effort. It's just as easy to stamp out sexy body parts as the ugly ones.....
That van in the thumbnail! I haven't saw a vehicle that gorgeous since Marty McFly got his new Toyota truck.
You got my cranial wheels spinning with all of the rad vans your presented. Thank you for your excellent info and video too!

Then just before selling had some issues with the transmission and electrical components. The van was low mileage for age since I had another car as my daily driver. The Dodge Van worked very well for family vacations and trips. Plenty of room to spread out and for luggage and supplies.
Love my Dodge X. Last of the cool ones.
They are great vans. It is due for an update.
@@XplorerSteveDIY I agree, it's super dependable
I just came back from Jamaica and the Toyota Van's there from Japan are not in America they would be perfect, and also the Toyota buses. I wish they were here.
Thanks. Very informative. I think you're going to need a bigger garage for all your adventure vehicles. LOL.
Totally agree with your assessment of vans sold in the US. Very sad state. It's like take it or leave it,
I would just get a used Grand Caravan. Was also available as the Dodge ram cargo, with steel windows and metal flat bed. Interior space beat the sienna,Odyssey and cheaper. It will blend with the decor and nobody will notice.
Sounds like a plan. I like the GC.
Great video, I have also drooled over foreign vans we have no access to. The Chevy Astro and GMC Safari came close in styling, available Awd and mid size room and reliability. But they are no longer made and are hard to come by in decent shape.
I agree on the Safari/Astro
Everything you said about modern North American vans, I agree.
I'll have to look at those.
💯%agree about the american high top vans-UGLY Saw lots of the Nissan /Toyota mini vans in the Caribbean. Perfect for camper van.😀
Thanks for sharing!
I see a 4x4 Delica quite regularly (LHD) over on Valley View and Russel area. Pretty sure it came from Canada.
I don't think I would want to try full time in any platform that I couldn't stand up in. Yes, prices are through the roof.
Hey Steve, have you checked out Duncan Imports in Nashville, TN? They specialize in Japanese imports and have a huge selection of Delicas and Hiaces, as well as some other models. And they don’t require a 2nd mortgage either.
I will check it out.
Vans are great.
Great video! Wish Subaru made a van.
You and me both!
Thoughts?
Yes. I too can always convert my 4 runner back to original. i kept all the parts.
You didn’t ask me, but I think that is an excellent idea.
I’m living in a 2003 town and country and it’s pretty comfortable
another awesome production Senor Steve! "Jaunts" word of the day. I think because of my back and knees (58 in november) a high top is a must. Is their a high top suited for a fella 5'9 that dosent hit 7 foot cali rule? Also those euro vans that you mentioned, probably would have to consider a cassete style toilet correct?
Any rv toilet is doable in the euro style vans.
Fiberine in LA does high tops for Sienna's adds about 10"
I agree, the hate the look of the new vans. I thought I was the only one who hated the new look! Maybe its because I loved the old ones (I am your age too). I loved the conversions and had dreamed of having one in the 70s.
The proverbial "shaggin wagon"
Whats your take on the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica awd? they had me at stow & go. lol
I actually did not know they made it in awd. I looked and they make lift kits for them. Not "dreamy" upon first inspection though. Worth a look, I'd say.
the Previa is one of the most dangerous cars in a crash you can get.
Naw, they're fine.
@@XplorerSteveDIY oki doki, but you won't see me in one. IIHS gave it a "poor" rating.
that Sienna is much nicer.
What about a chevy or GMC Astro/Safari? Those were available until 2k I think and 4x4 was available.
I like those AWD. There are some nice examples. out thee to be sure.
Have you looked at the Mercedes Metris LWB version?
Yes. Like it and it is a great size.
I've been contemplating building out my 2005 Hyundai Tucson but I think it is just to small. I will probably wind up buying something else. What is your take on truck campers? Great video as always!
Go for it! Truck campers are great.
No offense taken. Great video ✌🏼
4321 Dud 😂😂😂 watch out Steve! My loyal friends shall defend my van!
@@StaticCamperVan Absolutely Static...this guy can’t even spell explorer! 😁
What about an early 2000's T1N shorty Sprinter? I've seen them lifted and even made 4wd. They have that stubby front you like and if you found a low roof it wouldn't look like a beluga. 😁
By the way, I have the last version Xplorer made before shutting down. The 2003 Xtreme was built on the Freightliner Sprinter chassis (when they stopped making the Dodge vans). I bought it last year and have never found another one like mine. I have all the original paperwork for it too.
Cool idea
How do you feel about the VW camper vans, such as the California edition ? Unfortunately they aren’t sold in the US. Or what about the Dodge Sprinter T1N ? I do agree with you . These European style vans aren’t exciting and are oddly shaped. I wish Dodge and Chevy vans had a bit of an upgrade for style etc.
The VW's are already nicely built. I like the Sprinters. It's just me so this is my own take.
Toyota should being the Hiace and proace to the states.
They would sell well.
Those Nissan Vans are popular in Mexico!
I wonder if the will be approved to come over here. Haven't seen on e though.
@@XplorerSteveDIY I would not bet on it! Bummer we cannot get them here...
Steve, what about the AWD Chevy/GMC Astro/Safari?
Those are a great platform. I looked for one some time ago but could not find a low mileage one at the time.
Not a bad option, Just wish US would put more into them. Current models have zero charm.
How about Volkwagon Westfalia? They look cool souped up but heard they are pain to maintain tho. Best!
Already built out....
You say Transit Connect/NV style vans are too small, then talk fondly about all the Japanese small vans like the Delica :P
Naw. Small is okay. I mentioned the NV200 cost benefit analysis. They are small with no ground clearance or 4wd. Element van life makes good use of his, but not on my dream platform list non the less.
@@XplorerSteveDIY Boulder Offroad makes a 2.5" lift kit for the NV200, so larger tires with a little more ground clearance might be possible.
Suzuki Jimny .... What are your thoughts 🤔
The Jimmy seems to be a formidable 4x4 to be sure, but looks too small for a camper conversion.
I am disappointed you didn't include any VW Westphalia versions? The Synchro Vanagon from the 80's was pretty cool!😀👍🔥
I think he did show one (with a "pop top" on it....
I love those, but they are already about as nicely appointed a camper van you will ever see. I said it here.
I had a Delica when I lived in Taiwan but unfortunately it was 2WD.
Toyota hi ace is a very nice van I have it experience drove it in the Philippines, but I don't think I can drive that in the freeway of the US not that safe though
What about sprinter van?
Not on the list.
Do a delica d5 van build
Would love a new e350 sports mobile if I ever win a huge lottery 🤣
Dajiban forever!
🖒😄
😁😁😁
You forgot Chevrolet astro van/ Gmc safari best van ever!
I like those but "dream platforms" are a personal choice to be sure.
TDB!!!
I have two Hyundai Elantra's parked out front at the moment. They are good.
@@XplorerSteveDIY Very dependable cars, especially for the kids !!
@10:23 Thank me later
I didn't watch your video because of the commercials! Thumbs down! No more u-tube commercials!!!
