How much would a job like this cost? I was looking to replace my tub, but after seeing this video and seeing the results are quite good. I think this would be the best route for me that am on slim budget.
Dang thats a lot of steps. Plus all the supplies you use. I would think you have to buy all that in bulk or you wouldn't make any money. I never knew you could scrub to hard cleaning your tub. Good to know...
Yes on fiberglass and pressed steel you can scrub to hard and they also fill out when abrasive cleaners like comet or Ajax are used! It’s like scrubbing a fine grit sand paper on the surface. Yes material is purchased in bulk but most materials purchased last through multiple jobs. This job was $800 and materials were about $100. Especially since some were purchased from prior jobs.
Thanks for this video! Now I know it must be sanded beforehand. They (management and maintenance)re-glazed my tub and the tub was still wet with water. Therefore I believe they didn't sand it either. The bubbles came up soon. Thank you so much. Now I know what to tell them which should be their job anyway.
Good job bro! I work for miracle method in san diego. I use the graco gun with a 3M cup. Looks like you take forever to prep and spray I can do a cast iron tub, in 1 hour and a half, clean up and everything. Fast is production. You know that!
Thanks man! Cast iron tub with no damage or repairs can be done in about two hours for sure. However, as you can see in this video this is a fiberglass bathtub shower unit that was coated before that required sanding and primer. To me fast is production but too fast is quality control and unnecessary mistakes. I like to take my time. I work for myself and don’t rush. I am not worried about squeezing in as many jobs in a day.
Wow! This is so cool. I just had my son’s bathroom completely redone, it costed me 16,000, but definitely all this painting would be worse it to save some money if it was the case for us, love your work, if I was a man I think I would work with construction!
In my kids’ bathroom they have a fiberglass tub/shower combo like these and my 4 year old dropped a bath toy and it chipped the tub... is there a way to fix that?
Yes, is the chip all the way through? You can check out the video I have on Fiberglass crack repairs and you can do that same thing with the chip. Let me know if you have any other questions. ua-cam.com/video/sF3q4nwIEUI/v-deo.html
Hey Danny, that is great. As a point of consideration, how much could I expect to pay someone like you to do the job for me as opposed to replacing the unit?
Hi, great video. Lots of good information! I am about to do this on two tub surrounds in my house here in NH. I have 2 sprayers, One is an airless Graco 360DSP which has a 4" fan tip or a 12" fan tip and two speeds. I normally use it with the big tip on high speed for wall paint. My other sprayer is an HVLP Devilbiss FLG4 with a bunch of tips. It has 1.4, 1.5, 1.8, and 2.2 tips. I normally spray cabinets, doors, and trim with the 1.8 but that requires thinning most material. I use a Ford #4 cup which measures the viscosity-thickness of the paint so I can get it to the thickness that sprays well. I will shoot the 1,2,3 primer with the airless. Graco says it sprays anything without thinning, which is great because I 1,2,3, trhinned with some water on my cabinets and it took forever to harden up. In checking I saw some other folks asked about polishing and repairing Krylon. I see that once it is cured can it be fine sanded, compounded and polished? Does it normally cure to a shine?
I am an automotive refinisher.. just a few questions. . Could I use a gravity-fed HVLP spray gun with a 1.4 tip? If not what size tip are you using? I appreciate the video
What kind of nozzle do you use for that because I have a fuji pro but it is by gravity and my nozzle is 1.4 or I need to buy another gun that is like yours
Looks amazing! One suggestion I’d make for future videos is better lighting. It was really difficult to see the detail in the tubs clearly in the before shots.
I've reglazed a fiberglass tub with enclosure. I cleaned, sanded with 150 grit, tact cloth, primered, and then applied rust oleum 2 part. I've noticed I've developed a rough surface. Could this be caused by not letting part A and B set up before applying, or was my prep not thorough? Thank you for your time and professional opinion.
Could be a few things..might need to be thinned out. Could be spraying too far from surface. Possibility the surface was not cleaned thoroughly and wiped with a tack cloth before spraying
What air cap size do you use on the titan? I have a fuji q5 platinum i use for auto body. I use .8, 1.0, and 1.3 air caps for primer base and clear. Would i need a 1.5 or 1.8 air cap to refinish a shower surround?
The bathtub in my apartment had a small crack in the bottom so it was resurfaced the other day. I waited 48 hours and after the first shower the crack is already back. I think it’s because it’s so uneven underneath. Any suggestions?
Danny, they looked amazing! What a change. Thanks for the videos, but how do you manage to wear white doing all this work and stay looking so clean? Good work and keep up the videos.
Polane is pretty good but extremely expensive. I currently use Resurface Solutions which is ISO Free. You should check Polane and isocyanates.I buy Resurface solutions by the gallon.
Hey all. I just went to Titan's website and looked up the Maxum II projector sets. The #3 set that is shown is these videos has a .051" tip, which is 1.3 mm size. Auto guns like I have will use a 1.3 or 1.4 for basecoat and smaller for clear. They use a 1.8 for heavier material like primer. I have used a 1.8 for latex which I have to thin down. I'm surprised the Zinsser 1,2,3 will even flow at high volume low pressure (HVLP), it's thick. I have used 1,2,3 thinned this spring, but it took forever to dry in my humid cold basement. Once dry though it sealed and was a nice base for my paint. Hope I am not being a jerk by adding to your comment feed! Thanks
I use the 20 oz spray can Zinsser 1-2-3 with the wide nozzle. Sprays amazing. Available at Home Depot. If you ever have a problem with primer drying make sure to use your fune extractor to suck the moisture out of the room. Helps with dry time tremendously. I use a #3 tip for my top coat.
@@DPTubs I sprayed it with my gun. 2 coats. No problem. Waited a bit, knocked it down with 400 sandpaper. Mixed up the Krylon Tub & Tile and put on 3 coats. I used a 1.5 tip because the Krylon was thinner than the latex I have been shooting on my cabinet fronts and trim. They have been thinned and shot with a 1.8. Also I wanted to remark that I was concerned about the bits and pieces that I found in the Part B can of the Krylon. It was really a lot of bits. So much so, that it would clog my filters. In hindsight I wish I had brought out my cooking strainer, that would have grabbed the bits and allowed me to filter the 2 part epoxy a bit quicker. The epoxy covered well, it's very shiny. I got a bit of pebble grain in the finish. So if it does not level I will probably polish it up to get it smother.
Nice work..! I have a tub and shower that needs this. Its 20 years old and in good shape but the white has slowly yellowed over the years. there is no damage. cracks or wear through marks. What is the estimated cost for this to hire a professional like yourself?
❓❓ I repaired a tub shower and painted with krylon tub & tile but the finish turned out chalky compared the the original super shiny finish.. is there a way to shine up the repaired area to look and feel less chalky?
What kind of primer should be used I also spray tubs but for the most part I just sand or acid etch .is there something in the TDS that would give me an indication of what primer will work on tubs also does the primer need to be sanded or just spray over it .
Al S ALWAYS sand the primer with a high grit of 600-800 to kick down any dust bumps and then vaccum it out then tack cloth. If you don’t sand and tack cloth you will have roughness in your final coat. What supplier do you use for top coat?
Nice work sir! I travel painting doing residential work, been looking to do my tub and possibly offer to customers if my first go around turns out as planned. I do have a question, my tub in particular is a bit slickery and would like to add some 'traction' to the floor of the tub. Any applications available to add a grit of some kind so I don't end up like a turtle on my back?
Danny, thanks for taking the time to share this with all of us here on the web. I had one question though, is it normal to use the "Bulls eye" general paint primer before applying an epoxy coating? I'm not a chemist, but for some reason was under the impression an "epoxy specific" primer had to be used. Obviously that's not the case though since you've had great success with it.
Hi Jonah..Thanks for the comment. That’s a great question. The best way to answer that is for me to make it clear on how or why I use the primer. I use the primer simply as a sealer not for adhesion. Even though the surfaces are thoroughly cleaned washed there are times were certain things cannot be seen to the naked eye. The primer sealer when sprayed makes the surface very uniform in color as well. So when sprayed and dried I am able to see if there was anything during cleaning that was potentially missed or silicone reaction things of that sort. When sprayed on tile it also helps seal the grout. There is no negative reaction with the bull’s-eye primer and the reglazing materials that I use. Now if you want a primer that is made for adhesion purposes then I would recommend using a primer that is from the same manufacture as a Reglazing Material. However a bonding agent or adhesion promoter can do that job as well. For example if I apply a clear liquid bonding agent let that dry then spray the primer sealer then spray the finish topcoat I will be fine. Also noted: the more thinner one uses with their top coat the more negative reaction one will have with primers, bonding agents, etc. I rarely thin out my material unless absolutely necessary. Thinners or reducers are more of the problem than anything, IMO
Hello, Danny and thanks for the question Jonah .. what type of prime do you use or do you use paint with primer? Also do you have pictures or video a year after results? Thanks for the videos and the time for all the input you put into this page and answering questions.
When they are condominiums and multi unit the units didn’t have their own separate shut off. Also the material takes 48 hours to cure so they would have had to have the water off for 48 hours
What is that just a regular paint primer you can get a your hardware store? Can this be done with a roller? What are the downfalls for using a roller besides time?
Nice work... Did you start with 220 grit with orbital the p400 by hand (dry), primer, then finish coat. How long for 100% cure time after final coating * Does the sticky coat mess with the uncovered sheetrock?
Yes 220 orbital Yes 400 by hand on primer 48 hours for cure to use with water 5 days for 100% complete cure I generally mask 24” around and use an exhaust fan / fine extractor seen in one of my other videos. If it’s dark painted walls then I cover more. Krylon is not super sticky like other coatings

I like Krylon and I have used a few. Midwest Chemicals has the best overall product for the money. I like the 1:1 ratio of Midwest as well. I like Krylon for Vegas because it’s “wet” enough for the heat and doesn’t need to be thinned as much. Very thick. A bit more expensive because it only comes in quarts but holds up very well.
Hey thanks for this vid. Im getting ready to spray my clawfoot. I was wondering though if you have to thin the krylon stuff with • Xylene or acetone to have it go through the sprayer smoothly?
I have been using Krylon for over two years and I have never send the product once and I also live in Las Vegas with extreme heat. Generally you can send the product with anything that it’s recommended to clean up with
I'm looking to further my education. I come across two schools: Topkote and Integrity Coatings. Before making a decision, what's your take on these schools?
Had it done, have a bubble and some specks sprayed over. Also should the tub be smooth? Mind is not. I live in a retirement community & feel things are not done correctly .
Nice! Those came out awesome. What PSI are you using to spray with? I know you said something a little high. Are you talking like 40 psi's or even higher?
I currently use Resurface Solutions. I made a video on my channel showing how I mix the material and what it is. If you want something over the counter then I would look into POLANE from Sherwin Williams
My tub is an insert and has a textured bottom for safety. How do you go about handling that since you can't really sand since it's not smooth? Or does that matter? Due to mobility problems we'll be switching to a walk in shower. Any suggestions?
No! Cast iron I will acid wash. The cast iron is the same process as the presses steel tubs. I have a couple videos showing the bathtub Reglazing on steel tubs.
@@DPTubs Awesome! I will watch those. Thank you! What is the expected lifetime of the reglazing for a cast iron tub? And how does it compare to the epoxy pour on products ? Do you recommend this painting method you use, as opposed to pouring the epoxy?
Hey man, without any experience, do you think this is something I could learn how to do fairly easily? I know there are levels to it- meaning that your quality and craftsmanship may not be immediately attainable for someone like me. Do you feel like this is something I can learn how to do?
100% I believe you can do it! Pay attention to the steps and then go to a salvage yard or construction sites that are throwing away old tubs or sinks and practice on them.
Thanks for the informative video. I’m just a DIY’er and am going to refinish my fiberglass tub/shower enclosure (actually looks exactly the same as the one in this video) I have a Titan 115 HVLP with a Maxum II gun. What size projector do you use and what air flow and paint setting do you use?
Yet again amazing at the difference before and after loving it - having my current bath ripped out and replaced with a walk in shower lol
Can I ask, what did the replacement cost? (Not trying to get in your business, but thinking about doing this to a room I want to AirBnB.)
Creative and resourceful way to divert the drip. They look great...another job well done!

I like Krylon for Vegas because it’s “wet” enough for the heat and doesn’t need to be thinned as much. Very thick. A bit more expensive because it only comes in quarts but holds up very well.
Great job. Excellent result. What kind of primer are you using?
Zinser 1-2-3
Thank you a lot.
Is the finish slippery like a new tub from the store or rough/needs sanding?
Should be smooth. Slippery comes from shampoos and soaps. A texture can be added to the bottom if requested
my tub has been glazed but it's peeling. Can I just send or do i need to peel with chemicals?
You can sand it but you may still be able to see the area that peeled. Also if it peeled sanding may remove other loose areas.
Generally you can send the product with anything that it’s recommended to clean up with
The krylon product does not require a primer. Why do you use a primer?
What type of material is this and what brand and where can I buy it? Thank you for the Great video.
I am using the same sprayer as you what pressure and flow setting are you using for primer and paint
Great video, what model compressor do you use
Robert Smith Titan Capspray 75 or 110 HVLP
I'm looking to further my education. I come across two schools: Topkote and Integrity Coatings. Before making a decision, what's your take on these schools?
What kind of schooling? I offer zoom classes. Email me
Had it done, have a bubble and some specks sprayed over. Also should the tub be smooth? Mind is not.
I live in a retirement community & feel things are not done correctly .
Thank you for sharing. What was your cleanup process for the epoxy, acetone? I'm hoping to not trash my sprayer, any tips?
What sprayer do you have?
@@DPTubs Its a graco nova
looking good.I was wondering what kind of primer and where you get them at?
DIY primer you can use Zinser Primers at Home Depot
@@DPTubs thank you
No problem. Try Zinser 1-2-3
Nice! Those came out awesome. What PSI are you using to spray with? I know you said something a little high. Are you talking like 40 psi's or even higher?
HVLP sprayers and compressors are usually low pressure, usually less than 5 psi
Can u do a video on how to mix the paint
Yes coming very soon just filmed it in a new video using Polane!
What primer do you use? I'm intending to take on this project and want a long lasting finish. Thanks
What do you mean handling? Cleaning the bottom or Reglazing the bottom?
@@DPTubs Do you sand the tub bottom when it's textured?
Awesome job! Very professional! is this the same process for a cast iron tub?
I am not to familiar with the pouring methods. However, I like the control and uniformity of the spray application.
Great video bro! Do I need a hvlp sprayer or can I use a regular sprayer?
I only know of using an HVLP..not sure how well the material will be applied with anything else
why just did not turn off the water to stop the dripping?
I want to learn how to fix the paint an wats the best paint to use
How long did this one take??
Where do you buy the plastic to cover the toilet and sink ?
Home Depot
What primer do you use ? Also what topkote do you use ?
I use a Midwest chemicals, Krylon, and Resurface Solutions.
@@DPTubs thank you ! Yes I will do just that.
Tip #3 I also show my gun settings on my paint spraying video. Check it out and let me know what you think!
How do you clean the gun? Assuming the Krylon is a 2 part?
I clean the gun with lacquer thinner
@@DPTubs Thanks, appreciate it!
