You didn't just make it "like new", you made it BETTER than new, this is an astonishing level of care and attention to detail I'd never even considered for old tech restoration. Just, bravo
Your restorations are truly next level. That display panel swap is something else! I've never seen someone go that far to get such a factory-like result.

Hey thanks so much for the tip! The notes in the video weren't really referring to the font itself, more the fact that even if I had gotten the right font, there are normal distortions in the icons in some cases.
There is something soothing about seeing your restoration videos just the sheer work requried for modeling all the parts instead of cutting up known parts absolutly loved it also the taking no shortcuts really shows your passion, love your work and videos also thanks for showing the cool retro tech
Really glad you enjoyed it and totally - I’m rarely one to physically modify something when I can fabricate something new. It’s all part of the love of the hobby for me.
Absolutely masterful restoration. I love how thorough you were, with even going as far as to replace the ccfl on the new display and recreating the bracket just to accomodate for components. Suiper sick stuff. Great video definitely deserve more subs!
This is the first video of yours I have seen. This is simply amazing. I would have never known that wasn't a well kept OEM device. Your skills are what most of us that watch can only dream of having. I can't imagine the time you put into creating these videos!!
It's very rare i will stop watching something on a small screen and purposely watch it later on a big screen so i can properly enjoy it. Masterpiece. Make another video and i dare you to make it better.
6:56 This is what I love about projects like this. Doesn't matter how insanely obscure and hyper-specific the project is, there's someone out there that's made something for it for anyone else who happened to need that one specific thing. Whether it be a tool, program, or 3d model. You name it, some random nerd out there made it.
This is perfect. I love your attention to details! And the fact you are showing us and explaining the whole process. Keep it up man I'm eager to see another restorations on your channel!
Your work and attention to details is truly fantastic, I believe that you have honored the designers and engineers that have brought this product into existence, and knowing that you have breathed life into a dead and obsolete piece of tech is just mindblowing. Kudos to you sir! Also, if you might offer this service in the future, please hit me up, as I have several pieces of tech that need an expert hand such as yours.
Awesome high-level work. The 730T is from 1994. I'm searching for a 700T for a long time, maybe I am lucky some day. Actually my oldest one is a 360PE.
What an outstanding restoration. Attention to detail to that is so great to see, there's something extra satisfying about being more fastidious than budget conscious when it comes to details like getting the labels just so. True of doing as well as watching. Thanks for such a great video.
Subbed. I came into this video assuming that it would be more of a part swapping exercise with a donor machine, which most people do, even on really obscure hardware. Somehow they manage to get hold of more than 1 while the rest of the world didn't even know of its existence. The level of actual work and care that you put into your restoration sets you apart, and certainly deserves more love from the algorithm.
Thanks a lot for the printable files, it’s exactly what I’ve been waiting for. These tablets were used at my work back in the 90’s and custom modified with a hard case, once it was all removed it was near new but to secure the case the covers were all missing
The best restoration I’ve seen in a long time. I was thrilled to find out that the screen restoration was only half of the video. Watched it all in one breath. Good luck with your future projects!
That guy is like the ASMR slow-mo goat of electronics and perfection all combined into one. Man thanks God for the algorithm. First time on your channel and I'm loving it, it's like therapeutic at the same time, telling my ass, move out of your comfort zone. He's doing what most wouldn't, and even better than factory. Amazing work my friends. It's mind blowing seriously. The attention to details, wish you would be my life mentor. I have seen all types of restoration videos so to speak, in my life, but nothing compares to yours. Amazing work my friend, you're an artist, a master of your craft. So beautiful to see live and witness it. Sama-EL send his greetings. You should really think of opening some online courses or and academy

@@polymattI was the one that sold it to you at VCFSW. I was hoping that it could be restored but I never expected it to be this amazing. I got it to run PCDos with pen but not much more. Going with Windows touch was definitely the right option.

I had Dauphin DT-1 pen based PC of the same vintage I bought on close-out (After the company went out of business) in 1995. I was smaller than this unit but had a lot of features in common including the Operating System. This video brought back memories of seeing the 730T in a magazine and wanting it so badly, but it was way too expensive! The DTR-1 was a definitely the cheaper, but not better alternative. This was a great video to watch! Your work is very impressive and shows great attention to detail. This is my first time here, so I subbed in to see more!
Thanks so much and really appreciate the sub! I’ve got a few other restorations you might enjoy but love hearing about the Dauphin. I didn’t have one myself but had a friend who did and was just blown away that tiny little tablet ran windows. You still have it?
Sadly no… I cannot remember exactly what happened to it… I know that it was bellow the system requirements to run Windows 95 which came out soon after I bought it. I do remember switching to a SHARP Wizard organizer with pen input. The Dauphin might have gotten sold at a garage sale or given to a friend… Really can’t remember! The ONLY UA-camr I have seen do a video on it was Clint Basinger of on LGR. His house was wrecked by the recent hurricane so I don’t know if his unit survived, But check out his video, he really went all out on it!
this was awesome viewing - loved the full spectrum restore - design, mfg, screen board etc. - reminds me of Mend it Mark but comp related - gonna check the rest of your channel out, thanks.
This is the most extraordinary restoration video that I have ever seen or viewed in my 50 plus years in the Computer Sciences and Electronics services. You should be doing this full-time. I subbed your channel as I am gong to watch your old and new videos. :D
I love the Sony inspired design of the early thinkpad hardware. I am working on making a small gaming tablet using regular PC hardware, and I'd love to make it look similar to this tablet.
@@polymatt Thanks! It'd be nice to look at them, although I'll freehand model it because the hardware will be so different. By the way there was a PH meter built by Orion, their model 230A, that always reminded me of the Thinkpad design language. I'll pull inspiration from that as well.
Really wonderful work here, congrats on the clearly very successful undertaking. I also have to say I love your attitude throughout this - clearly aware of your own privileged level of skill and access to equipment and resources, so that you at every step go the extra little bit further to make things more easily available to anyone who might want to undertake a similar project. Really excellent stuff.
Really appreciate that and glad it comes across. In my next videos I really want to focus more on the multiple ways of taking on a project given time, budget, access to tools, etc.

Incredible work as always from the "My Mechanics" of electronics restoration. Soon enough you'll be getting PCBway to machine enclosures for you! Would love a cost and time breakdown, even if I know both would be eyepopping.
Thank you! On the cost side I wouldn't know where to start. The whole project did take me about 3 months, but a lot of that is spent waiting on parts and pieces to be delivered, refining models, etc. The video took me about a week to put together after completing the project - had about 12 hours worth of footage. I also do all of this part time, but hey, it's a labor of love.

You probably wouldn’t need to swap the LCD unless it’s physically damaged. A lot of times you can just replace the polarizer itself as it tends to get that “vinegar syndrome”. Vertical lines may be due to aging capacitors if there is no physical damage.
Better than new, that rubberized coating really was the absolute worst. I am pretty sure every single device I have ever seen that used it turned into a sticky, ugly mess. For anyone reading this that likes restorations like this, a sub here is well worth the moment it takes to click, some awesome restorations here.
nice work, ive played with one of them before, my local fire department had one that they wanted it imaged and preserved since the drive was going out. luckily as the hard drive was just a PCMCIA drive, i got a PCMCIA to CF-Flash adapter, and just imaged the drive to the CF-Card (i also have a backup on my server as well of the image), so now it just runs off the CF-Card instead of the old mechanical drive.
is it just serendipity that the new screens pins where the same as those expected on the motherboard? or is it more a function of the screen being monochrome and thus they all only have the same general pins
It was definitely a bit of luck that the actual connector was the same but the pinout (15 pin) is super common - even for color. If you look at the original it was a very different connector and actually had 16 pins but one was left out. The 15 pin molex was the best case scenario as I had the tools to do it. Some LCDs had weird flat connectors with 20+ pins so even though only 15 would be used it would have been a huge paint to fit it.
This is totally next level. I love the idea of modeling (I always thought about 3D scanning, because access to originals is limited) but when it's possible to use the original, what you did is amazing. Is there a "Google for retro computer 3D parts?"
Jesus, that thing really is just a PC shoved into a box. I'm in that awkward "too young and too old" to have ever had those specific models. When I finally got into the tablet/pda market, they were clearly different from PC's by that point, and then Smart phones became a thing, and I've just never needed a tablet since
Back in '93 I didn't have a need for this thing. I was still playing Doom over dialup. I love exploring these things because a lot of them I wasnt exposed to!
