There, I “Fixed” it…
Thanks to PCBWay.com for sponsoring this video. Right before heading off for the holiday, I agreed to fix a (somewhat) old dancing tree. As with most of my projects it got WAY more involved than I expected, especially when I wanted to add in new functionality...

Thanks to PCBWay.com for sponsoring this video. After picking this thing up at VCF Southwest this past year, I didn't know what I was getting into, but I knew it wasn't going to be easy. This is one of the first IBM machines to bear the ThinkPad name. It's a 730T 486 tablet computer from 1993 - and it needs a lot of work... Fixing an $800,000 Laptop?
Переглядів 90 тис.5 місяців тому
I got my hands on a really special IBM ThinkPad 360PE - One of the first convertible tablet computers IBM ever made. There's a famous one on eBay listed for over $800,000 at the time of this posting - but is it worth it? Or even close? Let's take a look at this very cool piece of history and walk through the repairs that I need to do to bring it back to working order... which proves a bit more ...

3D Printing an “Apple” BlueSCSI v2 Case
Переглядів 2,4 тис.Рік тому
With the #BlueSCSI v2 out, I had to think of a good way to make it blend in to my retro setup and a custom case seemed like the right thing to do! I love Apple's late 80s & early 90s design language so I decided to give it a shot. In this video I'll show you how I laid out the case in CAD and the whole process for a 3D resin print including my techniques with color matching the resin. Hope you ...
Fully Restoring the Iconic IBM ThinkPad 701C Butterfly Laptop from 1995

When @RetroGameCouch reached out and told me he found a rare 1995 IBM ThinkPad 701C laptop and asked if I wanted to do a restoration, I couldn't say no! I've worked on many of these over the years and even run a website dedicated to restoring them at 701c.org. For the first time, I get to show my full process of tearing it down completely and building it back up like new using all the tips and ...

Reverse Engineering a ThinkPad Battery - And making a Perfect Clone
This belongs in a museum
Man, Civvie 11 needs to buy you a NutraLoaf…would love to see this team-up
I love what you’ve done with the place. Speaking of place, this would be the ideal laptop for home defense. Wood next? :)
I love everything about this…taking something old and making it like new again (better than new, let’s be honest). The pacing, the calmness, the music. Shut up and take my sub ❤
Hey thanks so much for the sub and glad you’re enjoying the videos!
ukrposhta mentioned🎉🎉🎉
💯
Why wouldn't you use the original cell size?
All this for a laptop that can't even playback this video in full resolution . . . YOU'RE MY HERO
Besides the board, it's more of recreation than a restoration. So awesome though, killer job!
Amazing job
Can you explain why at 23:49 a sheet of dry transfer of simple decals costs $150? I feel like I'm missing something here..
Dry transfers are done only with specialized printers or a pretty involved process by commercial print houses. I’ve yet to find a method that has the same resolution and quality aside from screen or laser printing directly onto the part.
where i can find these dry transfer sheets?
They need to be printed using a special process usually only found at commercial print shops. If you search online you may be able to find a service that will print dry transfers near you.
Great work a brilliant restoration and I think it's better than it was originally
This guy should be the only one to restore any thing
That’s a Thickpad not Thinkpad😂
awesome job!
Thanks!
This is so Merry-Xmasy! 😇BTW, Happy New Year, Matt !🥳
What 3d modelling software is that?
It’s called Shapr3D. Love it.
@polymatt Thanks for the reply! I will have to give it a go. Looks like a really clean and intuitive UI.
You're a genius!
Haha, thanks so much!
Sheer Brilliance, the finesse in your work is literally out of the world, I don't think that even if IBM would have tried to restore this, they would have done this level of justice with it.
Really appreciate the kind words and glad you enjoyed the video!
Lovely :)
Thank you! 😊
Thanks for your great work in 2024. Can't wait to see your new ideas in 2025. Happy new year!
Happy New Year!
The moment you said Bold, I knew what was coming. But, I couldn't be too sure, and I do enjoy the song.
It is a great song :)
this is nsfw... i came.
This is a Fallout Machine....use it to open a vault door
💯
Hat’s off
Amazing restoration! Which software do you use for your 3D modelling?
Thanks! I use Shapr3D.
Great video! Well, almost till the end.
😁
So impressed. You built new batteries! Just an incredible homage to the original device.
Thanks so much and glad you enjoyed it! I feel like batteries are one things that get overlooked a lot in restorations. Gotta give ‘em some love too 😁
New to your channel. The level of details and explanation of everything is extremely appreciated! Also, you must have an insane amount of patience setting up all these various shots while simultaneously working on the restoration. Nothing is half-assed or compromised. Thank you for sharing your work, I definitely learned a couple of new things that I can't wait to learn more about.
That’s awesome, I’ve learned so much watching others so really happy when I can pass some on. Glad you’re enjoying the videos!
Great video, if I may just suggest a little more lighting during the teardown parts?
Appreciate the feedback, I’m always looking for ways to improve and I agree that I can definitely improve on the lighting side when substance is needed over style :)
Finally someone who restore old electronics without Windex.
Now I know whom I should go to if the world is destroyed and needs restoration. The amount of work, dedication, patience and attention to detail; God level.
Haha thanks so much! If anyone needs super detailed restorations on obsolete machines you know where to look 😂
Rees told me to say that Rees sent me.
Nice! Thanks for checking it out!
Es el trabajo electrónico mas asombroso que he visto en mi vida. Es increible tu nivel técnico y de experiencia. Bravísimo!!!
Amazing
🙏
I!m pretty sure that, even if IBM itself wants to restore it, they couldn't make any better than this. Huge respect.
Mine was black :) still remember the slow color screen :)
Respect for your work and dedication.
God I hate font scrolling
Have pcbway 3d print the housings out of titanium.
i see.. that red button make sense now
which 3d modeling software are you using?
Hey, it’s called Shapr3D
Should have rewired it for a rechargeable battery also.
Yeah was going to but I was going to design and 3D print a modified battery holder to match. Just ran out of time!
Chip tunes are the best
💯
have a T500 with the fatal flaw in the screen alloy frame (breaking in the left hinge) and have bought in the past two frames and been wondering for how long - maybe 3d printing is the answer
How many hours did you spend on restoration, and what was the span from date of purchase to completion.
Ooh that’s a tough one. I did it over the course of about 2 months, maybe 4 to 8 hours per week? But everything is slower when you’re shooting footage as well. It was about 3 months from when I purchased it to completion but this is just a hobby that I only have limited time to dedicate… which is why I end up publishing a new video every 2 to 3 months.
Can you upgrade the hardware with modren motherboard , ssd hard disk , ram..... I have a 701c laptop but I wounder if someone could upgrade it with modern hardware

@@polymatt Thank you
Is this art? I think this is art.
Are you going to VCF SoCal?
I’d love to but conventions are usually always a game time decision. I’ll put out a post here and on Instagram when I know!
@@polymatt The boy & I will make the 90 min trek from Thousand Oaks. I'm also considering running an exhibitor table, "Modern Hardware, Vintage Software" (enabling sound, graphics, networking on modern machines running DOS on bare metal). I'll also have some machines for the consignment table.
Appreciate tye Rock Roll, thought it was gonna get me "Wham"d.
I’ve been told that might create an international incident 😅
