Thank you for this tutorial Ms Fox. It's still proving helpful two years later. I got a System 7 Mac virtualized on my PopOS laptop with full networking by following your exact steps. It's only missing proper sound, playing PC speaker beeps instead. Your instructions helped me configure SheepShaver for Mac 9.0.4 as well, which has working sound and allowed me to install vintage PowerPC games such as Interplay's Descent. What a treat!
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I put all my classic Mac stuff into Stuffit archives and transferred them over to a PC 20 years ago (using AIM over my home network!). Was hoping someday to get be able to access this stuff again. Mission accomplished! An excellent video with instructions that are easy to follow! A+ Thanks again!
This video could not have come at a better time. I had just begun looking into setting up Basilisk II and needed a detailed walkthrough. This is perfect.
Got going in Crystal Crazy to gift the nostalgia of youth back to my girlfriend after decades of longing on her part. Such a beautiful thing to be able to revisit that wacky garden of sound and absurdity! Thank you so much :)
I haven't used Basilisk II since the early 2000s. Thank you for creating a great tutorial to help refresh my memory on how to use it. I look forward to watching all your videos.
Hi from New Zealand. What great information. I have spent many hours trying in vain to work out a way to transfer files from my MBPro to System 7 on Basilisk II. I wish I found this video first, it would have saved me many hours work
Great video, Kate! I especially appreciated the overview of configuring the network side of Basilisk, which I will do with my install this weekend. Keep up the great work!
Thank You! I watched this video when it first came out. Today a friend asked me about opening up an Aldus Pagemaker(!) file and converting it to a PDF. I'm rewatching your thorough instructions.
It's nice to see you both back. I used to use Basilisk II and Shapeshifter on my Amiga to emulate a 68k mac, my PC at the time emulated 68k a bit too slowly but so my Amiga did the trick.
I'm an existing Apple II fan and just got my first Classic Mac. I had no way to create images to get software on to my 68k mac. This tutorial completely helped me get up and running. I now have created new images that I use for both my Zip drive and the SCSI2SD volumes. THANK YOU!
Alright Ms. Fox, consider this the bookmark comment... we're looking to emulate Laurie Anderson's Puppet Motel on a modern Mac, we'll get back to you on the results (; excellent presentation by the way, love the atmosphere of the show!
I appreciate the time and effort you put in your videos, they’re excellent. I’ve been a Mac addict since my parents bought me a pb 145b back in the early 90s. I have a couple of PowerBooks, a PB100, the OG, and a pb 180. The pb 100 needs a new HD, it was working a few years ago, the 180 still runs, a little beat up but it’s still here w me. I also have an SE/30, a G4 , the silver one, a Mac Pro 5,1 that I use for most of my work when home. My m1 is attached to a 27 Thunderbolt Display via an adapter. I enjoy using those old systems. Again, good stuff. Muy bien bien.
Oh wow .. I remember Basilisk II. I'm amazed it's still around. I used to keep a copy on a Zip disk and boot it up in the computer labs at college. At the time, OSX had /just/ come out and OS 7.5 was still somewhat viable. A 50MB virtual hard disk on a zip disk was basically my roaming profile with all my personal settings. I'd have to imagine that these days, there's no way a campus computer lab PC would allow you to run anything off a portable drive.
Finally a good tutorial on how to setup Basilisk II. Maybe it's a Mac thing, but on PC you can mount HDA-images without any issue. Even without changing file extension to DSK.
Hi, Kate! Thanx for this! Super easy for a non-techie like me to follow too. But the first link to the RaSCSI Bootstrap Image seems to be broken/moved/denied, and the second leads to a blank macintoshgarden page. Could you please update? Thanx again!
I got Sheepshaver on my 2020 MacBook Pro, with Infini-D, Illustrator, Photoshop, EIAS, Form-Z, and others all installed. I'd love to get System 7 on there as well.
Both the MacOS 7.6.1 ISO and the Bootstrap files are showing up as MD5's and are both missing, empty, and incapable of being extracted as ZIP files. Also the .rom drive is showing up as "Not Found!" in the Basilisk2 GUI. Please help!
I used to use System 7 and 8 on Amiga 4000 via ShapeShifter (SheepShaver / Basilisk predecessor), mostly to browse internet with Netscape Navigator. :)
@@MacintoshLibrarian it was a great solution for internet, and some other stuff, where the Amiga didn't have proper software :-) otherwise, the A4000 was far more powerful - 3d graphics, animation, music, ... I use Amigas to this day, maybe if you're interested check out my channel/blog "AMIGA alive" :-) thanks for the nice video!
About a year ago I bought a 2011 mac mini... I was hoping to use it as an emulator box for sheepshaver and Basilisk. By the time it arrived I'd found out how to get it working on my PC though. I was so excited going through macintosh garden and downloading all my old favourite games from when I was a kid. Back in the day Pathways into darkness and Marathon were my favourites on my Mac IIsi... I ended up getting an FPU card for it but had no idea at the time that it needed drivers to work...
Basilisk, now that's a name I haven't heard of in a long time. Lol think the last time I spent it up what is to play Barney Carnage. Do you have a tutorial for the power PC version?? Never got that running but that was on bulldozer architecture, haven't tried it on my AM4 system yet.
I know you said that Basilisk ii is mainly used for II Macs, I read somewhere that the classic Mac could be emulated. Seems, I can't. Maybe I'm missing something.
Thanks for this information i lean towards windows a lot but I would love to dabble with Mac stuff since I started DJing but there are certain things from classic macs that no longer work in modern macs, Also some software and vintage games as well that were long lost. but understanding the older macs would help me appreciate it more, keep up the awesome work!
Use MAME instead of Basilisk II because it’s now more accurate but you can use Basilisk II to copy over files. I have a Quadra 605 so it doesn’t matter

Hey, I want to use MacinTalk on OS 8 but it always say I need to put it in to the extensions Folder even tho it already is in the extensions folder. Can somebody help me ?
I considered using a Mac emulator for a while, but I have a hardware collection that covers just about the whole spectrum of Apple computers, so I can just use real computers.
I've done basically everything, but my basilisk II won't start, is it because I'm trying to use an ISO file? or are they all the same
they are the same roms :)

Same
It's the 7th download in the MacOS 7.6.1 ISO page. It's a zip archive, extract it and the proper toast file should appear.
