Thank you for this video. My uncle served with the Royal Artillery in the battle, in an anti-tank unit. Sadly, he was killed in battle on 16th. October 1944. In 2008 my brother and I visited my uncle's grave in the Overloon War Cemetery. We also visited the museum, which was indeed, very interesting.

I am honored to have met with mr. Trevor Lewis "Taffy" . He liberated my home town of Hamont-achel( Belgium) before moving to Overloon. As a kid I listened for hours with a translator about his stories about the liberation and Overloon. He was a Bren gunner. Overloon was hell...Remember the Bloedbeek.

You did a fantastic job on this battle. I was stationed in West Germany during the 1970s and visited Holland. I wish I had known about the War Museum in Overloon. I have never been in a war and am thankful for that. God bless all who died on both sides in the horrible war. They all had families. War is cruel and terrible. It is good that we are all in NATO to deter war. LTC Rick K.

I was stationed at vliegbasis volkel in the late 1960's, U.S. Air Force. I was amazed at all the equipment on display. I was told that after the war, the land owner gathered the equipment & started the museum. The Dutch people loved the American & British soldiers who liberated them. The older residents still remembered the "Hershey" chocolate bars given to them by the troops!

In the sixties almost everything was displayed in the open. Several items corroded. I was there as a child with my parents. Later with my own children and the last time I was there was a couple of years ago when I was on campingsite in that neighbourhood.
Then everything was restored and put inside of a large building. As you see in the magnificent film above. Very well done for somebody of his age. Nowadays there are also vehicles displayed from post WW2 such as the LARC the very big amfibious vehicle in the beginning of the Overloon museum tour he showed. This vehicle is from 1952. But anyway a very good show !

I first came to the museum as a kid and in those days there were almost no pavilions as you say. Just some woods and paths leading from one vehicle to the next. For children it felt like an adventure, you could really explore the area. I must admit I prefer it that way but I'm glad they finally were able to take them inside and restore them properly.
And I'm also glad that the B25 Mitchell was finally painted in proper colours instead of the terrible bright green it used to be :-)

In those days, each of the vehicles in the museum were outside, on the exact spot where they had been shot down. In the early 2000's however, they were joined with the Marshall Museum and gained a lot of allied vehicles. Also it was evident that the vehicles that were in the woods would not be there much longer if left to the elements so the decision was made to build the big hall where everything is now.

Once the battle started, where was Monty? There was no overall commander. Browning and Horrocks had no one to coordinate their maneuvers efforts. When Monty failed to capture Arnhem, he used the US 101AB as static troops to hold the Lower Rhein which was a complete waste of manpower and depleted their health by forcing them to sit in cold waterlogged trenches for over a month. Donald Burgett's book on Market Garden details this.

This I think, explain a much of what went wrong with Market Garden, but I still believe that it was not possible to drive a whole Corps up a single road without the Germans continually attacking the flanks, and so the whole operation depended on a lack of German resistance.

My Father took part in so many battles in Belgium and Holland during 1944 , I'm amazed he survived the more I dig into the details of what happened. Fights to flush out SS snipers in Brussels at the end of September with the White Brigade in 1944 and his love for the Dutch and Belgian people who were so kind to him and his unit particularly in Den Bosch and Apeldoorn .
