- Today, i will tell you guys about a big battle in the Netherlands were you probably never heard about.
I invest alot more time in making a video now and doing alot more research. So the video's will take longer for me to edit. But the outcome is worth it!
I want to thank the Overloon museum for making this video happen!
The staff is awesome and very helpful! Please give a look at their website. And if you ever visit the Netherlands, GO TO THE OVERLOON MUSEUM!
Website: www.oorlogsmuseum.nl/nl/
Location: The Netherlands, Overloon.
Hope you guys enjoy this video! And looking forward to show you guys the next place!
Thanks for watching!
Salute!

I DO NOT OWN ANY MUSIC IN THIS VIDEO! ALL RIGHTS GOES TO THE RIGHT OWNERS!
Thank you for this video. My uncle served with the Royal Artillery in the battle, in an anti-tank unit. Sadly, he was killed in battle on 16th. October 1944. In 2008 my brother and I visited my uncle's grave in the Overloon War Cemetery. We also visited the museum, which was indeed, very interesting.
What was the name of your uncle? Maybe i can visit his grave one day, and give it a face if you would like. You can allways contact me: svankammen1998@hotmail.nl
Just to let you know I visited Overloon and Cemetery at the end of March 2024 very well looked after.
@@neilmurray1359 that's good to know, thanks Neil.
My great uncle was a Sherman tank gunner in "A" Company, 17th Tank Battalion, 7th AD killed in action on 4 Oct 1944 while attacking towards Overloon. Thanks for the great video!!
What was his name, and do you know where he is burried? Maybe i can look him up. You can allways email me: svankammen1998@hotmail.nl
And thank you for the compliment!
@@SandervkHistory His name was Corporal William Davenport from Jellico, Tennessee. He was my grandmother's baby brother. His body was not recovered but his name is on the Wall of the Missing in the beautiful American Dutch cemetery in Margraten.
I am honored to have met with mr. Trevor Lewis "Taffy" . He liberated my home town of Hamont-achel( Belgium) before moving to Overloon. As a kid I listened for hours with a translator about his stories about the liberation and Overloon. He was a Bren gunner. Overloon was hell...Remember the Bloedbeek.
I've been to the Overloon museum several times. They have an excellent collection of rare vehicles. It is probably one of the most under-rated WW2 museums.
Indeed! Thats why i am so happy that this video got alot of attention!
My father was in the 7th Armored Division and was wounded in this battle in early October 1944 . He told just intense the battle. Took almost a year to recover from his wounds.
Was he injured in Vierlingsbeek where the 88s were standing?
Wow, that insane. Cant imagine fighting this rough battle... Thanks to your father for his service!
You did a fantastic job on this battle. I was stationed in West Germany during the 1970s and visited Holland. I wish I had known about the War Museum in Overloon. I have never been in a war and am thankful for that. God bless all who died on both sides in the horrible war. They all had families. War is cruel and terrible. It is good that we are all in NATO to deter war. LTC Rick K.
Thank you! Appreciate your comment. I 10000% agree with you!
So nice to see our youth so involved with WW2 history
Yes, and with my videos, i hope to inspire more to be interested in History!
I was stationed at vliegbasis volkel in the late 1960's, U.S. Air Force. I was amazed at all the equipment on display. I was told that after the war, the land owner gathered the equipment & started the museum. The Dutch people loved the American & British soldiers who liberated them. The older residents still remembered the "Hershey" chocolate bars given to them by the troops!
Awesome! And the Hershey bar is something we Dutch wont ever forget!
In the sixties almost everything was displayed in the open. Several items corroded. I was there as a child with my parents. Later with my own children and the last time I was there was a couple of years ago when I was on campingsite in that neighbourhood.
Then everything was restored and put inside of a large building. As you see in the magnificent film above. Very well done for somebody of his age. Nowadays there are also vehicles displayed from post WW2 such as the LARC the very big amfibious vehicle in the beginning of the Overloon museum tour he showed. This vehicle is from 1952. But anyway a very good show !
I was there in the 80's 7362 MUNSS
I live nearby and I can assure you it was not forgotten by me or anyone in Noord-Brabant. Great video!
Dankjewel! I also watch your youtube channel alot, you have some great topics! Thanks for the comment 👍
Inderdaad. Zeker niet terecht om deze slag als vergeten te bestempelen. Er staat niet voor niets een gigantisch museum
Geschiedenis … one of the most jaw breaking words in the Dutch language for an Englishman 😂 (it means history), if you ever want to amuse a Dutchman try saying it 👍
@@Aaronian99 Vraag elke Amerikaan of Brit, of ze van de slag gehoord hebben. 8/10 heeft er nog nooit van gehoord.

Thank you for making this. My wife's great uncle fought from D-Day to Overloon with 1st South Lancs. He sadly passed on 18th October 1944 in Overloon. We have his photo and his medals and been following his journey through the war. This really helps put things into prospective and thank you so much. RIP to all who never returned home 🙏
Thank you! Is he burried in the Overloon War Cemetery? If so, i could lay flowers next to his grave if you would like that.
You can contact me here: SandervkHistory@hotmail.com
@@SandervkHistory Wow really? that would be amazing and so kind of you but he is actually buried in the Venray war cemetery. thank you so much though and God bless you for the offer 🙏 keep up the amazing work and love the channel 👍
My Grandfather, Nelson "Dusty" Russell, was in the 7th Armored division apart of the battle of Overloon. I remember him telling me so many stories of WW2, he even game me a commerative coin given to him from that battle. I've looked and tried to find videos of this, and this is the first video I have found about it. Thankyou for making it and putting it up here for all to see and remember those in that battle!!! God bless!!!
My wife and I have been to Overloon and this museum. Awe inspiring, humbling, poignant.
It is indeed a expierence! Thank you
I'm new to your channel; found you via a ww2tv channel follower who rec'd your channel on a recent sidebar chat. This video is excellent; really appreciated all of your enthusiasm for the museum and its exhibits. It is haunting to see the skin tattoo and waterbox. So many sacrificed so much for our freedom and we're starting to forget. Please keep up the good work of bringing this important history to life. May God bless you.
Thank you so much! Really appreciate your kind words. I am happy to hear that my videos are important to people and it makes them realise again what the young soldiers sacrificed for us! I will keep it up! There will be new videos shortly. Been abit busy with some real life stuff atm. Thank you again and may god bless you! 🙏
You really did an amazing job with this one. Great work! This is an amazing museum, thanks for sharing! 👍
Thanks man! Put alot of effort in this one! Looking forward to your next video!
@@SandervkHistory It shows man, looks great. Thank you! 👊
I visited this museum in 1991 when I was cycle racing in the Netherlands as a 21 year old from New Zealand. It was amazing then and even better now. A lot of the machinery was rotting outside back then, the anti mine tank as an example. Looks like a lot of restoration has gone on. Thank you for the video, great job.
I first came to the museum as a kid and in those days there were almost no pavilions as you say. Just some woods and paths leading from one vehicle to the next. For children it felt like an adventure, you could really explore the area. I must admit I prefer it that way but I'm glad they finally were able to take them inside and restore them properly.
And I'm also glad that the B25 Mitchell was finally painted in proper colours instead of the terrible bright green it used to be :-)
Thats way before i was born. I think the museum is much different now. Definitly worth a visit! And thank you.
@@SandervkHistory it certainly is much different.. And it's indeed worth a visit. Hopefully Militracks 2022 will not be cancelled.
In those days, each of the vehicles in the museum were outside, on the exact spot where they had been shot down. In the early 2000's however, they were joined with the Marshall Museum and gained a lot of allied vehicles. Also it was evident that the vehicles that were in the woods would not be there much longer if left to the elements so the decision was made to build the big hall where everything is now.
@@SatumangoTheGreat Maybe you will see me there, if its not cancelled indeed.
I visited the museum several times in the early 1990s when I was at the nearby RAF Laarbruch. The internal museum was much smaller and the larger exhibits were all outside, viewed on a walking trail. Good to see the big items restored and inside.
Awesome to hear that! I am indeed glad they preserved it better than they used to.
Everyone should visit Overloon. I’ve visited the museum twice because there’s some much to see.
Sander, so great to see you’re getting better and better. Shows how much you love these topics.

Mooi om te zien dat de jeugd dit nog levendig houd. Vergeet nooit wat we te danken hebben aan de Canadezen,Americanen, Engelsen, Polen, en vele andere bevrijders. Onze vrijheid.
Good video! It's good to see that the exhibits have been moved under cover, they were all outside the last time I visited (late 1980's).
Thanks Gary! Yeah luckily they preserved the exhibits wel!! I recommend when you are close to the museum again, to pay it a visit.
Great video, well done and the museum tour was quite nice!
Thanks man! Appreciate that!
What a very interesting video. Can't understand why I didn't visit this museum and battle field when I was stationed at RAF Wildenrath, just over the border in the late 70s! It is definitely on my visit list when things start to open up again. Take care and thanks once again.
Thanks Philip! I assume you live across the channel. So it wont be to much effort for you travel. Thanks again!

Thanks you for watching! 👍
I visited the museum as a boy circa 1970 when my dad was in the army and posted nearby - great museum!!
Awesome to hear that! My Parents didnt even met eachother at that time. Awesome to see that the museum is still standing today.
Thank you for showing us the museum. The German resistance shows how impossible Market Garden was, and could only have succeeded if the Germans had not resisted. Montgomery gambled that the Germans would rather surrender than fight on, but he was wrong.
Thats indeed true! Cant imagine the fierce restistance of the Germans, the Allies still underestimated the German way to much.
@ger du
Once the battle started, where was Monty? There was no overall commander. Browning and Horrocks had no one to coordinate their maneuvers efforts. When Monty failed to capture Arnhem, he used the US 101AB as static troops to hold the Lower Rhein which was a complete waste of manpower and depleted their health by forcing them to sit in cold waterlogged trenches for over a month. Donald Burgett's book on Market Garden details this.
Many of the "German" forces were infact Dutch.
@@fazole In Monty's memoirs he laments the fact that Allied Transport Command refused to drop Ist Airborne on the bridge, giving them far too much to do in fighting their way to the bridge, and he regretted not ORDERING Transport Command to drop them over the bridge, but he believed that the Transport and Airborne units knew their job. This I think, explain a much of what went wrong with Market Garden, but I still believe that it was not possible to drive a whole Corps up a single road without the Germans continually attacking the flanks, and so the whole operation depended on a lack of German resistance.
Thanx man! Keep up the good work!
Thanks man! Appreciate it
Excellent video. Really very well done. Thank you and you have a new subscriber.
Thank you very much! i wont disappoint you in the future!
Great video, well done! I didn't know about Overloon until a couple guys on a PC WW@ sim game I play, Post Scriptum, made a map of it!

Thanks for this, we used to visit overloon when I was stationed in laarbruch in mid 90s has changed so much. Have pictures of my son sat on the panther in the woods. Hopefully will be visiting later this year.
Thank you for watching! It is great to show people the museum on how it looks today. Especially to people who have been there once allready.
Yea I was stationed at Gutersloh visited Overloon 89 remember a massive Gernan military cemetery near by quite an awesome sight of all those fallen .
Great video and many thanks young man.
Thank you Mark!
Excellent video. The next time I visit the Netherlands I will go to the Overloon museum. I have visited Arnhem and walked across the bridge, also the Hotel Hartenstein and the museum there. There is so much history that it could take years to see it all.
Thank you! I would highly recommend to do it. I am working on a BIG documentary on Market Garden itself. Allready have 37.000+ plus words. So that shows how much happend just in only that operation. Imagine the rest
This is on my to do list for sure, great video, thank you.
Nice! You wont regret it. Thanks!
The Churchill tank Jackal, was from No2 Squadron HQ 4th Battalion Coldstream Guards 6th Guards Tank Brigade, my Father was in No 1 Squadron No 2 Troop and fought in the Battle of Overloon.

Thank you Phil!
Panther tank, beautiful machine and my favourite. Really good video young man. Stugs are great too.
Thank you! It is also definitly my favorite tank!
I visited the museum in 1979, it stated then the Panther was disabled by a PIAT hit to a track and the crew were shot dead when they abandoned the tank, is this true??.
Thank you for this video very interesting , the museum looks amazing . thank you .
Thank you! i did my best! And the museum is definitely worth a visit!

Another great history telling. I'll keep Waiting for more👌.

Wow, fantastic to see how this museum has developed. I visited a few times between 1980 & 1982 when serving in Germany with HM Forces. Will certainly try to visit again someday.
It is definitely worth to visit it again! It is a completely different museum compared to the 80/90's. Thank you!
My Father took part in so many battles in Belgium and Holland during 1944 , I'm amazed he survived the more I dig into the details of what happened. Fights to flush out SS snipers in Brussels at the end of September with the White Brigade in 1944 and his love for the Dutch and Belgian people who were so kind to him and his unit particularly in Den Bosch and Apeldoorn .
Thats so awesome to hear! I bet you know alot of story's that your dad told you. I would love to hear some!
Very interesting video of an unknown battle and ww2 museum to me. Salute!

It will probably excist for another 100 years!
As a young cadet in 1976, I visited Overloon. They were digging an aircraft out of a bank in the woods. I think it was a single engine plane with a massive radial engine. I wo der what it was and what it's story was.
That is an amazing museum for sure.
Its imo, the best we have here in the Netherlands.

The Germans were a really well equipped and well trained and disciplined Military. So any victory against them was incredible.
Thats true! The Allies did underestemate them later in the war.
I should put the museum into my to visit once in a lifetime list.
It is definitley worth a visit! Its a great museum.
I have been there many times. The collection off the overloon museum is incrediable as are the the yearly events. And in years to come i would still visit And on a side note the tank outside is an IS2 soviet heavy tank
Thats awesome, and i think you will probably keep visiting the museum! And thanks! i didnt knew that.
Listening to these stories brings back memories of my time in the military. Not fun but I still like history.
I can imagine indeed. Its the hard reality.
I was aware of the Battle of Overloon but not of the museum. Thankyou for showing it to us, I must visit it if I should ever cross the channel again.

Yes! Definitely worth a visit! And sadly, ive never been to Bovington. I am planning to go with some friend next year, just hope Covid wont get in the way!
At 1:52 the narrator says "Venlo had two bridges" which is not entirely true. There was a road bridge right next to a railway bridge. They were not hundreds of meters apart from each other like the graphics suggested..
