There are some heavier duty metal light stands that can handle this light well or you can always use a c-stand. As for replacing the plastic joint, I found a mini ball head that fits a 1/4 20 on either end. It seems to be holding up nicely. I also had luck using a speed plate for a tripod.
Tri-8s are awesome! I got the three-light kit (two spots and one bi-color). Key, fill, and hair light.
They are super versatile, need to add a few more to the kit. Right now my go to is the 120d with a light dome in combination with the Tri-8
