    This video came at the *perfect* time. I was literally thinking about the difference between these two just today and wanted to get a spotlight mount to use with either of them. Thanks for the video Tyler!

    An obscure but very important point is that the Aputure version is actually 25 % brighter and more comparable to an Amaran 100d. This is true with the 60x versions, and I assume this applies to the 60d's as well.
    In some situations this light might struggle as a key light, so every bit of extra brightness is important.

    You missed out a key piece of information. How much noise does each type of light produce? For me that's crucial as I'm also trying to do top notch audio recording at the same time as video recording.

    • @TylerEdwards

      I didn’t mention it because neither of these lights produce any more noise than any other COB light.

    What light modifiers from Aputure would be okay for the Light Storm? The ones I choose were too heavy. Thanks for the comparison video

    • @TylerEdwards
      @TylerEdwards  Рік тому +1

      Technically with the Bowens adapter, all softbox modifiers should work, but I wouldn’t use the light dome II or the bigger one personally. None of the hard light modifiers like the fresnel or spotlight will work though since there’s already a glass focusing element built in.

    Minus for the 60D is lack of battery power option. LS60D comes with an NPF-plate, V-mounted on the yoke.

    • @TylerEdwards
      @TylerEdwards  2 роки тому +1

      Definitely! But the Amaran does have a vmount on the fixture and comes with an NPF plate adapter. What’s missing is the dtap adapter

    Thanks for the video. I am curious have you footage where you light 2 persons directly to see how bright this 60d and how far away the light was. Like: 2 persons, 7 meters away, 100% light , your cameras iso maybe 400. Its difficult with lights to see if they are bright enough. Thanks man

    • @TylerEdwards
      @TylerEdwards  2 роки тому +1

      The 60d probably wouldn't be the best light for a two talent interview. You'd want a more powerful light to throw through a big diffusion like a 6x6' to get good coverage of the two people.

    Amaran is truly portable solution, you can hold it in your hand, you can carry it in a bag, while walking in the woods, filming some autumn scenes, you can attach it to the cheap stand you bought 12 years ago for your first Yongnuo 460 flash and $8 umbrella.
    LS 60d/x at the time of its release was positioned like portable light too, but this is far from the truth. With the power supply it is a very heavy unit. And it has some disadvantages: You can use amaran as a soft source, but LS 60 is not able to fill a regular 90cm softbox. The tilt mechanism with teeth is very "stepped", it constantly irritates me. The lens is very effective, but you can use a fresnel attachment on a regular source and get a good result. Also Bi-color X version of the LS takes a huge penalty for the output, but this is not the case for Amaran lights - D and X versions of Amaran almost equal in output. And it is worth to mention that at the time of release, a spotlight mini zoom was advertised along with LS 60d/x, but this is a bulky, heavy and not very effective combination. I think that Amaran spotlight made it obsolete.
    Overall, it seemed like they wanted to develop some system of these fixtures and accessories for them, as an alternative to Dedolights, but then they changed their minds and abandoned this system, along with other relatively consumer grade and inexpensive products from Aputure brand.
    Given all that, and the fact that they released a new, "S" version of the amaran, i would advise not to bother with the LS 60d/x if you just a mere mortal creator, and not some gaffer guy.
    It's a good product, but amaran is much more versatile.

    Hey Tyler! I'm building together my first lighting kit to learn my way around lighting for short films. I have around $1500 to spend on lights, modifiers and stands. I'm thinking of starting out with three lights and was looking at the Amaran 200X, Amaran 200D and the Amaran 60X. Do you think these are a solid three lights to start off with given my budget or would you recommend a different setup? I don't know whether to go all bicolor for practicality or throw a daylight in there for power...i know its subjective but I thought having the 200X and 200D would be a best of both worlds scenario?

    • @TylerEdwards
      @TylerEdwards  2 роки тому +1

      Definitely keep daylight in there for output! That looks to be a good kit and in the future you could add a p60c for rgb and g/m tunability

  • @kipling1957
    @kipling1957 2 роки тому +3

    I heard the lens on the Aputure is obviously great for spotlight but less so on soft modifiers where the Ameran is a better choice having wider light dispersion.

  • @kipling1957
    @kipling1957 2 роки тому

    Everyone seems to angst when describing the lens on the Aputure 60D/X. No need to mention fresnel at all, which is just a different type of lens technology used to focus a beam of light. It just happens to be adopted in large spotlights due to inherent lower cost and weight.

  • @PlayGameToday
    @PlayGameToday Рік тому

    You can't use the Aputure LS 60D with softboxes larger than 65 cm, because it emits a narrow beam of light and produces a spot of light.

    Now, i was not sure if the Amaran 60d/x is the right light for me and i was troubeling to go for the Sokani 100x or the Amaran 60. The advantage of the Amaran is definitly the compactness and the features it brings. For sure a very good light. But now i want the LS60d which is much bigger and heavier than the other lights xD... wtf!?! The build Quality, the better Bowens mount and the Fresnel , likewise the NPF Battery thing make me want this thing a lot :P

    • @TylerEdwards
      @TylerEdwards  2 роки тому +1

      @@SustainableGal ya, the amaran 60D wouldn't replace my other lights for a key light. However, if you needed to mount a light dome to it, you could use a cardellini clamp to hold the light dome and just mount the light off that and let the light dome hold the weight of the 60d since it is so lightweight. that said, i mounted the light dome to the 60d in my home studio with no issue.
