If it makes you feel any better, this is about the level of frustration I felt playing the original Deku Tree for the first time on N64 OOT back when I was a child.
Yooooo! You actually played this, that's so cool. I remember archiving this game before on UA-cam, really was cool, sucks that its development life got cut short tho 😢 But at least other people can see this old project that totally could've been expanded into a full game.

Its kinda sad to think that Link felt abandoned after Navi left at the end because he thought they were friends. However looking at it from the info and text in the game. Great Deku Tree gave the task of guiding Link to quell the evil that was coming. So Navi never considered Link a friend, just a job assigned to her and then left when it was done like any professional would...tho we as the player only see her as an annoying fairy who always screams "Hey! Listen!", if u think about it her vast knowledge of the world and enemies would be invaluable to a kid who has only known peace in a small forest.
Link was dumb and left his actual friends (Zelda, Malon etc) back in Hyrule. Zelda especially, as we see in Majora's Mask she really desired him to come home.

The aiming mechanic is mechanically not weird since Nintendo use this mechanic themselves in yoshis island for super nintendo when aiming to shoot yoshi eggs 🥚
The slingshot aiming crosshairs, the style, and the sound in the side scroller mode are a cameo reference to Yoshi's Island BTW, Yoshi fires eggs in the same way.
Id love to play a full game version of this. It would be cool if all the 3d zelda games could be played like this. And vice versa the 2d games in 3d lol.

Oh boy. After finishing it through some of the dialogue and the one hyrule field cut scene were kind of off... however the 2d aspect was great regardless 😅
It’s amazing. However, i don’t see how they would have figured out the water temple. Swimming up down, raising water levels, etc. wouldn’t really work in 2d.

you know with a little bit of refinement in the deku tree like maybe shrinking the map and skewing and a justing the angles a bit and little bit more work in the over all design this could be really good. also utilizing the 2d side skroller for parts that don't translate well. etc
