To even hear you talk about this game and to think about puts tears in my eyes, that's how much I love this game and nothing has ever came close to the magic that was OOT, experienced as a kid.
Yes, OoT DID invent the "chaining" targeting the way we see it in many games to this day (like Souls). What you see in Tomb Raider is basically aim assist. Mega Man Legends doesn't even let you move, and even to roll you have to release the button. There are other games that come close, but they are never quite it
Ive never believed it. Ppl just regurgitate what they've heard. I'm sure there was a lock on targeting "system", or action, prob on PS1 before oot. It def wasn't the first 3d game and there where plenty for a few years before that game came out. Im gunna go do some digging. If I find sumthing I'll update this comment
@@NintenDub Alita and Virtual On are the closest you will find. Alita doesn't have a dedicated targeting button, the camera is static and the game automatically picks the target in your line of sight. In Virtual On, it's really just the dash attack (a rather cinematic on-rails action) where the game automatically locks on for you, and you can't walk around freely while "chaining", use different weapons and switch between multiple targets like in Zelda So yes, OoT was the first to do manual targeting the way you see it in games like Dark Souls today. Don't let anti-Nintendo fanboys tell you otherwise
@@ryukishi8492 in Megaman legends 2 targeting is really similar. But then, it was just refined from the first game, after seen how a 3d Zelda handled it.
@@NintenDubHi, old ass gamer here. I don't need to repeat what anyone else has told me cuz I was there. You're wrong! OoT was the first. It was a big deal, something magazines were oohing and aahing about months before release. I remember being baffled by all the praise at the time because it seemed like such an obvious way to handle targeting to me, but with adult hindsight and context it's easier to see how revolutionary it was.
@@Goosewitdajuice317They were the first. Not the first 3D lock on targeting system. Metroid Prime was in extreme trouble at the time when Miyamoto showed up to address the development team. His design suggestions were really thinly veiled ultimatums for Retro Studios to deliver on or all funding would have been pulled at that point.
Can you imagine the experience of going from first person to then suddenly switch to third person, side-on view for all the encounters? Who would even think of something that needlessly clunky? Miyamoto has some good ideas, but BOY has he got some STINKERS
@@Lewi_Richit sounds a bit like Final Fantasy 7, if that had used first person for the maps. So it wouldn't really be clunky, but it also wouldn't fit very well with the action adventure style.
We had Club Nintendo in The Netherlands back then and they showed off screenshots of the alpha build. I waited 3 years for what would become not only my favorite Zelda game, but still my favorite game to this day! Hearing about the development process made me want to and eventually become a game developer. Watching this video inspires me again to make games like this eventually!
And then we have the oh so competently made combat system from BotW and TotK where every enemy from every angle will just gang up on you at once with both melee and ranged attacks, usually taking an enormous chunk of your health away with every hit. I swear, the normal Zelda games always had fun and fair combat where in the new ones have stopped the ball so hard that I will often just try my hardest to avoid it altogether when possible. Such a shame -_-
in 9th grade my buddy SWORE that a friend of his knew a guy who SWORE he found a way to get and equip the triforce and we spent a ton of time trying to figure out how, also i discovered a whole new level of hate for water levels thanks to this game
I was the kid who had a GameShark and knew a little about binary and how computers work in theory, but not much about how games were actually made. There was that "beta quest" code that scrambled the cutscenes and entrances and made the game really bizarre and dreamlike. I got so much extra enjoyment out of screwing around with that after having finished the game. It was like discovering all these bizarre, unfinished, broken leftovers. At that time, I didn't really understand that most of what I was seeing was just glitched, rather than actual unused/hidden content. Though, there was a bit of that too.
Wow, it's so good to have found this channel... I'll be taking a look at your A Link To the Past video later. I've always loved learning about N64 games and their developments. When I was a young teen I used to think this was not only the greatest game ever made but the greatest adventure of my life thus far. It got me interested in the fantasy genre, medieval history, stories from epic history, tabletop gaming and JRPGs. Suffice it to say, it was the best Christmas gift of my life and the only other game that came close to having a similar impact was Final Fantasy X.
Christmas 1998 I didn’t even know just how good it was going to Be. My cousin already had it and we half way through. All I had were his words to build the hype in my mind. It blew me away. The music in this game was beyond immaculate. The second I hear 3 notes of any of the songs from the game, I know what I'm listening to. That's the mark of great song-writing. Even to this day, I regularly listen to the OST.
That intro is legendary. Always reminds me of getting home from school, my feet freezing during the winter from snow in my boots, and running upstairs to let my feet warm up while the intro played while it was getting dark out. And I was already in high school! :P
I was never a target audience for this, but a friend in my dorm got me into Ocarina - I fell in love with the beauty and the fairies. Ocarina of Time will always be my favorite game of all time. The nostalgia it holds is insane. The music especially, IMO there is only one game that musically tops OOT and that is Chrono Trigger
I knew about the first person thing, but I didn't know it would pull out for combat. That's...very Metroid Prime-like. I wonder if he held onto that and suggested it to Retro.
i'm 43 years old and the legend of zelda was the first game i played back when it was brand new, and i was exactly today years old when i learned the ocarina of time music was the flute from LoZ.
One thing I liked was being able to do things out of sequence. Getting the megaton hammer before the fairy bow. Also, beating the spirit temple before the shadow temple. It only took minor creativity to bypass even needing the hover boots.

Great episode! I really enjoyed hearing how the team developed it and the chaos of putting it together and the part about Toho studios and the fight giving them ideas!!
17:30 😅 I love that Koizumi’s wife spurred the first “handsome Nintendo character”
Freakin legend
Handsome Link is my favorite Link (and this is coming from a straight guy)
To even hear you talk about this game and to think about puts tears in my eyes, that's how much I love this game and nothing has ever came close to the magic that was OOT, experienced as a kid.
This was an amazingly well done video, reminded me of the Gaming Historian in quality. Keep up the great work!
We've found a hidden gem of a channel folks
Exactly what I thought, Master Yoda.
All hail the algorithm for bringing us here
Every time I learn more about OOT’s history, I believe more it’s a miracle it’s this good.
And I also understand why can be so glitchy in speedruns.
NES in Hebrew means Miracle.
In Virtual On, it's really just the dash attack (a rather cinematic on-rails action) where the game automatically locks on for you, and you can't walk around freely while "chaining", use different weapons and switch between multiple targets like in Zelda
So yes, OoT was the first to do manual targeting the way you see it in games like Dark Souls today.
But the first targeting system that allowed full movement and dodging and the seamless switching of targets, paving the way for Soulslikes especially. Believe it or not, Nintendo is actually a company who is sort of famous for their revolutionary gameplay systems, as well as hardware innovations. They invented z-targeting.
How the actuall hell do you not have more subscribers? Instant sub, like, and comment as soon as I saw your editing and the theme of these videos. I am praying that the algorithm is kind to you and grab others as it did me!
Quality and success don't have much of a relationship.
I have been a fan of Zelda since i was a kid with the first one on the NES, and as i grew up i played every entry up until now, but i will have a special place in my heart for the time when OOT was released, it can't be described how impacted the industry, it became an instant classic and a masterpiece.
I only ever owned two games on my N64...Mario and Zelda. Pretty disappointing that there was never a Metroid game on that system.
Ocarina of Time and Majoras Mask was damn perfect, the atmosphere was so serious, dark and mysterious, and the graphics was perfect for the setting. All Zelda games after that have just looked and feeled bad compare to this two games.
Damn how much i miss thise two game and how they was.
So so SO glad this was on my recommended. This is fantastic so far!!!!
Zelda Ocarina of Time has been my favorite game since I was a kid this whole time, and I NEVER knew... that Navi's name came from the fact she "Navigated" Link .... Wow... I love it :)
It’s interesting how Miyamoto suggested Zelda go to first person. A few years later he would suggest it again for Metroid, and that time it stuck.
I feel like Metroid probably works better because of the shooting mechanics. He probably realized that
Metroid Prime was in extreme trouble at the time when Miyamoto showed up to address the development team.
I.... Never caught on to the ocarina of time title music sampling the flute from the original game....
That's so awesome
And then we have the oh so competently made combat system from BotW and TotK where every enemy from every angle will just gang up on you at once with both melee and ranged attacks, usually taking an enormous chunk of your health away with every hit.
I swear, the normal Zelda games always had fun and fair combat where in the new ones have stopped the ball so hard that I will often just try my hardest to avoid it altogether when possible.
Such a shame -_-
Fascinating. I never noticed enemies backing off while Z-targeting, but yes, they do. 🤔
in 9th grade my buddy SWORE that a friend of his knew a guy who SWORE he found a way to get and equip the triforce and we spent a ton of time trying to figure out how, also i discovered a whole new level of hate for water levels thanks to this game
There's just something so mysterious about them, especially this and Super Mario 64.
It's kind of like the opposite to the development cycles on the SNES, when Nintendo had perfected the 2D formula.
Hands down, the best Zelda game ever made.
When I was a young teen I used to think this was not only the greatest game ever made but the greatest adventure of my life thus far. It got me interested in the fantasy genre, medieval history, stories from epic history, tabletop gaming and JRPGs. Suffice it to say, it was the best Christmas gift of my life and the only other game that came close to having a similar impact was Final Fantasy X.
lol my fav games of all time are also ffx and oot
25:06 Gotta love the way Darunia hits on Link the moment he sees him.
When that beat drops at 12:15 though. The soundtrack was so good.
Christmas 1998
I didn’t even know just how good it was going to
Be.
My cousin already had it and we half way through. All I had were his words to build the hype in my mind. It blew me away. I had never played anything like it.
Thanks mum and dad for making a wonderful Christmas
Memory for me playing it anywhere that i could get time on the tv 💙
Very great video. Thanks
I think this would have way more likes if the sound editing was better. There were times that the sound just exploded, but when your voice returned it was so low that I barely heard you... But nonetheless, you really are a gem channel! Your content is amazing and managed to grab my attention from start to finish even with that problem with the audio. Thank you for the video!
Fairly certain that whistle melody you mention early is also the WHISTLE theme from Super mario bros 3 when you warp.
Yes, it is. The developers included it in Super Mario 3 and had it carry Mario away in a whirlwind as a reference to the original Legend of Zelda.
Welp, here’s an entire channel to binge. Looking forward to this journey❤
Oh yes, so happy this just dropped!
I still have the old Nintendo Power issues that show early screenshots of the game with Link in a very basic 3D town, and many other scenes that never appeared in the final version. It's so cool to learn about the development process.
This gives me Gaming Historian vibes. Keep up the good work!
I'm watching this after playing ToTK, I played OoT when I was young on the N64, but the one comment about the sages imprisoning war had me GO CRAZY! Because the ToTK timeline in the past is about the imprisoning war, so now you have my head going in Circles! Because they themselves have now put a piece of the timeline, that people had a hard time understanding or figuring out when it happened, on the timeline! This is amazing!!
this game was like walking through the door to Narnia for childhood me. I went from side scrolling sonic to exploring this magical and mysterious world knowing absolutely nothing about it before I turned it on
My first time playing OOT was on the 3DS. Once I became adult Link, I did the dungeons completely out of order, completing the Water Temple first (at least from what I remember) by getting some items from the other dungeons
The water temple in the original game was excruciatingly painful because of the constant switching to menu screen to swap boots.
@macethorns1168 ah i see. it's my favorite but i can see why playing the 3ds version had a different effect on how i felt about it
@@LinkyTea3DS improved on that by letting you equip boots to buttons, but it also changed some things to make the water temple easier to navigate.
Hey! Listen! Just a fellow OoT and Zelda series lover who happened to be recommended this video, and since this is my favorite game of all time I tend to search for people making fun or interesting content about it, or to hear even more about it and am very happy to run into this one. Just wanted to say it was super well done, clear and concise with the simple edits of gameplay footage & easy to read quotes. Very much now am a fan of yours, earned a sub and absolutely will be going back to binge further. Hope to see lots more content like this for OoT and a ton of the Zelda games, your voice is very relaxing and it's clear you did your homework instead of half-assing it.
Appreciate the time you put in for the Zelda die hards like me who can never get enough info about OoT or the series as a whole, keep it up!
The algorithm brought me here and I love it. Liked and subscribed
OoT is my favourite game of all time. I still remember when I got the game, I was probably 7 or 8 years old. Around young Link's age, which made me identify more with the character. The music, Hyrule Field, everything about OoT just brings me a smile. Thank you for this video. It's a gem. Liked and subscribed!
What a relaxing video style. The algo recommended this to me and I'm happy to sub and look forward to your playthrough!
21:17 Interestingly, Banjo-Kazooie has more dynamic music than Ocarina of Time, and it came out 4 months before Ocarina of Time. It's honestly very impressive everything Rare did with that game.
Awesome find. Thank you, Algorithm! lol look forward to more Zelda talk!
Just hearing the opening music brings tears to my eyes. I love this game so much.
Loved this video, great voice tons of info and tidbits. New sub and will follow along.
this video alone made me subscribe and i will also share this video with a friend. thank you for the awesome video.
A playthough of my favorite game of all time. Looks like I'm subscribing.
Timeless classic *pun Intended* people still playing in going into 2024! broken or fixed! this game will never die! and will always be one of my favorites games! awesome knowledge in this vid man!
This is such a professional and well made video game documentary. Well done.
Great podcast. Looking forward to the next episode.
Amazing game, I still have to stay. Even my kids play with me and loved it.
I was never a target audience for this, but a friend in my dorm got me into Ocarina - I fell in love with the beauty and the fairies. Now my own teen can kick my rear at any video game but we all adore Zelda.
Oot was also the first time I wad introduced to the idea of a guide - I owned 2 to get me through.
Im playing this game with my 4yo son and him getting invested in the story is very gratifying.
I was 7 years old when I played OOT for the first time. I played it over and over again so many times over the years… It’s probably the most visceral nostalgic memory I have from childhood. ❤ The world, characters, story, and absolutely genius music are all perfect
This channel is a freaking gold mine. I love it.
Great video man, keep it up!
But 21:32 "Sa-ra-e-ah"?!
What a history lesson! It feels so good to hear about the indephts of one of my favourite titles ever. Thank you very very much!
Thanks for the video with all this info in a good format.
The third open world game has to be like "Melody of Memories" or something with free musical composition creating the various world manipulating effects?
This was a loving lesson to myself and children on how to live and overcome corruption, like the Bible, and I have become Link
Intro gave me goosebumps
I typically prefer objectivity in documentaries such as these since the nostalgia is already in place
I was four years old in 2000, glad I got to play this game growing up still my favourite since that age. Parents never knew how’d I beat it at my age without reading.
OOT Title screen music is a testament to the power of music in games and shows/movies
I can't help but think of the whistle item in Super Mario Bros. 3, followed by the cloud theme (if that's what it's called)
Warp zone theme*
What a nice way to remind people the two games were created by the same people.
thank you, and I agree!
Yep, the whistle in SMB3 and Zelda 1 both used that tune!
omg.. how is it that in the 25 years since this game came out, and despite it being one of my favorite games of all time, I have literally never noticed that the title screen music is based on the warp whistle tune!? I don't know whether to feel stupid, or amazed, or both.
It's also the warp whistle in Super Mario Bros 3.
It's just unfortunate that playing it in the game doesn't do anything.
Great video man hope you do Majoras Mask, Wind Waker and twilight princess
That is the plan!
@@legendaryadventurespod awesome :)
@@mendaix I think so Wind Waker’s history is so interesting!
You people have to learn about keeping the volume at a fixed level
Subbed, here before 2.5k subscribers. Leaving this as proof that I liked him before he got super popular
A Link To The Past is where it all started for me. A masterpiece.
What a great watch. Freshly subscribed and I look forward to get watching the other videos.
i'm 43 years old and the legend of zelda was the first game i played back when it was brand new, and i was exactly today years old when i learned the ocarina of time music was the flute from LoZ.
One thing I liked was being able to do things out of sequence. Getting the megaton hammer before the fairy bow. Also, beating the spirit temple before the shadow temple. It only took minor creativity to bypass even needing the hover boots.
one day after the 25th anniversary of zelda OoT, what a treat
The greatest RPG game ever made in the history of gaming...history of time if you will. You actually become link and feel the awesome of his transition. Back then... this was the most wonderful feeling any video game had ever made me.feel. it was truly wonderful and compelling. They did a great job. And that'd an understatement
Thank God they did it, and the way they did. Life changing, still so inspirational and Ive only recently started to understand the symbolism and lessons. Such wonderful, kind, whole, strong creators put their best selves into this game for humanity and children... This game is the real reason to help other people. You have to remember that there are people like this out there, or were, or thats what all or most humans are capable of.
