My dad got that back in the day (I don't know how). It was played once. Since then, I have NO IDEA whatever-da-heck happened to it. So, this is my second time hearing that flexidisc.
Fantastic! Chet and Les are incredible guitarists. Not only that, but their contributions to the recording industry are legendary! I don't know about best sounding flexi, but the coolest one that I had as a kid was the 1979 Mad magazine mystery record: Super Spectacular Day in which depending upon where the needle dropped, would play one of eight different endings.

Very good sound for a flexidisc. I love Chet Atkins and have a lot of his stuff. You're right, he's often left off modern lists of the greatest guitarists "ever," but they also leave off Django Reinhardt and lots of other people who belong. The same is true of lists of movies, bands, songs and albums. Most such lists are written by young squirts who don't know anything that happened before 2000. There's a video on UA-cam listing the 10 Greatest Broadway Musicals of "all time." It has all the recent popular shows like "Les Miz" and "Hamilton" (even "Cats"!), but no Rodgers & Hammerstein, Cole Porter, Frank Loesser, Jule Styne, Irving Berlin, Meredith Wilson...nothing from the canon of classic musicals that have been constantly on the boards for well over half a century.
A case where using a record weight or clamp makes sense.
Wow what a fun little record. That is probably by far the best sounding flexi disc I have heard. The fidelity is good and it sounds great through headphones. Chet Atkins was a great guitarist but another one that you don't hear getting a mention very much these days is Bert Weedon. He was an awesome guitarist back in the day and had a couple of hits in the late 50's and early 60's. He was the first British guitarist to have a hit in the UK singles chart with a record called 'Guitar Boogie Shuffle'. Great record, it reached number 10 in the UK charts.

I was able to thrift some Chet stuff when I first got into vinyl and was buying everything that was cheap and even vaguely recognizable. Those are now some of my favorite albums.
3:57 That Chet Atkins recording is from 1923? It sounds so clean and so modern as if it had been recorded in the 50's or 60's. That really is amazing and on a flexidisc no less. :)

This was fun I to also forgot how great Chet Atkins was I remember hearing some of his songs when I was younger but I never thought of getting any of his albums what was I thinking , got to try to get one glad I put you on today thanks for your videos you remind me of certain artists that I forgot about and I remember seeing a flex disc in one of my stereo mags I used to subscribe to when in my teen years I never thought it would work well on a record player it looked too light to play I never thought of using some kind of weight to stabilize disc ,WOW I learned new things today again thanks!!!! @@Recordology unfortunately we couldn't go where the manufacturing was done but they showed a movie of the records being pressed . it was very much like they did normal vinyl records except far less heat was used

hood. Agreed with you all the way. In my opinion, the reason Chet Atkins isn't mentioned in the list of greatest players is because he is regarded as a Country musician where the others are rock and roll.

I tried to get Siri to do a content I’d match for this song and Siri told me the song is called wisdom by Leventina. So I looked it up and they really don’t sound that close but there is one part I can see why Siri matched it that way LOL however if you like house music Leventina is pretty cool sounding, that’s just one of the ways I discover music

Dude! The ATLP3 manual says NO weights or clamps. I only know this because my vinyl platter mat was starting up just before the record, so I was going to weigh it down. I decided to use my chrome, dome-shaped 45 adaptor, and there was no slippage :) That's a great sounding flexi!
P.S.- can recommend Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan in session. A blues masterclass. You can see from his demenour how pleased SRV was to be taking part.
This flesh disk was probably made from the original mater tapes of this song. It sounds much like the album track. I joined several record rating clubs and the sample singles and albums many times came on these thin sheets and would be two sided versions of an album prior to release. They were not intended to be played more than once or twice and then destroyed. They could last a while if well cared for. Some were really good quality recordings though the thin sheet vinyl would add some noise during play back. BTW I have the album that song is from and am a big fan after seeing him play it on national television.

Not a country fan by any means, but I got caught up in the music and didn't really hear the problems with the flexidisk. Just sorta ignored them and listened to Chet pickin' away.
I think thats an issue with many discovering Chet - they think hes only country. He had amazing Jazz, Classical, pop, etc albums as well.

Just curious: why didn’t you use this LP 7? Since it’s manual, there would be no problem with the tone arm returning to the rest before the record’s over.
I don't think its a good idea to use an elliptical on a shallow groove soundsheet. I think the conical is better for it and less compliant so its more resistive to creases etc.
Maybe with a direct feed.

@@Recordology No! It's Dizzy Fingers, composed by Zez Confrey, as performed by Chet Atkins. Confrey was a pianist and composer who made a few recordings in the early 20's. Of his compositions, Dizzy Fingers and Kitten on the Keys were probably the best known, and sheet music for them still shows up in junk shops and antique stores. Atkins' version is quite close to the piano score. Never ever forget the composer when you talk about a "song".
