So the story if I'm assuming correctly is of a changeling. Back in the olden days when babies were born with disabilities or deformities , people didn't understand what was the cause. They're belief was that the fairies or the sidhe/sídh had taken the baby and left behind an imposter in its place, often an enchanted rock or piece of wood. It was essentially their way of explaining why the baby wasn't normal. I'm also fairly certain it's where the phrase "They're away with the fairy's" comes from , meaning the person be they a child or an adult, who was suffering with a mental issue was just a replacement put there by the fairy's who had kidnapped the real human!
