Hi Rick.Enjoyed your running session as always.Don’t know what JMRI is? Would be great to see you do a 1hour video.keep up the great content.Cheers.. John from the Uk.
Yup.... it's cold in my section of Ohio as well.....Good job on the video, thanks for giving it to us to enjoy..... Running trains is what it is about.....
I use JMRI exclusively on my n scale 3 x 6 switching layout. Yes, there are times of frustration with JMRI but overall I love it. As they say, to each his own.
Great add on with the two different eras. Southern Pacific 1980s Rules! Lots of 1st generation power still running. My vast collection and layout is based on the transition era but I do have quite a bit 1980s SP and Santa Fe. I hope to build a switching layout one day for that stuff. Love the videos keep them coming.
I don't use JMRI for operations, as it's not the style of operations I want to do, so I'm writing my own software (and am finally at a point where I can test it with my layout) since I'm a software developer by day. Always enjoy your videos, your layout has inspired some of my decision making for my next one.
I knew someone I was watching also had a Maersk shipping container on the layout but couldn’t remember who. That’s why I bought one on the last swapmeet as well. Now I know wgere I got the idea from! Good to see these were also common in the USA.
Hey thanks for turning me on to Burr, don't know how I missed him all this time. Am I seeing things, or are there some more little details on the layout? Signs and gates... Or have they been there all this time🤔
With lock for turnouts, you could use barrel switches with a key. Sort of like vending machines keys, but for electronic uses. Turn a key set the turnout for the direction you need it for. Always a great video Mr. Rick
Dang im getting so jealous right now...gotta get some U5Bs for switching....i cant wait to build a layout ...been adding to my home depot card every payday ....
Rick all you need is a small hasp to cover the pull knob. You already have the lock.. undo the lock, the hasp drops down in its hinge exposing the knob..
I use JMRI, but only for programming decoders. I can't imagine using it for more complex things than that, given how hard it can be to work with sometimes.
Rick- I recently put out a video on super simplified JMRI operations. Not using staging or yards or anything complex. Check it out if you're so inclined, I think it would fix your JMRI experience.
You know, Rick, I'm sure JMRI or JRMI, or whatever it is, is a wonderful thing. But, to be truthful, I liked your layout a lot better when it was simpler, and you had time to develop the characters of guys like Karl, the taco shop guy, the weirdo's in the cut, Torres and his fascination with the bathing beauties at the taco stand, Engineer Rick, that dog perpetually pissing the truck wheel (like an Italian fountain) at the Equine Arena, and the switching puzzles to deal with - not to mention Benji, the deaf dog from riding atop the short hood of a locomotive just below the horns. And the never forgettable Lamont. Oh, and "Lance Riprod" the human phallic symbol. And also the "new guy" RR employee. And Mrs. Torres. Even the cats at the dumpster - it was like "Engineer Rick's Neighborhood" with realistic operations. If you want to do this JRIM,, please proceed. But, don't lose what made your layout really special - a RR layout with a storyline. What you started creating is one-of-a-kind. Throw the dice, buddy; throw the dice.
don't worry. as I type Mr Torres is running around dropping cars off in Cerritos. I'm running the first dropoffs so we have some cars to switch in the next video
There is an option in the Engine Driver app to bring up the JMRI switch list directly without having to do any exporting or converting. When you use that method, there are check boxes on the switch list that will automatically tell JMRI to go to the next step. There is a video about it, I will try to find it.
@@pvarlien even better! I'm not very tech savvy but was able to follow the instructions in that video to make it work. Now I need to experiment with just the browser. Thank you!
Thank you very much for all your videos ;) you have been at the origin of my decision to build a US freight operation layout two years ago. And like you I decided to go for JMRI and its “logic”. After a first step where I was switching cars from my yard to my 7 industries, I decided to move to the next step: managing loaded and empty cars. I created 2 virtual sets of offsite industries (West and East) providing raw material and buying finished goods to my industries. It gives JMRI the opportunity to create bigger interstate trains on top of local trains, gives more sense to our yard and the opportunity to use your staging. It really worth the amount of hours, with associated additional white hair, spent on JMRI :) Interesting next step could be time and schedule … but it is another story Hope to see your JMRI journey in your video soon Cheers from a French newbie fan.
☠not a fan of JMRI as it causes the operator to cherry pick rather than sort cars. I know why your using it is you want your job generated by someone/thing other than you. That said, the RR way to sort is you pull the -whole- string and sort. Like for you as you have 3 Jobs, sort to the A_D track, Job 1 (the one you are going to do,) Then sort Job 2 to track 2 and Job 3 to track 3. Viola, your next to jobs are ready for your next session. Just Pile up the outbounds on the sluff track or the A_D on return. Cheers Rick, was nice to have several vids this week. PPS, all cars removed, good time to clean ALL the tracks!
I like and use your dice way. I lived in HB during the the 70's & 80"s must be SW1500 or MP15's. Have a great weekend.

Right? I'm jealous- it's been in the 10s-20s here in SE Wisconsin!

You get a car...and you get a car...and you get a car...😂
Thank you for another visit to your train room. I think that your new loco is a SP Kodachrome GP-9R.
Dang im getting so jealous right now...gotta get some U5Bs for switching....i cant wait to build a layout ...been adding to my home depot card every payday ....
You might consider lockable barrel latches to control the access maybe you could even have the latch control the switch.
Just a suggestion for the turnouts. Install the push/ pull rod to the turnouts. Then, configure a hasp system over the rod and install your pad 🔐

Hey Rick, another great video! Doesn’t Carl ever get cold? Cold temps out there and he’s meandering around in swim trunks 🩳

I use it, in my view it's better than anything else.
Have you ever thought of getting rid of directional lighting on your locomotives? Just makes it look way more realistic
I figure the new engine is EMD and a SW-7 though I feel you need a Alco as a RS-2..Railroad;Great Northern..

Here it is, JMRI operations with no paper:

You don't need Engine Driver. Any browser will do, as long as you have the JMRI Web Server running.
