this locomotive needs to be running permanently. it's a national treasure and should be considered a national priority to keep this running down the rails. nothing else like it exists on the face of the earth.

I want say that that Ed Dickens and the whole up crew really did a good job on the up 4014. They really did that’s for sure I am really proud of them for what they accomplished. 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
And a monster locomotive comes roaring out of the blinding snow and then vanishes again with a rumble and a roar, just like it did when new. SUPER absolutely super, even pulling some real freight cars to boot. A perfect end to a wonderful year with X4014.
I love the scenes of Big Boy running in the cold during the falling snow and its own stream blowing bellowing, all make for spectacular photo shoots!!!
The great iron horse charging for the barn. I know they will probably never see it but I want to thank UP and especially head engineer and supervisor of steam Ed Dickens Jr. for the the long process of restoring our Big Boy and the great thrill this year. May she and 844 still be steaming for the next golden spike centennial. I'm sure the crew is worn out and I wish them a good rest and happy holidays. Just come to the NW next Summer. Don't forget were on the UP mainline too.
Ed has become the rock star of rail fans. His email inbox and USPS mailbags must be full to overflowing. You gotta believe he feels the love. A great team leader in the old fashioned sense. Glad they got home safe.
How could anyone scrap a Big Boy? Bring 'em all out, refurbish them, and run them in the snow like this. This is the extreme magic of the steam locomotive at work. This is railroading!
Wonderful professional photography. What a thrill to watch this big sixteen wheeler barreling along at top speed through the barren snow covered countryside.
Looks like something out of a dream! Beautiful steam locomotive moving through the snow at speed, pulling a combo consist. The old girl knows she is at the barn when she crosses eastbound under the BNSF mainline underpass at Cheyenne. Great videography. Thanks for posting.
I've paced 844 on this same stretch at 70 mph. At that speed the drivers are right on the edge of being a blur to the naked eye. You can't quite focus on them. Amazing to see the Big Boy out in the snow. Most of the steamers are put up for the winter and are seldom out in these conditions. Unusual and great camera work. Congratulations. You have brought a considerable amount of pleasure to over 60k people. That is no small achievement and is something to be proud of.
I really appreciate comments like yours. I'm glad you enjoyed the video! this comment reminded me of why I do youtube. My channel may be fairly small but it feels good to know that I am bringing enjoyment to people.
its incredible how easily she moves along for the size of her. looks like it could keep that speed up for many hours and has great endurance. what an incredible piece of 20th century engineering which today is still quite capable (but expensive to operate)
America at its finest. 100% American made by Americans watch and see what we did every day. I can never watch a steam locomotive without tearing up. This BigBoy is really something. Yhanks Union Pacific for putting her back on the rails.
Yea, but it all began with British technology, here in my home town of Stourbridge, UK. We sent your first ever locomotive to you in 1828. It was called The Stourbridge Lion. However, incredible advances were made, which resulted in this beauty, 116 years later.
.56-57-58 was the best. when I was boy in the40s, every night about 5PM a steam engine train would go thru our farm and blow the whistle all the way in case a cow got on the tracks.
Big boy UP 4014 put on an excellent performance while operating through a snow filled atmosphere, I always enjoy seeing steam locomotives operating in snowy weather. I am glad that the 4014 was restored back to operation as I would have never expected to witness the restoration of a UP "big boy" class locomotive during my lifetime and these scenes are fantastic to observe.
Big boy Union Pacific stream train hauling tail on the track very cold outside of Colorado headed Wyoming long trip awesome video friend bless you big horn get out of the way
@Bjorn Berkowitz Me too!!! Every time I see a Diesel behind a steam engine, I feel like it's being chaperoned, and isn't being allowed to do the job it's born to do. That said, the only time I've seen an unchaperoned Steam engine, it was UP's Challenger, and it was only pulling freight. No passenger cars. Someone said something recently about "steam heat explosion" or rupture, or something, and it's got me thinking that the Diesel is there to provide electric power for the passenger cars because they don't trust the Steamer to be able to provide heat/power safely. Honestly, if anyone could provide proper maintenance on the steam systems, it'd be UP, but I can still see where they're coming from...
Glad they are home. Awards of thanks for all the hard working crew that helped Big Boy make this incredible trip. Wish i had been able to see him come threw Missouri. Don't let him sit still now keep him moving. This country needs to see what we use to be able build and can still do it. Be Proud of What We The People can do by working together.
Wonderful to see the Big Boy 4014 returning to its home base in snowy conditions after six months of amazing trips through the US. I have followed everything since Pomona watching a plethora of great UA-cam videos. One of the absolute highlights for me was watching the 4014 double heading with the 844 through Echo Canyon of the Wasatch Mountains on a wet weather day. Looking forward to seeing many more great videos in the future. I can only imagine how magnificent it would look if both locomotives teamed up again for trips through Idaho and north along the Columbia River to Portland and Seattle etc. Bring it on please UP. BTW absolute hats off to Ed Dickens for his amazing efforts to bring this epic adventure to its fruition for the benefit of thousands of people. He is a perfect spokesman for UP. And of course to his great crew. Well done to all of you. Appreciations coming from me the UA-cam Train Lord in South Australia. Thanks again. WOW!
Train Lord.... The greatest embodiment of epic steam power (these days) would most certainly be a Triple Header with the 4014, 3985 (after its full rebuild), and the 844!!.... or go one better, and do a quadruple header.... adding either the N&W 611 (streamlined Northern) or the SP 4449. : )
Such an awesome locomotive. Hope they keep it going for years to come. I got to see when it was on static display at LA County Fairgrounds. So glad they restored it!
Hurryin' home for Thanksgiving! Welcome back guys, thank you for creating unforgettable memories for so many in 2019. And much gratitude to the RailGiants museum staff, who provided a home to 4014 for over a half century then graciously relinquished it for restoration.
Brilliant footage guys and thanks for sharing it on UA-cam. Massive thanks to Ed and his team, the Union Pacific & Cheyenne museum for making this amazing journey happen over the last few months with 4014. We’ve been catching up every day on UA-cam on the tour. Hope to fly over to travel behind 4014 next year from Manchester UK
What a journey. From Cheyenne to pamona. Then the south east and Texas. You've had heat cool the the snow and cold. My hat off to Ed and his crew and also to you for all the film you made on this journey. Happy holidays to the crew. And UP . Thanks for sharing such a great peace of history.
My 8 month-old son watched the whole video with me with a rapt expression. Thanks for putting this video out where we can enjoy it from all the way across the country. Some of the tracking shots, such as 2:46 and 6:20, are absolutely amazing - the combination of flying snow and steam makes such a great visual. I wish I was there to see it. (Although I'm glad I didn't have to drive in those weather conditions!)
(27 Nov, 2019, 4th Comment) My *Absolute* Favorite steam locomotive is *Certainly* the Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014. Thank you so much for capturing him in all its glory.
Nothing is more fun (at least in trains) than being a passenger during a blizzard. I was on one years ago on the train from New London, Connecticut to Washington, DC (back when it used to snow around the DC area). The train was packed with people who didn't want to make the drive and college students back after Christmas break. The train just kept going, plowed through the snow and made it DC, almost on time. The only thing it ran out of was beer.
Watching the action shots at around 3 mins reminds me that it is now time for the Challenger to arise and take her place. I, for one, will be pouncing on any scrap of news, as I did for 4014.
I would just love to be on this train as many of us would. It rolled through where I live and I was going to go down to the tracks and watch it. The snow delayed me and I missed it. Heard it though while digging out my ranch.
I dearly love how after many years of restoration, the old girl is no roundhouse queen. She is busy earning a living which is what she was built for back in 1944. I will be happy to see the Challenger #3985 back on the tracks as well.
Great video, thanks for sharing. Maybe you can do something about the wind noise for the next video if and when there is one on the 4014. Welcome home Ed and his crew. Thanks Union Pacific for this trip into the past. I've followed this whole journey around the southwest on UA-cam by viewing the many posters and even saw it in person at one of it's stops. Yes, that steam whistle is unmistakable and can be heard 5 miles away. Someone needs to compile a video of the reactions to it, especially the kids.
Charles Damery.... can't think of too many steam locomotives that I've ever seen (hundreds of them) that did not have "some" steam seepage somewhere / Any & Everywhere that wasn't visible, Especially when cold out. Some steam leakage, especially around the piston rod packing is pretty normal.
