  • On July 8th 2021, Union Pacific bigboy 4014 roared back to life after 2 years of resting for its 2021 test run. In this video watch the bigboy as it traverses the Union Pacific Greeley subdivision which is infamous for up steam test runs. We will see the train pass various locations along this subdivision on its way to Denver with engineer Ed Dickens at the throttle. This video was filmed by Sam Kunugi and Luke Miller of Colorado Railroad Productions.

    The trains in my dreams run on the pressure of the steam, Big Boy can pull one a mile long when the pressure is on, that right ole 4014 is the train whistle I hear in my dreams along his big wheels being driven on the power from the steam.

      Glad you enjoyed it. I really enjoy pacing shots as well because they are a lot of fun to take but I have cut back on taking them as much because it cuts back on the ability for others to pass and get ahead to take stationary photos so i have started to do it a bit less. that being said it never gets old pacing a steam locomotive and I plan to continue it.

      @@ColoradoRailroadProductions Hearing that makes me nervous, I hope they don’t do to 3985 what they’ve done to 838 over the years. I personally am still holding on to the hope that U.P. will realize that 3985 has to join the 4014 and 844 and ride the rails again.

    • @ColoradoRailroadProductions
      @ColoradoRailroadProductions  3 роки тому +1

      I agree. Personally I don't see a practical reason 3985 should run again but it would be cool as hell. I hope they cosmetically restore 3985 and donate it to the Evanston roundhouse as a display piece. I know 4014 already uses some of 3985s parts because the challenger and bigboy have so many interchangeable parts. I wish they would stop stealing parts off it. Although it would be really cool they hardly use 2 locomotives and it needs more work then the bigboy did so its just not practical.

    • @natejenkins8645
      @natejenkins8645 3 роки тому +3

      @@ColoradoRailroadProductions It would be nice if they put 3985 by the Cheyenne Depot again which is where it was the first time they put it on display. It would definitely be extremely expensive to maintain 844, 4014, and 3985 in working condition at the same time but just think of the Public Relations benefits that the Union Pacific could reap from that. The steam program has always been centered on public relations work and operating all three of there modern super powered steam engines (not necessarily for the same event or at the same time) would take U.P.’s public relations to levels that are unheard in my opinion. One imagination I like to have is Union Pacific returns 3985 to service and they doublehead it with 4014. Now just think about that for a second in terms of publicly for the U.P, on the one hand there hasn’t been a articulated doubleheader on the Union Pacific since 1959 or in the whole country since that same year or 1960. Then you add on the fact that 4014 and 3985 are two of the largest and most powerful locomotives ever built, add to that the huge fan base that the Union Pacific Steam Program has accumulated over 60 years, that’s the makings of pure gold for U.P.
      p.s. sorry about rambling on lol, I’m a HUGE Union Pacific steam locomotive fan.

      just a bit

      They may have adjusted it slightly, but still sounds a lot like it did in 2019 honestly (slightly raspy, but mostly clean and deep). It's interesting, because the 1950s recordings suggested it was much raspier than this. Maybe it was just the audio recording quality?

    • @ColoradoRailroadProductions

      it is possible it is just the mic quality the contacts in the mic are wearing out. but i have heard that it may be using 3985's whistle.

      @@likestallwomen I don’t get what you don’t understand. Just because you have seen it with 844 and 3985 dosnt mean that they were on the same trackage. It is a downhill all the way into Denver on the greely subdivision. Because of this the locomotive is being pushed by gravity instead of working with steam which is why the chuff dosnt happen

    love seeing the big boy out on the rails ,,but for god sake get a microphone that works ,every time the train whistled it sound disappeared in crackles ,,,oh by the way , did anyone else figure out that the DIESEL engine was doing all the work ,,was really clear at 9:00 in the video crossing the bridge there is no chugging or huffing all you hear is the clanking of the drive rods which are slack because it was being pushed and it's not producing any smoke

    • @ColoradoRailroadProductions
      @ColoradoRailroadProductions  3 роки тому

      Thanks for the suggestion about the audio but I find it ridiculous that you think I didn’t notice it. I have my microphone for 3 years and when I bought it it was top of the line. shooting of loud things such as the bigboy and trains is hard on the microphone contacts. In this video I realized that my mic was giving out so I bought a new one on July 9th. Also the reason you hear rod clank in that clip is because the crew was required to reduce speed for the bridge and the Lesalle yard going past it. I recommend that if you are going to complain about other people videos of the bigboy you go out and see it yourself

    why do they keep going slow. every big boy top speed is 80 mph (130 km/h). i have seen many videos now and they never do speed close to (80 mph)

    • @ColoradoRailroadProductions

      Because it is hard on the bigboy to run too fast just because it can do 80 dosn't mean it should do 80. Just be grateful there is a running bigboy.
